How Britney lost her baby weight

Update:
Us Weekly’s source for Britney’s weightloss is not Britney herself, but a "source close to Britney."  Given how questionable this described weightloss plan is, we think the source is a big fibber.  Britney has obviously taken off some weight, as her face and legs look thinner.  Whether she’s done it with rigorous exercise or exclusive breastfeeding or surgery remains to be seen.

We at CBB stand firm in our belief that the last thing a brand new mom should be concerned about is weightloss.  This is the time to take care of your baby and yourself.  The weight will come off later.  Even celebrities whose job it is to look good should keep this in mind.  Your baby will only be a baby once.

Originally posted October 18, 2006:
Britney Spears
emerged on October 9th,  less than a month after giving birth to her second son, Sutton Pierce (or Jayden Jameson September 12th. She’s managed to drop twenty-six of the forty pounds of pregnancy weight and is now down to a size 8.

How did she do it?  According to Us Weekly’s Dina Sansing, Britney has lost the weight without the help of a personal trainer or nutritionist.  Her postpartum weight loss regimen has included:

  • running on the treadmill every morning for an hour
  • lifting weights every evening for 45 minutes
  • eating six small balanced meals throughout the day instead of the traditional 3 , which keeps her blood sugar stable
  • replacing white flour with high fiber whole grains
  • playing fast music during her workouts
  • and breastfeeding which can burn 500 hundred calories a day (though we heard she was not breastfeeding)

We are worried about the message that this sends to new moms, that it’ssafe to exercise like this following a birth and that this kind ofweight loss in a short period of time is normal.  It’s important to keep in mind that a decent amount of the weight was the baby himself, the placenta and water loss- possibly 12 pounds.  We don’t know if Britney did this, but we’ve heard of celebs having a tummy tuck and liposuction while they are in for their c-section.  In any case, we hope that Britney is under the care of a doctor because rapid weight loss is not typically considered healthy, nor is intense workouts before 6 weeks postpartum, especially after a c-section birth which is major abdominal surgery.  Safe weightloss is usually no more than 2 pounds a week.  This kind of postpartum weightloss is extremely unusual and probably not that safe.

We asked About.com’s Pregnancy/Birth Guide Robin Elise Weiss, LCCE, about this supposed weight loss plan.  Here’s what she said:

Exercise postpartum, particularly after a surgical birth, to this degree is a very bad idea.  Britney’s body would still be healing from the surgery and recovering from the hormones of pregnancy. Anyone who has ever experienced postpartum knows that the unstable feel of even walking across the floor in the early days would make running nearly impossible, particularly at this level. Most post-cesarean moms talk about the abdominal pain that comes with any exertion, not to mention that postpartum staple removal may not happen right away, if she had staples.  The general rule of lifting after a cesarean is nothing heavier than the baby for several weeks.

Some of the listed ideas are actually helpful and possible, even early postpartum, like smaller, more frequent meals, replacing white flour and breastfeeding. These would be healthy recommendations for most moms.

It is also important to note that a weight loss of 26 out of 40 pounds is not that dramatic at this juncture, it’s the slimming effect that Britney appears to have accomplished. Though plastic surgery during or immediately following a cesarean is generally not done because of the added surgery and the fact that the results are not the ones often desired, again because of the hormonal state of the postpartum body.

Britney’s second son is rumored to make his debut in an upcoming issue of People magazine.

  1. Tuesday Says:

I wish I had a nutritionist, chef, personal trainer to help me!

  2. M Says:

I don’t “buy” it… I still believe she had a tummy tuck– there is no way that she would be able to do all that exercising only 4-weeks after having had a c-section…

  3. katie Says:

I lost 30 lbs in 2 weeks after having my first child…BUT I was told not to exercise for at least 6 weeks after giving birth vaginally because it could hinder the healing process. So I think it is a bad idea that US Weekly is saying that she has been dieting and exercising right after having a c-section. Women need to be able to heal after what is really major abdominal surgery. And they need to feel good about the fact that they have time to heal and to not have it shoved in their face that some celeb is practically starving themselves to get back to their regular size. Plus I don’t think she is breastfeeding. When my daughter was 8 months old I was told I could go on a diet (2000 cals a day and 1 hr walk a day) and my milk basically went to nothing because of it. SO no I do not think she is breastfeeding her second. I know with her first she only breastfeed for a little over a month. That is just my point of view.

  4. Christine Says:

Even if she did NOT have a c-section, which she DID…she should not be on a weight loss/excersise program until at least 6 weeks post partum. I believe it is recommended to wait 8 weeks after a section.

  5. laura Says:

Ummm….she had a c-section! How in the world is she doing all that? I heard she had a tummy tuck and lipo. And I also heard she was not bfing. I mean, how do stories like that make REAL Moms feel? Please…

  6. M Says:

She looks so amazing. Good for her. I might have to take her tips and see if it works for me. :) I love her hair soooooo much.

  7. tink1217 Says:

i don’t think she is doing all that either!! After having a csection the minimum time to wait before exercising (especially abdominal) is 6 weeks and it is different for every woman. If she had a tummy tuck on top of a csection I would think she would need to wait before starting a vigorous routine. And, who in their right mind would run on a treadmill with breasts engorged with milk?? OUCH!! I did not breastfeed, but with my 2nd child I had to let the milk “dry up” naturally (they were no longer giving out medication to help dry them up) and BOY did it hurt!!!! Just walking down stairs was uncomfortable and forget about a hot shower!! So, running on a treadmill has to be uncomfortable too! All in all, I think she does look really great so far. Can’t wait to see the new baby!

  8. Angela Says:

She definitely had a tummy tuck. Like people have said, you are not meant to exercise so soon after having a C-section. She only had the baby 5 weeks ago!!! Tummy tuck!

  9. Kelli Says:

A month after my daughter was born I looked great too, a lot of the time you just have to know how to dress…wear flattering stuff! Some docs will actually let you walk or run after and if she is just lifting weights and doing it correctly then she may be allowed to do that too. I also had a c-section and after a month I felt great and my doc released me to be able to do a lot of other stuff because everything was healing okay.
I do not think that she had a tummy tuck; mainly because the majority of docs will not perform the procedure because there is no accurate way to judge how the uterus is going to heal and having the tummy tuck can impede that. Docs advise waiting until the uterus is done going down before doing anything like plastic surgery…plus I doubt she would because the scar from a tummy tuck is MUCH worse then a c-section scar.
I feel bad for Britney, she looks awesome but people are still putting her down. If she still looked post partum people would be calling her fat, the girl cannot win! I think she looks great and good for her!

  10. ingrid Says:

honestly I believe it’s normal to lose some of the baby weight pretty fast after the end of the pregnancy… I lost like 20 pounds in the couple of days after my son’s birth (still I did NOT look like Britney *sigh*)… BUT I don’t believe that she lost just 26 pounds, I mean, she looked pretty big in her pregnancy, and I can’t belive that *just* 26 pounds make such a difference! anyway, I also do believe that there was plastic surgery involved in this c-section…and I think that’s perfectly fine! I only hope that she knows where her limits are, because a c-section is a huge thing…

  11. B Says:

I don’t think Britney had a tummy tuck.
And she looks smaller than a size 8 to me?

  12. katie Says:

I should add that the 30lbs I lost where baby/placenta/water weight. I am still 9lbs away from what I was 13 months after giving birth. I didn’t start exercising until 7 weeks PP because when I started to exercise some at 5 weeks I started bleeding heavily again, that was scary. And even then I noticed a drop in my milk so I let up on the exercising a little. Because of that I gained a little of the 30 back (10lbs). I only gained 40 lbs with my daughter.

  13. Amber Says:

I’m finding this really hard to believe! I have had two c-sections and I know my Drs. said to lift nothing heavier than the baby for 8 weeks, try to avoid stairs, and even no driving for two weeks.

My first c-section healed nicely because I just sat and looked at my daughter all day – but it still took the 6 – 8 weeks to recover.

My second however took A LOT longer to heal because I had a toddler to care for also. There is NO way I would have been on the treadmill so soon after a c-section. You can so easily break apart your stitches! So I find all this workout talk, especially the running on the treadmill!!! a lot of TALK!

But she does look great whatever she did, but I do agree with the other post it is a shame US is “promoting” her weightloss this way. It can be very dangerous for a lot of ladies out there!

  14. melanie Says:

I don’t believe a word of this. She obviously breastfeeding, her breasts are (ahem) large. She did lose the weight rather quickly, but she didn’t gain very much, in my opinion. And she looks very healthy and happy. For a person who hasn’t even released the name or gender of her new baby and who hasn’t been seen in a month, people certainly seem to have a lot of info on her diet. If they know all that, they must know the real name of the baby. No? I didn’t think so.

  15. brandy Says:

I really dont think she just lost 26 lbs I mean no way to is way to skinny for just losing 26. I think she looks like she lost all the baby weight she had gainded and then a few more.

  16. Nik Says:

There is no way she could run an hour on the treadmill 4 weeks postpartum…I couldn’t start running until 8 weeks after both my children and I didn’t have a c-section. That story is made up!

  17. Josie K Says:

Does anyone remember how many days she was in the hospital after her C-Section? I’ve had 2 and both were only 3 days, 1 of the days was the day I had the baby. Wasn’t she in the hospital longer than a few days? Also, I was told not to excercise other than light walking for at least 6 weeks after my C-Sections. It’s all suspicious and quite honestly, if I had that kind of money and time, I would have had a tummy tuck, breast lift, lipo, and anything else to make my body look like it used to before kids…and I believe a lot of women would agree with me.

  18. Brooke Says:

I gained 39lbs (oops) while pregnant with my son. By 8 days postpartum, I had lost 30lbs, the other 9 slowly trailed off and were gone by the three month mark. I know a lot of it was water weight, and he was an average sized baby (7lbs). I am now 6mths PP and 3lbs below pre-pg weight, still BFing and not exercising (I know I’m bad). Aside from the c-section, if Britney is breastfeeding, she shouldn’t be exercising yet anyway because it will probably affect her supply.
Anyway, my point is that some women just lose the pregnancy weight immediately. I’m certainly no Britney and a size 10 to boot!

  19. meliciousgirl Says:

Don’t forget about support underwear. I know Britney is not a fan of bras but perhaps she’s got some tummy control underwear on? I wore some after my Caesar (about 6 weeks post-partum onwards) as even though I lost a lot weight quite quickly my tummy muscles were still very loose (and still are!)

  20. Amy Says:

I don’t really care how she lost the weight. What concerns me is the way the media is glorifying her for having a thin body only 4.5 weeks postpartum. How is that supposed to make us “real” moms feel? Hollywood places such an emphasis on losing a ton of weight super fast after having a baby, and that is just not realistic for most of us. It makes me sad that this is the standard that we are supposed to live up to. I really admire Mariska Hargitay for being proud of her body and not crash dieting to become super skinny overnight. We need more Hollywood moms like her!

  21. leis Says:

britney didnt gain so much with her second pregnancy that’s why she’s back to a normal size and in a couple of months she would definitely be back to her old figure, no doubt about it! Her body was very toned before she had babies especially her abs, so it’s no wonder she’s sporting a flat tummy in no time.. Give her the credit, she deserves it!

  22. Brooke D Says:

I’ve had 2 babies. One vaginally and my last one in june was a c-section. At my 2 week post-partum check-up for my section my doctor cleared me for anything I wanted to do, including driving, sex, exercise, even vigorous exercises. My doc said that different docs do different closures. My doc does a “plastic closure” which means every layer is stitched and it’s pretty much a tummy tuck w/o removal of skin. Most docs do a standard closure in which only the major layers are closed, therefore you have to wait longer to start doing things, b/c things aren’t as tightly stitched together as a plastic closure. And did anyone ever consider that she may be wearing a girdle or something. They are highly recommended for women that have had c-sections. Hope this helped with some info.

  23. apples and oranges Says:

I started running three days after I gave birth. My Doctor told me it was fine. He also said it depends on the person. People really need to stop comparing themselves to others. And worry about themselves.

  24. momof2girlies Says:

Good for her for looking so great so soon after the birth of her second child! (however it was done) I agree, the story has to be fabricated! I had a c-section with my second child and was told not to dare lift my 2 1/2 year old for atleast 2 weeks, longer if possible. So the running on the treadmill…please! But like I said, she looks great, and if I had the money (and courage) I would do a tummy tuck or lipo and look great too! Unfortunatly, I’m a big chicken and 2 yrs PP still have a few pounds to lose :(

  25. Babi Says:

I agree with Melanie and Kelli. And I think glossies are just using this one picture to market new diets/exercise methods. I am not a normally fit person, nor a regular exerciser, I did not bfeed (I had no milk to speak of) but I lost ALL pregnancy weight in 5 days, and it was A LOT of weight. I also doubt ANYBODY would undergo plastic surgery within a month of a c-section. Some women are luckier than others (a girl who gave birth the same day as myself has a FLAT stomach 2 weeks after birth!). That being said, Britney’s outfit seems quite flattering to me, clever enough to show off her legs without giving much away in the tummy area.

  26. benedicta Says:

i’m very happy for britney she looks pretty good, but she must be prudent because losing weight quickly is dangerous, but afterall she looks very great.well done britney!

  27. Missy Says:

Not to beat a dead horse, here, but there’s just NO way someone who had a C-section is jogging on a treadmill for an hour a day a few weeks after surgery. Any doctor who would okay that kind of exercise regimen should have his license revoked. 6 weeks is standard to be cleared for LIGHT workouts; 8 weeks is not unheard of. Jogging a few miles in the a.m. at 3 or 4 weeks postpartum? Unheard of.

As for the breastfeeding, I certainly hope she’s eating enough food (doubtful if her weight loss is what they claim it to be) or all those treadmill sessions are going to deplete her milk of what baby needs most — calories.

It’s a shame; Everytime I see one of these women applauded for ’shedding the baby weight’ by such obviously unnatural and/or unattainable means (i.e., plastic surgery, a team of trainers, dieticians, childcare providers, etc. etc.) I think about all the normal everyday already-hormonal moms out there who will feel inadequate or guilty because they don’t look like a celebrity at one month postpartum. Thank god for Katie and her stretch marks. :)

  28. Ali Says:

For those who say she had a tummy tuck, stop being so jealous! My kids are 12 months apart and I am the same age as Britney with the same body frame and I lost all the weight within a WEEK! No tummy tuck. You would never be able to tell that I have had 2 kids, my stomach looks exactly like it did pre-pregnancy. It has a lot do do with a woman’s age and at 24 you lose the weight alot faster than if you were older.

  29. DWS Says:

I am 6 months PP and I gained 55 lbs while pregnant with my sweetie. I dropped 30 pounds within the first few weeks…the rest has been a gradual loss thanks to me still BF’ing…I’m bad also…no exercise and still eating what I want(I’m afraid cutting back on the cals will effect my production…likely excuse :-) ~ ). So if I was actually watching what I ate and hadn’t gained so much weight while preggers, I would have been smaller than I was prepregnancy right after I gave birth. So it is possible. And I’m no spring chicken like Britney!

But as a side note, there is too much pressure now adays for women to look a certain way…now I am finding there is increasing pressure for pregnant women and post pregnant women to look a certain way too. Very sad you just can’t enjoy it and not feel like a total cow if you gain alot of weight and don’t drop it right after birth.

  30. karen Says:

I lost all of my baby weight within two weeks of giving birth to my 2nd baby. I was about the same age as Britney is now.
I was nursing every hour on the hour and not eating as well as I should have. I had gained about 25 pounds.
A tummy tuck would not explain how slim her arms and thighs appear.
And I agree, after having had a c-section with one of my kids myself (go vbac!!! go vbac!!), there’s no way I’d want to “work out to fast music”. It wouldn’t feel good and would by way too dangerous.
Another thing; she looks slimmer than she did prior to getting pregnant with this new tot. If she loses another 13 pounds she’s going to look gaunt.
She looks great now, but I don’t think she did it in any sort of healthy way.

  31. Lorus Says:

I gained 29lbs during my pregnancy and lost 32 within the first two weeks. However I was pretty overweight to begin with. I also had a c-section so I doubt Britney has been running an hour every morning since her son’s birth. It took about 2 weeks after the birth of my daughter when I felt I could walk normally 100% of the time again. Maybe breastfeeding is going well for her and she’s choosing healthy over fast food.

  32. Beth Says:

I lost 30+ pounds within a couple of weeks, after each of my three births — while breastfeeding, eating really well, and zero exercise. **shrugs** Every woman, and every pregnancy, every postpartum experience is going to be different.

What bothers me is that no matter what Britney does, people find something about it to be worthy of criticism.

  33. Sarah Says:

Who even says that this is true? Once again, this is US Magazine, claiming that they know what’s going on. I bet Britney is at home laughing about this right now, and I hope she is. There’s no way she’s working out that excessively when she had a c-section. Doesn’t anyone remember the “friend” who spoke to a different magazine and said that Britney was in bed, getting plenty of rest after the c-section, and that she couldn’t keep up with SPF?

  34. preesi Says:

    Honestly?
Celebs arent dieting as much as they portray themselves as doing…
There are at least 6 expensive ways they get the pounds to drop off quickly, High Colonics, Plastic Surgery, HgH injections, and the rest I WILL not post cause they are dangerous…
I can almost bet that Brits gotten a tummy tuck and is on the latest illegal veterinary med that makes you drop 20 pounds with no dieting or exercise…
    Alot of Celebs are nowadays…

  35. HW Says:

Not only is she supposdely running an hour a day on the treadmill, but she’s doing it so soon after having her *second* c-section in a year’s time? I would think the second pregnancy alone would put enough strain on the uterus that healing this time around would be a little more difficult. I started walking around our neighborhood (about a 1 mile walk to begin with) when my twins were 4 weeks old and that caused a fair amount of discomfort at my incision; I can’t begin to imagine how running on a treadmill would have felt. Whatever she did, she looks great – even better than before she got pregnant with Sean Preston, I think – but it’s not right for US to be holding this up as an example to new mothers on how to regain their pre-baby bodies.

  36. KKJ Says:

Sorry, but I don’t buy the “running on the treadmill for an hour” part in conjunction with the csection delivery. I know she’s young, but even so those first couple of weeks (assuming you are caring for the baby yourself) that amount of exertion would land her back in the hospital. I think she’s asking for more backlash by making these claims.

  37. Kelley Says:

Where is the love on this site? Stop the mommy-bashing, show some love for each other, and realize that all the “pet theories” about how much weight someone did/didn’t gain and how fast are all subjective. Here is another idea, just like her pregnancy photos in those same mags, maybe, just maybe, there was some photoshopping done…

  38. preesi Says:

Missy? I just had my gallbladder out on Monday and was out of the hospital and home 2 hours later and was cleaning my house an hour after I got home. I cleaned , loaded the dishwasher , did a load of laundry, cooked dinner and put my son in bed… I was shopping all day wednesday, so it really depends on the persons healing time and their tolerance for pain. Brit could have been on the treadmill and been fine.

  39. Liz Says:

I have been an avid runner for years, and I had a relatively easy labor and delivery. I still found that I had to ease back into running very slowly because my outer thigh extensor muscles needed time to recover after giving birth. The body’s pelvic bones, muscles etc. are all significantly affected by giving birth. So, anyways, I say that they photo of Britney is photoshopped first of all. Secondly, she said she was not breastfeeding at all in another interview I read. I think this is all BS, but kudos to CBB for making note of the fact that what the article describes is dangerous and unhealthy.

  40. Sarah, CBB News Editor Says:

Just a clarification – Britney has never said anything about nursing – it’s just assumed she did for about a month with Sean, because she was photographed in a nursing bra. The article about her not doing it this time around is a rumor from OK Magazine – http://www.celebrity-babies.com/2006/10/not_ready_kfed_.html.

I don’t buy the story either. Us Weekly is right a lot of the time, but I think this story is bull.

  41. Autumn Says:

I just hope Britney doesn’t get a hernia after supposedly exercising that much that soon after her second c-section in less than a year.

She’s trying to get herself into the shape she was at 18, and that’s not going to happen healthily now that she’s 25 and her body’s gone through 2 pregnancies and 2 c-sections.

(Then there are anomolies like Victoria Beckham who is actually THINNER now as a 32 or 33 yr old mother to 3, than she was a decade ago as a “Spice Girl,” but anyway…)

I wouldn’t be surprised if Britney had help, and if she didn’t I just hope she ocasionally goes to a doctor to make sure she doesn’t injure herself near her incision scar.

  42. Emma Says:

I agree with the people who’ve raised the point that no matter what Britney does, she can’t win. I’m as sick of the current weight loss obsession as anyone else, but give the girl a break! Last year, before she announced her second pregnany, all anyone talked about was how “terrible” it was that she was still carrying baby weight, and how she should get her butt to the gym. Now she loses the weight, and it’s criticism that she lost it too soon, or she had “surgical help”. Maybe she was just sick and tired of people saying how fat and out of shape she was? I know I would be!!

I seem to remember some interview Britney did where she said her mom was in the best shape of her life post-pregnancy, so maybe it all in the genes? Who knows? But it’s definitely not US Weekly. I say we just give her credit for looking great, and choosing a really flattering outfit, and be done.

  43. Emma Says:

  44. abby Says:

gallbladder surgery is totally different from a c-section. Most gallbladders are removed laproscopically, which means 5 (at most)1 inch incisions, and no major muscles being cut. A c-section, even one without the added stress of labor (which would occur in an emergency sitatuation) involves the cutting though of multiple layers of muscle. It is a far larger procedure with a longer recovery time. There is no comparison between the two.

In addition, there are no reputible plastic surgeons who will perform a tummy tuck directly after a c-section. There are all sorts of issues ranging from the hormonal imbalances of pregnancy, stretching associated, and the strain on the body after 9 months of pregnancy. I highly doubt she had one, only because I surgeon would have to be an idiot to perform it. Plastic surgeons make their careers by their reputations for small scars which are easily hidden, the scar from a tummy tuck after a c-section would be hideous.

  45. Gracie Says:

First of all, why would anyone worry about comparing themselves to Britney anyway? She is a CELEBRITY. Her job is to look good, period. That is what pays her bills. So to say that this shouldn’t be an example to new mothers on how to regain their pre-baby bodies is an understatement. Is anyone out there worth millions of dollars? Don’t think so. I am sure she’s used some unhealthy measures to get to that size so quickly, but who cares??? That is her business and she’s got the money to worry about the long term effects of her extreme dieting or whatever. I am so annoyed by comments about her having trainers, nutritionists and so on…which is why she lost the weight. I believe the average person can lose the weight too, if they are serious about it. A lot of people aren’t serious about it. Someone commented that at 8 months post pardem they couldn’t diet (2000 calories a day!?!?) or work out because it dried up their milk supply. Bullocks I say!! You need 65 grams of protein to sustain your milk supply. So if you are “dieting” by taking in 2000 calories of cheetos, then yeah you’ll have a problem with your milk supply. Not sure how walking for an hour a day would dry up milk supply, since I run an hour a day and have an overproduction problem!! I have heard a lot of excuses about why people can’t lose baby weight and most of them are just that, excuses. My main point is that us women shouldn’t look to any celebrity as the golden standard for health or weight.

  46. Missy Says:

    Preesi?

I had my gallbladder removed when I was in college. To compare it to a C-Section (something you clearly have never had) is laughable at best. You aren’t allowed to drive for two weeks, you’re not even supposed to go up and down stairs the first week at home, or pick up anything heavier than your baby, let alone jog an hour on a treadmill.

It has nothing to do with ones’ tolerance for pain or ‘healing time.’ C-Sections are major abdominal surgery. Period.

  47. katie Says:

    Gracie!!

Yes at 8 months I started dieting and it MAJORLY affected my milk supply. So don’t tell me that it is bull. It is a known fact that when you start a lower calorie diet while breast feeding it will affect your milk supply.

  48. preesi Says:

I had unnecessary exploratory surgery (they thought I had cancer while I was pregnant)at 18 weeks gestation. I requested I get cut in a c section So the scar could be hidden. If I hadnt had an infection that resulted, Id have been up and at em within 2 days. As it was I left the hospital in 4 and was home cleaning etc…
    I hate sitting still…

  49. Scarlett Says:

I don’t think she has had a tummy tuck. Maybe liposuction. From the shirt she is wearing how can you even tell she has lost so much? She didn’t even get very big this pregnancy and to me she looks pretty normal. I know girls who looked like normal a month afterwards and were alot smaller than Britney is in these photos.

  50. preesi Says:

BTW I just Googled C Section and Exercise. WALKING is recommended. Maybe she started out walking on the treadmill and worked up to running.
You cant do any actual EXERCISING, like Jane Fonda style but walking is good for anyone…

BTW I clearly remember a pic of Brit in a low slung gypsy skirt where you can clearly see a MUCH larger scar then a simple csection. It was obviously a tummy tuck. It curved around her hip bone…
    I scanned it for you:

You tell me if thats NOT a Tummy Tuck

  51. HollyCatherineSlavic Says:

I don’t know—is she really that thin? She just looks normal and is wearing not very revealing clothes. The magazines seemed obsessed with these “post-baby bodies.”

  52. susie ;) Says:

Man, can you believe the pressure she must live with? Instead of making baby (and herself) her number one priority, her body image is so important that she’s on a treadmill weeks after a c-section? What a great example for all the new moms out there who might not know better. http://www.shapeofamother.blogspot.com, have a look there for inspiration!

  53. Ash Says:

At first I was skeptical about whether she really had a tummy tuck but after looking at the scan Preesi put up, I don’t know… I just did a google image search on “abdominoplasty scar” and “c-section scar” and compared them. Britney definitely looks like she has a tummy tuck scar. Hmm…..

  54. Michelle Says:

I would just like to thank Danielle and CBB generally for the sensitive, balanced coverage of this topic. Although I do not have any children, I research children’s brain development in relation to maternal health during pregnancy and lactation. Within my field, there is great concern about this coverage and the unfortunate – and inaccurate – messages it sends to pregnant women and new mothers.

In addition to US Weekly itself, I am appalled to see that other sites are proclaiming extreme postpartum weight loss as an impressive accomplishment. At some point, a line must be drawn between celebrity antics and safe practices. As such, I am extremely pleased to see a site, which caters to current and potential mothers, is noting the obvious safety concerns with extreme post-pregnancy exercise. Again, thank you for filling an important niche.

  55. plantain Says:

Us Weekly is extremely irresponsible for “reporting’ this as being true… how does their ‘expert’ know this to be the case? I highly doubt this is the truth…
I put on 70 pounds during my pregnancy and lost 25 just giving birth… it took about 9 months to lose the rest. I didn’t diet.. I just ate good whole (organic if I could) food.. and I’m a vegetarian… I didn’t really add on to my caloric intake all that much… (and contrary to what seems to be the ‘norm’ this did not affect my milk supply). Every woman is different and while I doubt even some famous girl (with doctors/nutritionists/trainers at her beck and call) could overcome a major surgery to go bounding back on a treadmill… maybe she is taking it lightly and doing a little exercise… walking and such.. remember she was super fit (and young!) before both pregnancies….

  56. katie Says:

    preesi

    That does look very suspicious!

There is a bigger photo. I am totally a believer now. That thing goes all the way across.

  58. Missy Says:

Just wanted to chime in with my agreement re: Michelle. I wish more celebrity blogs and media outlets would be a little less celebratory about extreme weightloss after a pregnancy. The fact of the matter is that while some women are blessed with phenomenal genes and bounce back quickly with minimal effort, the vast, vast majority of us take months — if not years — to return to where we were, body-wise, pre-baby…Even with exercise and a healthy diet. And that is OKAY!

The obsession with weight gain and subsequent weight loss that some women exhibit with regard to pregnancy is something that I’ll never fully understand, I guess. The emphasis should always be on growing a healthy baby, both inside and outside the womb. How soon you got back into your pre-pregnancy jeans is really rather irrelevant in the grand scheme of things, if you think about it.

In any event, hooray for CBB!

  59. apples and oranges Says:

liz. Why are you comparing me to you? We are different thank GD. I have been running for 25 years, and 13 miles a day, but now I run 7 days a week and 5 miles. I did run 3 days after giving birth because I personally had a hard time with the weight gain. I worked and still work with a nutritionist. SO please do not comment on my input. I am a recovering anorexic. Thank you!!!

  60. sandy Says:

I had my daughter by c-section a year ago. I gained 43lbs and two weeks after I gave birth I lost 20lbs. So the fast weight loss I can believe..but walking on the treadmill and lifting weights? NO WAY! I could barely get out of bed with out being in pain. Working out that early after a c-section could really slow the healing process down which could bring on more pain, heavy bleeding and infections. Im not buying that story.

  61. yaosa Says:

It is too bad that our society focuses so much on how we look on the outside and that a woman can’t even grow another human being without being expected to look like she never did. Our bodies are not designed to stay the same and with all the plastic surgery to correct what is the course of nature is quite tragic. Even for women who never bear a child the body changes to show where they have been. It is like our rites of passage as women.

I have 2 children who are 4 and 7 and my whole life I was slim and active and never bothered about my weight. Since having my first one my metabolism has changed and I have to work and pay attention to what I eat in order to fit into clothes I enjoy to wear. My body will never be what it was before having children ( a lovely pouch is a constant reminder of what I used to carry, small as it may be) and I feel that women should celebrate the changes we undergo to show what we have experienced. Creating the facade with plastic surgery seems to negate the wonderful feat it is to bear and give birth to a child and I do not have respect for people who want to erase the proof of having given birth. These surgeries are risky and alter what we are and send a dangerous message to our offspring esepcially our daughters.

It is a little too hard to believe that any new mother would have the stamina to do all that exercise with breast feeding (which can tire you out) and after a c-section. But really the point is, why should we care how Britney or any other new mother looks ? (Except for that new mom glow:-)) And why is there so much pressure to erase what she has been through ? Her new son is barely a month old and we are supposed to be impressed that she looks like what you’d expect after a year post pardum.

I wish Britney a peaceful and joyful recovery with her family and no matter how she looks I hope she feels good inside about her accomplishments as a new mother.

  62. Alexa Says:

I want to know how at this stage she was twice that size after Sean, but now with this baby shes looking like a size 4 tops (size8 my bum!)

how doesshegetthetimewith 2 babiesand a husbandgallivanting allover

  63. Kate Says:

Kudos to you Danielle for the exerpt about weight loss being the last issue a new mom should think about. We live in a society where new moms feel as though they should be back to their old figure by the time they leave the hospital! It’s ridiculous and unhealthy.

  64. KrazyKat Says:

When you take into consideration that about 15lbs is baby & placenta, etc., plus water weight and bloating (5 lbs or so), she’s really only lost maybe 5 or 6 pounds which can safely be done in 3 weeks breastfeeding or not. And talk of a tummy tuck and lipo is just ridiculous. I know Britney doesn’t make the best choices, but she’s lost weight ALL OVER and that simply cannot be accomplished during a C-section. Not to mention that no doctor would attempt such a thing there is too much swelling and hormones/water retention immediately following childbirth. Some of you just need to lighten up. Every woman is different and it is wrong to judge based on a few photos and comments from “a source close to Britney”.

  65. Desiree Says:

I lost 30 pounds right after my baby was born by doing nothing but breastfeeding. It’s definately possible.

My daughter is now 10 months and I’ve lost 104 pounds and went from an 18 to a 4 by doing the Weight Watchers programs with BF’ing points. It’s definately possible without surgery. She could have done nothing and just lost the 26 pounds. Its not that far fetched. Most of my friends have lost 20-30 pounds within the first month as well.

  66. Kori Says:

I don’t think there is anything wrong with wanting to get back in shape. I did not work for awhile after I had my son, an hour or two away from him a day was healthy for me and did not ruin the time when he was a baby. Working out cleared my mind and kept me in touch with myself…if mama ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy! =)

  67. Kori Says:

For everyone swearing she had a tummy tuck, the recovery from that is terrible and lasts for weeks, my mom had one in March. Tummy tucks do not cut into the muscle like a c-section but they involve removing large amounts of skin, and nerves go with that skin. I definitely do not think she had one. It also leaves a long scar from hip to hip. Some people just bounce back easier, others have a tough time, It’s called genetics. If Brit’s been taking care of herself this time, that’s why.

  68. gabriella Says:

I don’t see what the big deal about Britney losing say 30lbs, is because most celebrities look great after having kids. Heidi Klum, Brooke Shields, Angelina Jolie,Kate Hudson, and Denise Richards just to name a few of many. It’s just that when it comes to Britney, she is damned if she does and damned if she doesn’t. If she didn’t look great some people would say, wow she stood fat. And I don’t see how it would make an average mom feel bad, because nobody should feel they have to do the same thing Britney or any celebrity mom does. That being said, I’m a personal trainer and seen plenty of woman drop 25-30 in 4 weeks. They especially look good when they, didn’t gain a huge amount of weight to begin with. As for Britney having a tummy tuck, who really knows but if she did, I’m sure she ain’t the 1st celebrity to do it. But even if she did, her face, arms, and legs look thinner and that comes from losing weight in general, not just a tummy tuck. Anyway Britney looks great, and can’t wait to see her new little guy.

  69. Liza Says:

I think Britney looks healthy after her pregnancy. Who knows if she lost the entire weight gained or how much she even gained during the pregnancy.

The clothes she is wearing in the latest photos are very flattering for postpardum and you really can not tell how much was lost. 40 pounds is really not that much for some women to gain during a pregnancy. All pregnancies differ from person to person.

You all have to remember, Britney was extremely fit and worked out prior to both of her pregnancies and during.

With exercising, the weight comes off much quicker. Britney was never a skinny girl to begin with, but slender with a healthy toned body (compared to many celeb’s in the magazines today). I gained almost 70 pounds with my 1st child, but I had alot of water. In addition, I am 6′ft tall and weighed 150 prior to pregnancy, so I was not a small girl but healthy. I had the baby 9 months ago and only 10 pounds away, but lost most in the first two months, since I exercised prior to being pregnant and during my pregnancy.

  70. Mommyx1 Says:

Looking at those pictures of the supposed tummy tuck scar, I don’t know. In the first one that preesi posted, it didn’t even look at all like a scar to me, it looks more like the fine line some women get when they sit and then get up. Then in the second pictre it looks more like a scar, but if it were, wouldn’t it cut right through her tattoo? The line goes right to the middle of it.

  71. Ash Says:

    Kori-

She has a HUGE scar going from hip to hip… Did anyone bother to look at that high-res image someone linked to, just a few posts up? And did anyone bother to image search google for “abdominoplasty scar” and “c-section scar.” Compare them, people. It’s obvious she’s had a tummy tuck. I’m a total believer now.

  72. liz Says:

my friend saw britney spears in las vegas oct 19th in a club she looked really nice and drunk, i guess having a good time, after being pregnant for two years who wouldnt!well anyways she looked really good !!!!!!!!!!!

  73. Heather Says:

I lost a little more than 20lbs 6 weeks after I had my daughter, it’s entirely possible!
I highly doubt any surgery was actually performed because surgens do not want to operate on a paitient, unless they have to in order to save a life, whose body is not healed from a previous surgery or illness. Surgens do not want to cause any more trauma to the body because they would be held liable if something went wrong.
As for diet and excersise, I know many moms who don’t listen to the 6 week rule, she looks great and I don’t think people should be criticizing her for every move she makes. How would you feel if it were you??

  74. fast weight loss Says:

Britney, like all celebs can afford all the help in the world she needs. Most of us would be able to lose the baby fat quickly if we had personal trainers, nutritionists, and a personal chef preparing all our meals for us.
