Did you crave sweet treats when you were pregnant? If not, what did you crave?
If you’ve craved specific foods during your pregnancy, you’re notalone. Robin Elise Weiss, Pregnancy Guide on About.com, tells us that it’s completely normal to have a particular craving during your pregnancy. Some studies show that as many as 68% of pregnant women willcrave something.
Why do we crave certain foods in general? Robin says,"Psychologically speaking, part of our cravings may simply be that webelieve pregnant women should eat certain things. Or sometimes it’ssurvival, as in I can’t keep anything else down!Watch what you’re craving, be sure your diet is balanced. Eating avariety every week is one way to do this as opposed to eating the samemeals over and over. Keep a food journal if necessary to help keeptrack of your meals."
"But," says Robin, "cravings can border on the harmful side if they begin to alter yourdiets variety severely or if you crave, harmful, non-food substanceslike clay, laundry starch or other items. This condition is called pica." If you crave these things, please discuss it with your doctor or midwife!

I feel pretty lucky that I didn’t really crave anything too unhealthy. At the very beginning of my pregnancy I craved baked potatos. After that I really only craved fruit, fresh pineapple and cantelope, to be exact. One time my husband brought me home canned pineapples and I almost killed him!!!

I haven’t had a child yet but my aunt was so odd. She craved chicken livers while she was pregnant with my cousin. And my best friend craved ice chips and the smell of gasoline and moth balls while she was pregnant.

For my first pregnancy (son), I craved spicey food, and I didn’t even like spicey food. For my second (daughter), I didn’t crave for anything. Even though I craved spicey food, I didn’t eat that much of it. Now I can totally eat spicey food without the need to drink 5 glasses of water during the meal.
But the funny thing is that my daughter will eat minor spicey food, but my son won’t.

When I was in my third trimester I found my new love- redhot hot sauce! I just couldn’t get enough of it and had hot sauce with every meal. Unlike some of my other pregnancy cravings- this one stuck. I’m still hooked to the hot sauce

I am 31 weeks pregnant with a little girl and I DEFINITELY crave sweets. Mainly chocolate and lately a thing for Haribo gummy bears. I wish I was craving fruit or something healthier!

I’m a big nerd- the only thing I craved was ice! I would get big cups of ice from my company’s cafeteria and crunch on it all day long. When I was home, I would suck on plain ice popsicles (just water, no flavor).

I have been pregnant once with my son and I craved (not very strongly) apple turnovers! I was never a desert kind of girl until pregnancy and now after.
January 10th, 2007 at 3:57 pm
Milk was my constant craving but I craved blue corn tortilla chips with peach salsa *big time*. Couldn’t get enough of it for a while. My first real craving, though, was baked chicken and, towards the end of the pregnancy, I craved Quarter Pounders. Ugh – I felt like a bad mama every time I ate one, but they were so good at the time. Now I’m totally turned off by them.

I’m normally a chocoholic and a HUGE sweet tooth. But during both my pregnancies, I craved carbs all the time. French fries, pasta, toast, anything like that. My husband had to make so many trips to McDonalds for me for fries!
January 10th, 2007 at 4:49 pm
I craved fried chicken and beef jerky when I was pregnant with our daughter. Pretty funny stuff from a vegetarian, eh? Now, with this pregnancy, I’m all about the chocolate and sweets.
Tori looks really great! She’s adorable pregnant!

I am 33 weeks along and in the begining I was just so hungry I ate anything! I still crave fast food every once in awhile. But I love green apples!

I craved pancakes when I was pregnant with my son and I normally hate pancakes! I haven’t eaten them since I gave birth 14 months ago!
January 10th, 2007 at 7:34 pm
I craved Pepsi even though I’m normally a Dr. Pepper drinker. It was very difficult to limit myself to 2-3 a week because of all the caffiene….so I ate a lot a sweats to satisfy my cravings.
January 10th, 2007 at 8:32 pm
My mom craved slimjims when she was pregunant with me, and chocolate when pregnant with the older of my two brothers. She craved fruit with my youngest brother.
Btw for those moms who craved Ice and other unuseally things, i’ve read that’s a symptom of what i think is called Pika.

tori has had a rough week-first being included in blackwell’s worst-dressed list then having her backside criticised on another blog. there’s probably a lot weighing on her mind atm, i just wanna give her a huge hug!

I’m not a big Tori Spelling fan, but wish her all the best- being a first time mom without the paparazzi stalking you is hard enough!
The only thing I remember craving while pregnant with my son was honey-roasted peanuts. I was in Walmart and saw this big display with these GIANT cans of peanuts. When my DH saw them, he was like, OMG! They lasted maybe a week….

i had the strangest craving ever that even scared me! in my final trimester i found myself craving for sand!…be it muddy sand or fine sand!…i just wanted some sand!..i tried hard to resist this strange craving because i found it wierd that anytime i would drive by a construction site i would be drooling over a pile of sand!…after a couple of months of fighting i finally gave in one night as i couldnt get myself to sleep due to the craving!…i creeped out about 1a.m while my husband and 13mnth old son slept..went out through the front door and dug up a little section underneath the grass, took a finger full of sand and poured it into my mouth!…i swallowed a considerable amount and went inside to rinse out the residue from the inside of my mouth!…i slept like a baby after that.
when i realised what i had done the following morning i ran to my obgyn to find out if i had endangered my baby and he checked me out and said the baby will be fine but it should not be repeated no matter how strong the urge comes upon me! after that in order to satisfy the sand craving i would only get close to sand sniff in the smell and i would be good to go!….
was glad when i finally had my healthy baby girl and they craving stopped the second she came out, but i was just so embarrassed when i would remember how i allowed myself to be overcome by such a nasty craving!!…

I’ve never been pregnant but I’ve craved sand and ice since I was little girl, in primary school I got sent home once for eating all the blackboard chalk!
My doctor told me that in my case it’s symptoms of a (generally harmless) condition called Pica and although there isn’t much to be done about it, it can be a sign that the body is deficient in a specific mineral, and it’s not as uncommon as one might think, especially during pregnancy. I’d just like to add that I think Tori’s outfit in that photo is darling!
January 11th, 2007 at 5:18 pm
I craved cinnamon buns the first time and mashed potatoes with my second. But those are things I normally like anyway, so it wasn’t all that odd. I just had an excuse to eat more of them!
Tori is just glowing. I love her outfit and her handbag, too.
January 11th, 2007 at 11:30 pm
Tomatoes. I had to have tomatoes. They could be fresh, or straight from the can. Salsa, marinara sauce, chili, stewed tomatoes…just had to have them! I was so sure my child would be orange when he came out!
But oddly enough, to this day, he refuses to eat anything with tomatoes in it. He must’ve overdosed in the womb

I craved fruit and vegetables with my son. I would buy 1 kilo of french beans every week and eat them steamed all by myself!
In the last 2 months however I craved liver, which normally I wouldn’t go near. My husband would go out specially to buy organic livers from one particular butcher who would order it in for me, so grateful
January 12th, 2007 at 8:57 pm
I craved milk, ice cream and milkshakes when I was pregnant, especially milk. I don’t drink half as much milk now – my daughter is now 4 months old! I still like ice cream and shakes, but it is too cold now to enjoy them!

Although she may be craving sweets, some foods, expecially from fast food restaurants are still not a healthy choice. Even ones being promoted by a sandwich chain as “health” and “low fat” 3 grams or less have 17 grams of sugar per serving. What the sandwich outlet does not tell you is that the portion they are selling you is a 2 serving size. So you are in fact eating 34 grams of sugar (5 tablespoons) of sugar in a single brownie. Although celebrities have personal trainers to loose the added weight, this is still not a good idea for the unborn child or the mother who could begin to experience diabetes while pregnant.
Food for thought.
