Brooke Shields’ back to work!
Now that daughter Grier Henchy is a few months old, Brooke Shields is out bringing home the proverbial bacon. She is currently appearing as plastic surgeon Christian Troy’s therapist on Nip/Tuck and played a supermodel-whose-husband-cheated-on-her-with-an-18-year-old-girl type character on a recent episode of Law & Order: Criminal Intent.
And now you may have seen her new Colgate Total commercial in heavy rotation. In it, Brooke either plays herself or an actress-mom-to-two-girls type who says that a healthy mouth and smile is important to her as an actress and as a mom. It took a viewing or two of the commercial before I realized that the kids in the commercial are not Rowan and Grier!
I understand that she wouldn’t want to expose her girls like that, but I also thought it was kind of strange in that it appears she was supposed to be playing herself. It reminded me of the Bright Beginnings ad that Elisabeth Hasselbeck appeared in, where she too played herself but the "daughter" she nuzzled with was not her baby, Grace. What do you think?

Reminds me of the commercial that Wayne Brady did with his black wife. His real wife is not black!
It cracked me up

There are lots of different ways that celebrity images of their “real” selves are shown to the public – I remember that Wayne Brady commercial too, and Howie Mandel had a ‘reality show’ where he played himself, I believe his real son played his son, but his wife was portrayed by an actress. Also, there are commercials that involve the real kids of celebrities but aren’t realistic in other ways – remember the Chrysler ads Celine Dion did with her son – I’m pretty sure she doesn’t drive a Chrysler minivan in real life!! Kelly Ripa is in commercials for Tide where we see her driving through a drive through (which she may or may not do in real life) without any kids – same thing – we suspend our disbelief because it’s tv. So reality is skewed no matter how you look at it – I applaud Brooke for keeping her kids out of the ad.

I think it is weird they do not appear with their own children. These are not children that have been shielded from the press. We have seen pictures of all of them. Brooke seems to be playing herself so why not include her children in the commercial or why not do a commercial without children all together.

Speaking of Brooke, I saw Brooke with Rowan and Grier on tv guide magazine this week. Rowan is so beautiful, she is looking more and more like Brooke. And Grier looks exactly like Rowan. I saw it in the supermarket, if I had it home I would scan it so everyone could see. Maybe someone else will scan the photo, it’s adorable.

I thought that it was on the strange side when I first saw the commercials. I was like, “Cute, but wait a minute! Those aren’t her real kids!”
I know it’s a commercial and not print, but I don’t see how she can do magazine spreads and magazines featuring them, but not a commercial. I know not everyone always buys magazines, so she sort of has a window with that, but I’m sure people still see the photos and read about her family. Maybe she’s willing to show them to an extent. Makes no sense to me at all, but maybe it does to her?

I don’t find it weird.
Even when the kids have been photographed before in public, they do not ask to participate in a commercial and sell their faces to a product.
I would agree, however, that perhaps the commercial should’ve had Brooke in it alone.

when I saw the commercial my first thought was, “that doesn’t look like Rowan!” but out of all celebs I’d think that she’d be one that would be willing to have her kids in a commercial with her. Nonetheless they are certainly entitled to use other children to protect Grier and Rowan. But yeah it’s a bit tacky to use someone else’s kids esp. when alot of people are aware of what yours look life from all the publicity shots of them!!
