Getty Images licenses first Shiloh photos
Update: Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like CBB will be able to show the pictures. In a separate statement released this afternoon, it was revealed that the photos, which are believed to be of the entire family, will only be allowed to be printed once by the winning bidder, and will not be allowed to be used in online publications. The highest bidder will need to be approved by Angelina and Brad and will sign a contract agreeing to the rules set forth. The photos are expected to raise more than $6.65 million dollars, and UNICEF is believed to be the charity the money will be donated to. Brad and Angelina will be holding a press conference in Namibia on Wednesday, presumably to announce the winning bidder (likely to be People or Ok Magazine) and discuss the charity they’ve chosen to receive the money.
Originally posted at 1 pm: It was announced today that Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have brokered a deal with photo agency Getty Images to distribute the first photos of their daughter Shiloh Nouvel to the press. The photos will be available to all media outlets willing to pay, and Getty will see no profits from the sales. Instead, all money will go towards newborn infants in developing countries, with the name of the specific charity announced at a later date.
In a statement, Angelina and Brad said, "While we celebrate the joy of the birth of our daughter, we recognize that two million babies born every year in the developing world die on the first day of their lives. These children can be saved, but only if governments around the world make it a priority." Jonathan Klein, CEO of Getty, revealed that, "We are honored that the Jolie-Pitt family has recognized our long-term commitment to these critical issues as well as our ability to use the power of imagery to make a difference in the lives of many."
We are unsure of when the photos will be released at this time, although we are told the photos will make it into this week’s magazines. The set offered for sale is a series of six photos, which Getty describes as, "Beautiful – very intimate, casual and not Hollywood glitz."

FANTASTIC!!! We were all hoping the money would be donated. Think of how many babies will get a chance at life, beyond that first day!!!

Maybe it’s just me but I’m a little skeptical about how much money is actually going to reach the children. Unfortunately, most developing nations have problems with corruption, even with it being monitered money still lines the pockets of officials’ trousers.

Can’t wait to see the pictures ! I love this family, they are just great together.

I’m not at all surprised – I would not expect anything less from them! =)
And I cannot wait to see the photos!! =) =)

I think that is a wonderful idea! It’s a shame so many babies die..
June 5th, 2006 at 3:50 pm
Good for them. I wish more celebrities would do the same.

Do they honestly expect online places to not post the photos? Once it’s in People I can’t see them expecting people not to scan the magazine. LOL I took it to mean they wouldn’t accept bids from online publications like Corbis, etc

Wow! It’s amazing that the birth of one baby, Shiloh, could end up saving the lives of many hundreds or thousands more. A lot can be done with that amount of money. I think it’s terrific that Brad and Angie, especially given how private they are, are willing to do this. My respect for them just went up tremendously!

What a great choice. I knew Brad & Angie would do something like this. I think we’ll see more of this with big celebrity births– didn’t Julia Roberts do a similar thing with pictures of her twins? I know Shiloh will be as beautiful as their other 2 kids.
Why can’t online sites post the scans?
June 5th, 2006 at 7:38 pm
Because they are only allowing one publication to publish the photo one time. If online publications publish scans, they are breaking that rule. I imagine, since Angelina already snapped up every possible Shiloh related domain name, they will be watching blogs and be suing or sending cease and desist notices to anyone who publishes them. We’ll have to wait until Wednesday to get details, I guess. Maybe they’ll say something at the press conference.
I agree Lola – I think a lot of celebrities will continue to go down this path as well. Julia Roberts had her husband take pics and donated the money, Courteney Cox Arquette donated money from the sale of Coco’s first photo…

Thanks for explaining that, Sarah =) Such a shame they would do that though. Oh well – I’ll try to get my hands on a copy of whichever magazine gets the rights =)
As far as other celebs following suit… I’m surprised more haven’t done it! I always found it tasteless when some celebs sell their kids pics and run with the money but greatly admire those who take the money and give it to charities. =)

we should probably still be able to access them online on getty images’ site. we probably won’t be able to purchase them, save them, etc.
June 5th, 2006 at 10:20 pm
It’s great that they’re going to donate the proceeds from the photos to the charity. I like when people do that, especially when they have full ability to do so.
I’m sure everyone who wants to see the photos of Shiloh, will see them somehow. If Getty has them, then I don’t see why you can’t view them. I just want to see what the little girl looks like.
June 5th, 2006 at 10:47 pm
Unfornuantly the pics are on a section of Getty Images that can only be accessed by publishers etc. They won’t be on the general editorial pages like other pics.
As for the other blogs publishing the scans, really they can sue all they want, once the phtotos are out people will save them and use them. The pics can be passed around by email etc. I don’t see what they can do about it, once they are in the public domain anybody can have them.
June 6th, 2006 at 12:32 am
Definitely – if the scans are on another blog, we would have no problem linking to them unless we are requested not to. I was just hoping we’d be able to host our own scans as we’ve done in the past, but I’m not going to put us in line to be sued.
SOMEPLACE will have them. Just probably not us, unfortunately.

Sarah – they apparently went to PEOPLE for $4.1M.
