Johnny Depp on raising Picassos and refusing to wear tights
by CBB contributor Raye:
Johnny Depp has made no secret of how important his family is to him. He already brought production on Sweeney Todd to a halt to look after his nearly 8-year-old daughter Lily-Rose’s during her recovery from E. coli and now the Pirates of the Caribbean star tells OK! about how his family, which includes Vanessa Paradis and son Jack, 5, is always around even when he’s At World’s End.
On keeping them close: Yeah, they were with me in the Bahamas. The most I was apart from my kids wasfour weeks. And it drove me mad. I just can’t do it. One shouldn’t haveto be apart from your family.
On how his kids have "saved" him: Myfamily is my sanctuary now. I live for them now. I finally fond areason to exist in this world. There is nothing like it. I would giveeverything away, if I could only keep my family.
On where he’d like Captain Jack’s compass to point: It would be pointing wherever my family is.
Oh what his kids are like: My kids are very well balanced, and very grounded. I think we are very lucky.
On maintaining a childlike quality: It’sprobably ignorance. I might just be really dumb, but I don’t know. Whatkeeps you a child is your kids, hanging around your kids, watching themexperience things for the first time, watching them develop and seeingtheir imaginations bloom. That’s the key to all of it for me. Just themiracle of saving a drawing they made when they were 3 years old andlooking at one they made when they were 4. And then up to 6 and 7 andit’s like, "I’m raising Picasso."

On how they spend their time together: Oh, man, all the fun stuff. Running around on the beach with the kids, taking them out on the boat. Haven’t swam with dolphins yet, andhopefully we won’t swim with any sharks soon. We spend a lot of timetogether.
On splitting time between France and L.A.: We live everywhere, man. We try to stay in France for six months ayear, and then we live in Los Angeles for six months. It has to do withmy upbringing. I don’t like to be stuck in one place for too long. Ithink it’s good for kids to get out there and see the world. There areother interesting places than just the United States.
On the difficulty of leaving Jack Sparrow on set: I’dget home and say [in Jack Sparrow voice], "All right kids?" And they’dsay, "Dad, I’m watching Spider-Man." To say they’re used to it is avery kind way of putting it.
On Jack’s other hero: Oh man, my boy has now gone into that full-on superhero phase. But I refuse to wear the tights.

Johnny is great, just great. An amazing father, devoted (soon to be)husband, a good actor with a really cool personality. I know nobody is perfect but Johnny probably comes close.

What I wouldn’t give for a man like this. Absolute perfection all around.

Kelsi: I’m sorry, but I think that was a little mean the way you said “soon-to-be couple”. I am certainly not saying you meant anything bad by it or anything. However, it is obvious from a lot of Johnny’s interviews (and probably Vanessa’s as well, although I’ve never read any of hers) that he and Vanessa are already a couple. They have made it clear that, in their minds, they do not need to get legally married to make their love valid. From reading Johnny’s interviews, I get the feeling that it makes him and Vanessa unhappy when other people do not see them as a couple just because they are not married. And BTW, the thing about them getting married soon is just a RUMOR! Considering the tabloids are always reporting that they are “getting married this summer” (mind you, they have been reporting this for several years now), and the source of the rumor was pretty much a tabloid, I highly doubt it’s actually true.
