Skating couple David Pelletier and Jamie Salé expecting first child
Olympic champions David Pelletier, 32, and Jamie Salé, 29, are finishing Stars On Ice, which ends this Friday, but they’re leaving the tour with a little something extra – Jamie is almost four pregnant – she’s 15 weeks on Wednesday – and due on October 10th. They discussed the pregnancy with the Canadian press.
Jamie –
On skating while pregnant: I was more paranoid when I first found out than I am now. I didn’t know what to expect but as the weeks and months have gone by I’m still feeling good so it doesn’t bother me. We’re taking it show by show. We’re both aware there are some things are more difficult now that I’m five pounds heavier. He’s got to lift me 15 times (during a show) so it’s definitely more exhausting for him.
She writes on her message board - FYI, I’m not the 1st skater to do this so I knew what was coming or what to expect.
On planning the pregnancy and how she’s feeling: Obviously, we’re very, very excited about the news. It’s something we’d planned since we got married and we tried to plan it around our work. We’re just thrilled. Our families off and on the ice are very excited for us. I feel great, which is lucky for what I do. It’d be a long tour if I wasn’t feeling good.
David –
On finding out Jamie was expecting: It was the best news I ever had in my life. We were ready for this. It’s fantastic it’s working out how we planned it. When we turned pro, we said we’d go for four years at a time and, meanwhile, try to start a family.
Will they be finding out the baby’s sex?: No, says a disappointed David. I wanted to find out but she didn’t.
Do they have a preference for a boy or a girl?: When you don’t have one, you take whatever comes out. My brother has had boys. I guess a girl would be appropriate but we’ll take whatever. He, or she, has got to like hockey though.
On showing a possible son his spandex skating outfits: I’ll go through my closet and say, ‘Boy, this is what you’ll have to wear,’ and he’ll say, ‘There’s no friggin’ way.’ [laughs] All joking aside, you don’t stop a child from wanting to do whatever they want. But I won’t push it.

Oo yay!! I love them! What great news!

Why would she skate while pregnant? It is dangerous isn’t it?

Congratulations to Jamie and David!
I find it extremely funny, though, how Jamie and Elena Berezhnaya are both pregnant at the same time.

I’m so happy for them!! They’re one of my favorite skating pairs.

Hearing that she is still skating is really disturbing to me. With all the jumps she does especially when practicing I would guess falling is pretty common. I just can’t believe she would take such a huge risk like that.

Oh my! I am so happy for them! I just recently saw Stars On Ice and I noticed Jamie’s first costume was looser than they normally are… I suspected something. I am so thrilled for them, they’ll make great parents! They’re my favourite skating pair of all time!

So early in the pregnancy, it’s really unlikely that she is going to harm the baby, especially with the expertise that she skates with. I am involved in a sport professionally as well, and when i was pregnant my OB said no problem as long as my heart rate didn’t get to high and up until the time that my belly started getting really big. He said the baby was very well protected in there. As long as she’s not taking direct blows to the abdomen I don’t see how it’s a big deal that she has skated into her 4th month.

Congrats to Jamie and David.
As per earlier questions, Jamie is not doing jumps and they have modified the lifts to be safer.
Alot of female skaters have skated during their first and second trimester, including Isabelle Brasseur, Kristi Yamaguchi, and Katia Gordeeva.

Even if you can and the risk isn’t high, why risk it? Just seems like a very unnecesary risk.

These two are my fave pairs skaters ever!!! Congratulations to them both!! Can’t wait to see the little guy/girl..
Diana, I am sure Jamie checked with her doctor before doing anything to harm the baby. You imply that she is taking risks, but knowing Jamie, she wouldn’t do anything to harm her unborn baby. Most pro athletes have competed and participated in their respective sports while being pregnant. As long as the doctor says it’s okay, who’s to judge them?
I hadn’t heard about Elena Bereshnya’s pregnancy, so that’s a surprise! Congrats to her and her husband (is it Anton?)

Oh, just went and googled the Elena and Anton pregnancy..Congrats to them. I also read that Kurt Browning and his wife Sophie are expecting again…congrats to them as well. (Read that on a skating blog!)
Send us links to this news and we’d be happy to post it! tips@celebrity-babies.com

Irina Slutskaya, Elena Berezhnaya,Jamie Salé, and Kurt’s wife, Sonya, all expecting at the same time! What is in the drinking water over there at Stars On Ice?!? LOL!

Elena and Anton ended their romantic relationship quite some time ago. Elena didn’t announce who the father is, but it’s rumored to be Steven Cousins; they supposedly have been dating for the past year or so.

Aww, congrats to them!! I remember watching them at the 2002 Olympics and thinking about how cute they were together. They’d make great parents and I can’t wait to see the little one.

Congratulations to Jamie and David!
They’re one of my favorite skating pairs. Can’t wait to see the little one…he or she is bound to be an absolute cutie.

Yay! This is my absolute favorite skating couple. I loved them at the 02 Olympics. And I don’t think Jamie would be skating if it would harm the baby…that would just be silly!

Awww. That’s so sweet. Congrats to the cute couple! I remember how well they did in their competitions during the 2002 Winter Olympics, so memorable. They are the fourth skating couple in a row to be expecting!! Can’t wait for the arrival of a future figure skater in October!!! I have a feeling that the little is going to be a little girl.
