Cate Edwards opens up about mom’s illness
Presidential candidate John Edwards and wife Elizabeth Edwards‘ daughter, Cate, 25, opened up to the New York Post recently about dealing with her mom’s cancer recurrance. Cate said she often thinks about the possibility of her mom not living to see her milestones in life.
I spent three hours thinking, ‘I want mom to see me graduate from grad school…’ and all those really desperate thoughts. And the thoughts come back occasionally.
Cate showed her emotional strength when talking about her mom’s ultimately fatal diagnosis, saying,
I think I’d disintegrate, but you just don’t. It’s hard to imagine how you would cope when you haven’t faced tragedy. But the strength exists, and you do get through it.
Cate is no stranger to death — her brother, Wade, passed away 10 years ago in a car accident. Cate said she learned from that tragedy that she has the strength to pull though almost anything.
That experience is the only way I know I can move on from this kind of emotional hardship.

My heart goes out to her. I can’t even begin to imagine losing either one of my parents.
