Angelina Jolie brings Maddox to and from school in New Orleans
Angelina Jolie was spotted bringing her son, Maddox Jolie-Pitt, 5 1/2, back and forth from school in New Orleans this week. The family, including dad, Brad Pitt, and sisters Zahara, 2, and Shiloh, 8 months, have bought a house to stay in for at least the time that Brad is filming The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.
Maddox appears to have his hair dyed blonde in places and his fingernails painted black and silver. This isn’t the first time Maddox has donned an unusual fashion trait – he has dyed his hair before and worn black eyeliner!

I just love Maddox! he’s such a character and has been since being a toddler. I love the way Angelina lets him be creative. he’s a an age where he wouldn’t let this be done to him if he didn’t want to.

Except for being outrageously naturally gorgeous, at least Angelina and Maddox are dressed like a typical suburban mom and her kindergartener (in sweats and so forth)…or at least more so than sometimes.
Okay so Maddox’s hair is a bit unusual, however back a few yrs ago (5-6 approx.) when I was working at a few elementary schools in my area, I’ll have to tell you that some parents were STILL cutting their sons’ hair in Billy Ray Cyrus-meets-Dwayne ‘Dog The Bounty Hunter’ Chapman-style mullets! So Mad’s haircut isn’t all that bad or unusual in retrospect…lol!

What do we think about his painted nails? I would let my kid do it if they really wanted to, but would not just paint their nails because I thought it was punk.

If this was Britney Spears, or Gwyneth Paltrow the comments would be different. I say that as long as he asks to experiment, and try things he should be allowed.

The difference between Angie and Britneys parenting is the safety and caring…
Angelina is a great mom, she allows them to have fun and be creative and experiment. However she puts em in their car seats correctly, doesnt drive with them on her lap, isnt out partying all night and showing her vajayjay all over town, and no one has cracked their skulls open, plus she chose a great man to be their father….
Britney on the other hand, well, hmm…

Oh and the only reason people pick on Gwyneth is cause shes snobby and acts like shes better then everyone else. As far as Ive heard shes a good mom and hasnt done anything bad…

It must be hard for Maddox to be changing school so often.

She’s sending the kids to bilingual…French/English schools. That’s cool…there’s alot in the area they live, I’m sure…

When he’s 15 with holes the size of half dollars in his ears, multiple piercings, purple hair, painted nails, and wearing a skirt we’ll talk about how cute it is.

Im sorry but my brother painted his nails and things when he was little and he in no way grew up to be as you have described. and the majority of kids who do that at fifteen if you see younger pics of them never had painted nails or highlighted hair. i just feel that it is such a closeminded view but you are welcome to your opinion and i respect that but i beg to differ that just because she lets him paint his nails and die his hair that he is going to end up as you describe.

…and it wont be any of your business will it “proudmommyof5″? Right?
How will it PERSONALLY effect YOU?
Will piercings or tattooes or blue hair change Maddox’s morals or his sunny personality?

Kudos to Preesi for pointing that out because people can dress really strangely and still be a good person inside.
It’s just that many emo kids get a bad rep because many who do dress like that congregate together and sometimes end up being the sad/semi-depressed type.
Their mood though is NOT due to the way they dress persay, but instead to what their family and general society say about them.
If your kids dress ‘funny’, ‘punk’, or whatever and then you tell them constantly that they’re “losers who won’t amount to much” (because of their dress, etc.)…guess what, it’ll be a self fulfilling prophesy and your kids will turn out feeling that they’re “losers.”
However if you still give them praise, they’ll not turn into the stereotype (”depressed/angry emo kid”) and maybe eventually start dressing more ‘normally’…or at least what their work deems appropriate.
Angelina obviously has a healthy outlook on parenting and lets them take risks she deems are safe. (Somehow though I doubt if she’d allow even Maddox to get a more than temporary tatoo at 5.5 yrs old! lol!)

I wasn’t allowed to wear any makeup at all until I was thirteen and I wasn’t allowed my ears pierced or hair dyed until I was fourteen. Now at 21, I do have purple hair (yes, really), and my two best friends have red hair and blue hair, but we’re all also at University and have never been arrested or done drugs or vandalised anything. The idea that people with non brown/black/ginger/blonde hair must be criminal lunatics is outdated and inaccurate.
Anyway, concerning Maddox, I wouldn’t let my five-year-old wear nail varnish but if he wanted a few small streaks in his hair I doubt I’d cry about it. I can’t imagine Angelina ever trying to stamp spirit or individuality out of any of her kids, and besides, Brad strikes me as a more traditional parent type, I doubt any of the three will turn out to be delinquents.

I think Maddox is adorable, and don’t have an issue with Angelina letting him have a say in how he wants to look and things he wants to try.
On another note, has Angelina ALWAYS been this skinny? Her legs look like little twigs! She would look so much better with another 10 pounds on her tiny frame.
January 24th, 2007 at 2:50 pm
I wasn’t referring to Britney’s driving safety, or parenting. I was referring to the fact that is S. Preston had different hair colors she would be ostracized, but because the wonderfully, beautiful Angelina Jolie does it, well then it must be a okay!
People act as if they know her because they made idolize her. What do you know about her parenting skills. For the record all the celebrity kids I see all look happy, that doesn’t mean they are.
It’s mean to call Gwyneth a snob. I have never gotten the impression that she tries to act better then others.

Maddox looks adorable and Ang looks great. They both look very hapy! Which is what is important, IMHO. I agree, if this was Brit walking around with SP having blue streaks or a Mowhawk people would all criticise her tremendously! Cuz its Britney. Angelina gets the support no matter what(except when she allegedly said those comments about Shiloh and not “feeling” for her). Like I have always said…”Live and let live”. Its really none of our business anyway. As much as I enjoy seeing pictures of celebs I don’t feel entitled to them and I respect the celebs wanting their privacy. Guess thats why I could never be a paparazzi!
January 24th, 2007 at 5:21 pm
I think what I am saying is if Maddox wants his nails painted and his hair dyed or in a mowhawk, fine, great for him to have such individuality. But…if it is Angelina (or any other parent) doing this stuff to him because she wants him to be that kind of punk (in style, not personality) kid, then I don’t know how I feel about that. I am all for letting my little one wear a tutu and rain boots out or anything else she wants, and if she wants blue hair when she is older, thats fine. My husband had every color hair and holes in his ears so who am I to be so hypocritical?
January 24th, 2007 at 5:38 pm
Maddox is such an expressive little boy, he’s always got that cheeky look on his face.
Actually, I’ve found that kids that are allowed to experiment with polish, hair color etc. don’t go crazy when they’re teenagers, because they are completely comfortable with who they are. I bet Mad, Z and Shi will be some of the most well rounded kids in Hollywood.
January 24th, 2007 at 5:40 pm
I like that Brad and Angelina allow their children to be individuals. It’s just hair. It will grow out. They’re just finger nails and the color can be taken off.
These things to me aren’t big deals. Angelina seems like a good mom and Brad seems like a good dad and the kids seem to be happy and healthy. I’ve seen pictures of Paris Hilton as a child and she looked like a little angel. Her hair was perfectly and traditionally coiffed and her dress was conservative, now at least to me she looks like a tramp and acts like one too. My point is the Jolie-Pitts kids will be fine, even with “strange” hair and nails, as long as their parents teach them values and to respect themselves.
January 24th, 2007 at 11:22 pm
I really think it’s odd to allow a little boy to paint his nails black, but that’s only my opinion. I’ve seen grown men with black or blue nailpolish on their toenails and I don’t like it at all, but I think especially for a child you need to set some limits with experimentation. It’s okay to tell him to wait until he’s 13, or to do so within the context of some sort of costume at Halloween, but Angie should be more of a parent and set some limits!!
January 25th, 2007 at 12:18 am
It really isn’t any of my business…never said it was, nor did I say that people who have purple hair or piercings are loosers. I had lots of holes in my ears and even tried to pierce my own nose when I was in high school (and yes, it was a form of rebellion on my part). However, I personally think (just my opinion) that Angelina is the one influencing his style simply because of the way SHE wants to be perceived. I had an aunt who had her 7 year olds hair dyed and his ear pierced, not because he asked, but because she thought it would make her look like a “cool” mom.
If Maddox wants purple hair when he’s 15, the more power to him. I would just hope that it would be him expressing himself and not his mother pushing her agenda on him. That’s what I have the problem with.
January 25th, 2007 at 1:15 am
If it were any of my business, my only concern would be the amouny of chemicals it takes to turn black hair blonde like that. Otherwise it doesn’t matter to me what a child wears or *temporarily* does to their body.
I’m much more concerned about how skinny Angelina looks. She used to look very fit and toned, now she looks frail. She needs to eat up on that New Orleans gumbo

I don’t see anything wrong with Maddox’s personal style. My little cousin who is only about two years older than Mad is always trying to change his hair. It may not be dying his hair, but he’ll say he wants to grow out into a ‘fro or he wants it cut, or whatever. His mother, my first cousin, lets him do what he wants. I don’t see the big deal. It’s not hurting anyone.
I think he looks cute, and he looks happy. That’s all I ever care about, is if the family as a whole is happy, especially the kids.
January 25th, 2007 at 11:09 am
Sorry but I don’t think a 5 year old knows that much about “punk” and “fashion” to be wanting to experiment with it, I think its probably more Angelina. And I wondered what other parents would dye they’re children’s hair? I would have thought he was way too young and kids have such wonderful, silky, soft hair, why ruin it with dye?
January 25th, 2007 at 12:25 pm
I really don’t get how people can say who is a good mom or a bad mom based on some pictures they see. IMO Angie isn’t on my list of good mom’s considering her comments made about Shiloh. But still I wouldn’t say she is a bad mom because I don’t know how she is with her kids. Pictures I see really don’t tell me a whole lot, its such a small portion of their lives.
January 25th, 2007 at 6:01 pm
A 7 yr old does not know enough to want to look punk or goth. That is Angelina dressing him that way. She wants people to think she has really cool kids. A child can be creative or expressive but they just don’t know enough to be able to put a look together. He has had a mowhawk since she got him yrs ago. Did he start asking for a mowhawk at age 2?! That is all her!
January 25th, 2007 at 10:55 pm
Of course Britney is going to get negative comments because dyed Sean Preston’s hair – he’s a year old for crying out loud!
Maddox however is 5, going on 6.
Do people not see the difference? LOL
If I remember correctly, Maddox only started getting his hair dyed about a year ago – when Brad had his hair dyed. He got his done because he wanted to look like his dad – it was HIS choice. Until then he’d have his hair shaved or in a mohawk, etc.
And as far as his clothes go… he’s dressed in band t-shirts, etc since he was a baby. I can’t remember the band, but he is/was a huge fan of them (Ramones?) and loved wearing their shirts.
Anyway, Angelina is a good mom. No matter what people say, she has always put her kids first – unlike Britney who has done nothing but put her kids last and led a very selfish, negative and toxic life. At least Angelina has never had CPS at her door or been photographed stumbling out of clubs, passing out, etc.
