My child comes first, says Carlos Delgado
"My child comes first," stated New York Mets first baseman Carlos Delgado. The 34-year-old’s wife, Betzaida,is expecting the couple’s first child, a son, on April 1st, the same day as the team’s season opener.
"I will express to the Mets my intentions to be there," he said. "Like any other father in the world, I want to be there for that great day." Jay Horwitz, Mets’ spokesperson, expects there to be no problems.
We’re aware that his wife is having a baby and whatever he needs to do to take care of the family, that’s what he’ll do. It’s always been the Mets’ policy when one of our players has a baby, no matter what time of the year it is, he’s always permitted to spend time with his wife and new baby.
The couple’s new child will be named Carlos Antonio.

That’s awesome! I wish more employers would get on board with paid paternity leave, too. I hope this inspires other organizations and companies.

I am a huge Mets fan and am so proud of them for giving Carlos the time off. While opening day maybe important in terms of the start of the season; Carlos being there for his son’s birth is MUCH

I really respect the Mets organization for allowing their players to take time off for the birth of their child. It really is important that Carlos Delgado be there for the birth of his child. Years from now Carlos will not remember that game, but he will always remember his son’s birth.
