Darryl Hannah wants to adopt from U.S.
Female First is reporting that actress Darryl Hannah is interested in adopting a child. However, the 46-year-old Splash star doesn’t want to join fellow celebrity parents, like Angelina Jolie, Madonna, or Meg Ryan, who all chose to adopt internationally, Darryl reportedly wants to take in a child from the United States, saying,
There are more than half a million children here in the US who need to be adopted or need homes, so-called ‘hard to adopt kids’ because they’re not babies and come from troubled backgrounds, so I think that’s probably the way I’d go.
In other news, Darryl, a devoted environmentalist, says she is always asked the best approach to going green by fellow celebs, including actors/celebrity-parents Antonio Banderas and Melanie Griffith, who were persuaded by their own little environmentalist. Darryl said,
A couple of days ago, I was at a party at Melanie Griffith and Antonio Banderas’ house for Al Gore to celebrate his Oscar-winning film ‘An Inconvenient Truth.’ Melanie and Antonio’s 10-year-old daughter Stella has convinced them to ‘green’ their houses, so I’m going to help them get solar power in their five homes and get their cars on biodiesel.

Perhaps not having five homes would be a good first step toward making less of a footprint on the earth? I know it’s not uncommon for celebrities to own more than one home, but it just struck me as ironic that the Banderas/Griffith clan has become concerned about going green in their multiple (probably large) homes. Don’t get me wrong — solar power is a great step in the right direction, but keeping several homes is unquestionably an environmentally indulgent choice that perhaps should be examined.

I just cannot take her comments regarding adoption seriously. With her I feel she says it for publicity reasons. Walk the walk before you talk the talk. She is also oversimplifying things. Both regarding adoption and the environment.

That would be great to see a celebrity adopt from the US, especially via Social Services instead of via private adoption. The children available through SS are the ones who are most often older children with special needs.

Even if she didn’t adopt (and don’t all those celebrities want publicity, for whatever reason, even the ones who do adopt??) I’m glad that she’s talking and thinking about American adoption. More people should.
As for going green, of course it’s ironic that the wealthiest have more houses, cars (even hybrids), and airplanes, yet want to reduce their carbon footprint. I’m more concerned about the home and office remodeling phenomenon, which wastes so much energy and generates so much trash. There aren’t that many people in the world with multiple homes, but pretty much everyone has done a bit of remodeling or worked at a place that has new carpet or furniture. I was taught to reduce, reuse, and recycle. That means buying secondhand things and not trading my laptop for a new one every three years. I still fly cross-country every three months and have a car. We can’t be perfect, but we can do as much as is within our conception of the possible.

Walk the walk before you talk the talk. Sorry, but all these celebs like Daryl and Queen Latifah talking about US adoption from Social Services so far are only talking about it. It makes me feel they think they better than celebs who chose to adopt orphanaged children from third world countries who need a home perhaps even more.
