The crazy name brigade welcomes a new member

Tags: Births

1_56 Jonathan Davis of KoRn and his porn star wife Deven have welcomed their first son together, Pirate, on March 18th. Jonathan also has a son Nathan, 9, from his first marriage. Davis wrote on his website: "Just wanted to tell everyone my son was born on March 18 2005. He is so beautiful. I can’t describe how I’m feeling right now. Pirate is healthy and Deven is doing great. It’s a trip I was born Jan 18 and Nathan Oct 18 and now Pirate March 18"

Elizabeth sends us the link to KoRnWeb, which says that Pirate is actually just a nickname, since they will be keeping his actual name private. I hope that this is actually the case!

Thanks to Victoria and the KoRn message board.

call me crazy, but that actually got a really nice ring to it. baby pirate :D

  2. stacey Says:

well it is a differnt name.. like i said before must be some kind of contest going on in hollywood to see who can come up with the most unusual name. congrats to them both.

  3. Ella Says:

OK!! What is up with the stupid names?? Don’t these people relize these kids have to grow up being called the weird names??

  4. Lauren Says:

Oh geez….here we go again with stupid baby names. I didn’t think it could get any worse than “God’iss” or whatever the other one was.

  5. Marrit Says:

Congratulations to them and ehm… interesting name.

  6. Sarcastic Journalist Says:

…They hope to soon have another son, Lumberjack.

  7. Ashley Says:

It’s not as bad as Pilot Inspektor…Congrats to them!

  8. Jennifer Says:

Or naming their baby an object or store (Banjo and Grocery). I’m just wondering, how did they go from Nathan to Pirate? They’re so different! Anyways, Congrats!

  9. Carolyn Says:

Can you imagine how many puffy shirts this kid is going to get over the course of his lifetime?????

  10. SSssssssss Says:

well you know Audio Science still wins hands down
Psst I’d love to see a pic of this kid: Shannyn Sossamon’s son

  11. sarah Says:

how is that kid going to interview for a job one day? the member of korn probably named his kid pirate for publicity!!

  12. Jennifer Says:

I think little Nathan is lucky his mom had some common sense. Poor little Pirate. Congrats to them on the birth of a healthy baby but I have to say I am tired of all of these crazy Hollywood names. They seem like they are only for shock value. I mean Pirate is a good name for a puppy but why would you give that name to a person?

  13. Amanda Says:

I truely do not understand why people get so upset and irritated with celebrities naming their children what they want. JUST BECAUSE THE NAME IS NOT FAMILIAR TO YOU DOES NOT MAKE IT A BAD NAME!! besides even with pilot inspektor and audio science – its not like people are going to call them by their full name all the time. They will be called Pilot and Audio. Im sure that names like Jessica and Amanda sounded wierd to some people at some period in time also, just get over it.

  14. me Says:

easy for you to say Amanda…you have a “normal” name!

  15. Erica Says:

Oddly, while I think Pilot Inspektor and Audio Science are HORRIFIC, I really like Pirate. It’s got an edge to it. In the broadest sense, it’s no different from naming a baby Hunter or Parker. Hopefully they gave the baby a relatively normal middle name, so if he chooses he can go by that when he gets older, and Pirate can be a neat name his close friends and family call him. :) Baby Pirate, how cute!

  17. havana Says:

    Yeah but guys –

Pirate is their first child together so Deven didnt name Nathan – PLUS it is Jonathans DAUGHTER who is named Nathan!

Hey – a member of Korn is hardly gonna name his son Edward now is he folks? : )

  18. Ally Says:

Havana – Nathan Houseman Davis is Jonathan’s son, not daughter. He doesn’t have a daughter. All the other kids of Korn have normal names – Nathan, Serena, Olivia, David, Sophia, Natalie, Jeanne and Carmella. Pirate is the only weird one.

  19. Anne Says:

It seems like these parents are not really thinking this naming thing through very carefully. I’m all for creativity but I think it’s going to be really limiting growing up with a name like “Pirate”. Can you imagine a CEO of a company named Pirate or a young man interviewing for a job being taken seriously. Let’s face it, people do make judgements on others based on their name.

I think the middle name is a great place to put something like this!

And how many times is this kid going to hear the phrase, “Argh, Shiver me timbers!”. Poor little guy.

  20. sara j Says:

Seriously, what’s wrong with Pirate? There are certain names out there that are just stupid sounding but Pirate isn’t really one of them.

If people can be called Hunter, Parker, Walker, Baker or Prince, why can’t they be called Pirate? It’s no different.

  21. meghan Says:

okay – i found this website – “weird names of music performers’ children. thought it was funny.

    http://www.amiright.com/names/siblings/index.shtml

  22. sarah Says:

i think it is child abuse to have a name like pirate, pilot, grocery, or audio

  23. stephanie Says:

Anne, i hardly think these rock stars kids are going to be accountants :D

Jennifer, if you’re referring to Rachel Griffith’s son Banjo, he was named after a very famous Australian poet :)

  24. Ally Says:

Yeah, but Hunter, Parker, Walker, etc. were all last names first so it really isn’t that weird. Pirate, Pilot and Audio aren’t. I’m shocked at all the people saying that they like Pirate, that it’s cute. I guess it will be easier to explain to little Pirate why they chose to give him this name, than to tell him about Daddy directing Mommy in a porno that will be coming out later this year. No joke.

  25. Sabrina Says:

Carmella and Serena, aren’t normal. I actually like Pirate, (i love pirates).

  26. Ally Says:

Are you kidding? Carmella and Serena ARE normal. Go to any baby names website or book and you will find them. You won’t find Pirate. Just because you love pirates, does not mean you should name your kid Pirate. Aye Aye Matey!!!!!

  27. jj Says:

Just out of curiousity, who named their kid Grocery? That’s insane.

  28. jessica Says:

my sons name is Theoden, so I really can’t make fun of the different names.I’m hoping our babe won’t be too mad at us, when he grows up. We just loved the sound of it. Pirate really isn’t that bad. it actually had a nice ring to it, I think it’s better than choosing a name that everyone else is using. But yes some names are just bad.

  29. jessica Says:

  30. Ally Says:

I’d rather have a name that everyone else has than to be named Pilot or Jermajesty, but that’s just me. Everyone’s entitled to their own opinion. I think Pirate is awful but it’s certainly going to get him a lot more press than if he had named the baby Matthew or Jack. Maybe that’s the point. I wonder what they would have named the baby if it was a girl.

  31. katie Says:

jessica, are you a lord of the rings fan? or is that just a coincidence???

  32. jessica Says:

My husband who has seen the films picked it when I was pregnant. He informed me of the connection after my heart was set on the name. I haven’t seen the movies. Only a handful of people have asked me about the tolkien connection. It is also a very old English name . I figure if he really hates it he can go by Theo or Oden, his middle name is Thomas. I had to be a little safe. WE also have a Julia and Noah, we are not totally weird.

  33. April Says:

I think the name Pirate is cute. The kid isn’t going to need to go to some CEO and ask for a real office job. The only job this boy will have will more than likely be a “Hollywood kid” type job. And it’s not like it matters, because the kid’s going to be loaded because of his parents. Anyways, it’s not like he can’t be called something else if he decides to do something else with his life. He could always be asked to be called “Michael” or “Jeff.” Ya never know….

  34. Jennifer Says:

Jessica-I like your sons name. Although, I have seen the “Rings” movies so I wouldn’t have chosen it (I would immediately make the connection everytime I thought of it). And you’re right, if he hates it he can be called Theo or something like that.

Stephanie-yes, I realize that Banjo’s name comes from an Australian poet, but come on, how many of us Yanks are going to think of anything but an instrument when we hear the name? ‘Cause it wasn’t me at first!

I forgot about Jermajesty! That’s just terrible! Talk about being teased!

  35. Rachel Says:

Personally, I think Pirate IS a cute name but then again I am one of those who falls for the “unusual” names like Phinneaus, Apple, Telemachus, and Colony. Names such as these give kids a great sense of uniqueness. Kids born into families such as these aren’t ment to stay in the shadows anyway so its just a better way for them tto be remembered.

  36. sy Says:

Call me crazy, but the name Pirate is going to be last of his worries. His mother is a PORN STAR for crying out loud. I just hope they have a trust fund especially for therapy sessions during adolescence and early adulthood. ( I am not saying porn stars should not have kids at all, so don’t jump on me. But it’s not easy for their kids I imagine.)

  37. Lauren Says:

LOL@”His mother is a PORN STAR for crying out loud”!!!
Honestly, I think Pirate is a cool name. It sounds nice and conjures up an image of strength, adventure, & machismo. I don’t think it’s any worse than Christie Brinkley naming her 3rd Sailor.

  39. Sarah, CBB Editor Says:

Whomever asked, no one named their kid Grocery. Country singer Deana Carter joked that she would name her son that because of all the crazy baby names that have been coming out, but she actually named him Gray.

  40. Elizabeth Says:

Pirate is just a nickname…the website says underneath the story that is not the baby’s real name. The couple has said they will not reveal it.

  41. Sarah, CBB Editor Says:

Can you link me to that please? MTV, PageSix, and Jonathan himself say Pirate. I would love it to not be true. :D

  42. abbey Says:

i think it’s humorous that this discussion is going on because, whether anyone in the universe likes their kid’s name, they really don’t care. it seems as though “celebrities” name their children odd names because we are focusing on a relatively small and select group of individuals. more often than not, a celebrity child will have a “normal” name if you look at the overall trends, and remember that 20-25 years ago names like Ashley, Madison, and Cooper were rare and “weird”. it’s just that we tend to focus on the odd names and make the assumption that “every celebrity names their children odd names” when, in fact, they don’t. there are just as many children with odd names born from non-celebrites as there are to celebrities.

i like the name Pirate, though not that it really matters.

  43. magda Says:

One thing I dislike is giving names that rhyme..Like Zowie Bowie. My religion teacher was named Jackie Mackie. That is just wrong. I like unusual names..but like Pilot Inspekor and other ones…they are just weird. They don’t realize what kind of childhood these kids are going to have. Pirate is kinda cool. What would be cooler if it was just a nickname :)

  44. sara Says:

ARE WE FORGETTING THAT HIS MOM IS A PORN STAR ENOUGH SAID.

  45. Anonymous Says:

Magda – Zowie’s real first name is Duncan and that’s what he goes by. Is it possible that your religion teacher (a woman) married a man with the last name Mackie? I’ve seen someone named Shelly marry a guy with the last name Shelley. And Paige Davis from Trading Spaces married a guy with the last name Page (though her real first name is Mindy).
I hope Pirate is just a nickname…it’s kind of a rough one for a teen to live with.

  46. Kristen Says:

LOL!! Sorry, this is kind of a cheesy line, but here it goes: “Let’s hope little Pirate doesn’t grow up and pirate daddy’s music to his friends!”

Funny connection, but I highly doubt Korn is in agreeance with pirating music!

Hey, maybe he was just joking about the name? And if he wasn’t, well, whatever, who cares? It’s cute in a way! ;)

Oh, one more thing, I love how Apple friend’s can one day say “Apple Martin-i”! My favorite drink! K, I’m done now!

  47. saba Says:

Generally people should be able to call their kids what they like, but think about what a Pirate actually does, hijacking boats, murdering sailors, stealing possessions…

  48. Erica Says:

True. But I have a feeling that with our generation’s continued glorification of Pirates (Jack Sparrow anyone?) that the potential taboo of the name will not really matter. And after all, tons of people choose to be pirates on Halloween. Little Pirate can be one everyday. :)

  49. sara j Says:

No one complains that people call their children Angel. That’s no different either.
Plus if it’s just a nickname, then I dunno what you’re all moaning about.

And you don’t have to be famous to want an unusual name for your kid. I want to call one of my kids, Muse.

  50. Luck Says:

He says Pirate as if it IS the name because he wants the name kept private. Enough said. Besides as a nick name, it’s super cute.

  51. Sabrina Says:

I like the name Rainbow for a girl, (i have meaning why i like it, and I WOULD use it) At least they are creative and not like everyone else, Serena, and Carmella aren’t normal, they are unusual, Jane or Tom are “normal”. Children tease kids for anything not just names, so it doest matter, maybe it’s just me but i rather be unique (my name is Sabrina), than be like everyone else. Pirate isn’t that bad, someone names thier kid God’iss now that’s worse.

  52. Jen Says:

Rainbow would be cute, my friend has a thing for rainbows (special meaning behind it) and has always said she wanted her daughter (if/when she has one) to have Rainbow somewhere in her name. I almost thought you were her until I looked at your name! Anyways, for all we know that could be the story behind baby Pirate’s name. We don’t really know. I don’t know if I would choose something that strange, but to each their own I suppose. Also, I’m kinda with some of the other people on this site…his mother is a porn star. Sometime in his childhood, he’s gonna have to deal with that. Much, much worse than just having a bad name.

  53. Jennifer Says:

Maybe someone will name his/her kid “Pornstar” next… speaking of which, I always giggle whenever someone is named B.J…so, there you go.

What would suck is to be named something rather ordinary and then have someone with that same name do something infamous (allegedly or not) a la Scott Peterson or Robert Blake!

  54. sara j Says:

Jennifer, i know what you mean about being named something ordinary and have someone with that name do something infamous perhaps.

I remember, when I was doing my art coursework at the end of highschool, i had to interview some professional artist who did art in relation to the topic I was writing about. I tracked down and interviewed this man…thing was his name was Michael Jackson. But I don’t think anyone could hear that name without thinking of the singer.

  55. Stephanie Says:

In a strange way I kind of like pirate! lol

  56. Judy B Says:

Children can be mean. These children with weird names will be taunted and made fun of by their school mates. I think some people probably like the name “Pirate” because they like the movie Pirates of the Caribbean so they think it is a cool name. To me it is very shortsighted to give you child an indentity that will mocked his entire life. There are celebrities from days gone by who have given their children weird names and the children change their names as soon as they are old enough because they are sick of being made fun of.

  57. Jean Says:

Remember, it is only a NICKNAME. By the time he gets to school, he may (or may not) want to only be called by his real name and not Pirate.

  58. Jennifer Says:

Come on everyone…kids (and adults for that matter) can turn ANY name into something to be mocked, be it unusual or not…if your name is Max, you will get “Maxi Pad” at some point in your life, I’m sure…if your name rhymes with something, you’ll get all the variations of that…my mom’s name is Gail and she said people would call her “Gail the Whale” (even though she never had a weight problem)…I don’t think it matters if the name is common or unique…actually, sometimes the kid with the “different” name is regarded as being cool…I think it could be an advantage actually sometimes…I remember knowing someone with the name “Dallas” and I always kind of thought of him as being creative (whether that was true or not!). It CAN be an advantage to have a cutting-edge name, regardless of how unusual…it will give kids a chance to interact with you more “hey, how’d you get that name!?” and maybe they will make MORE friends than if they had been named something ordinary. When I was little, there were 3 Jennifers in my class…and I was always “Jennifer M.” and I hated it. I remember wanting to have my parents call me Monica at one point! (no idea why! I just liked that name!)

  59. Erin Walker Says:

I know, what’s with the famous folks giving their kiddos such crazy names? Is’nt it too hard to name them somthing simple like Mary or Alexander?Oh,well-It could be a lot worse,Jermaine Jackson has a son name Jermajesty, but I belive a more fitting monkier would be Jerfamilyisnutso.

  60. justme Says:

Ah, I don’t know where any of y’all grew up, but I grew up in a neighborhood made up of nearly equal parts starving artist/hippies and black people, and the names of many friends made Pirate sound “normal”. Those kids grew up to be everything from performers to garbage collectors to accountants, and none that I’m aware of suffered to the point that they had to change their names or anything. Point being, it depends on the kind of community you live in, and if you reside in, say, a small town in the American midwest, your opinion on the acceptability of a name like Pirate in Los Angeles may be rather inconsequential. I’m not crazy about Pirate, personally, but I do prefer unique/original names in general. Good on ‘em!
