Jenna Elfman in Plum Magazine — photos and interview highlights
Actress Jenna Elfman, 35, expects her "low hanging" baby boy in July, but before he makes his arrival, she posed for Plum, the pregnancy magazine for women 35+. We previously posted bits from the interview and two photos — here’s all the highlights, including Jenna’s favorite baby gear!
Joint baby awakening: Bodhi and I just went, ‘What the hell are we waiting for?’ My mom was 36 when she had me. I thought I’d have kids before I turned 30. Then 30, 31, 32 came. It just went fast.
Pregnancy’s effect on her career: I always felt my body changing would create a huge barrier to my career. But I started looking around at the actresses I admire — Cate Blanchett, Julia Roberts, Rachel Griffiths — and all the ones I admire have children. Actually, the most successful actresses all have children.
Getting pregnant: We started trying to get pregnant last October. I took a pregnancy test and set it down on top of a magazine. Before I could even read the headlines, [the test] was positive.
Bodhi and I went for a walk and made an agreement. I said I wouldn’t become a fat cow if Bodhi wouldn’t get man jowls. [laughs] He’s doing awesome actually. He’s thinner now than he was before. He’s running and swimming. I swim with him, just a little slower.

The way it timed out is actually perfect. I feel like we’ve hit thatplace where we’re totally ready and not nervous. Have you ever skied?In order to ski well you have to lean down into the mountain.Everything tells you to lean back, but you’ll fall if you lean back.It’s the same thing with this. You just have to lean in and do it.
Naps: I napped every single day during my first trimester.
Cravings: Coca-Cola! I never drink soda, but now I can barely control myself.
Seeing the sonogram: It’s so crazy that I know what helooks like. I think because of that, it really doesn’t feel like I havesome other entity in my stomach. It feels like my son. Sometimes I justthink thoughts to him. I just feel like we’re hanging out together allthe time, like he’s my buddy.
Finding out the sex: I couldn’t wait to find out. Rightbefore the 16-week sonogram I said to the baby, ‘Okay. If it’scomfortable for you, it would be really cool if you could be in aposition where we could see between your legs.’ Let me tell you — hewas lying on his back with his legs all the way up by his ears! We werelaughing so hard. Like, ‘Okay! Thank you!’
Nursery: I think his colors are going to be moss green and brown. (See extended post for his crib and sling.)
Future plans: I’ll just be with my son non-stop for the first year of his life, which is fine with me.
Favorites:
Habitual maternity dark wash jeans ($186).
I wear them everyday. It’s that, or pregnancy leggings, which, luckily, are in fashion. I’ve been doing my best to maintain my aesthetic.
PSNY Avant Gradation linen baby sling in choco mint ($395).
I researched all these slings. Most were brightly colored and cheesy or too hippy. These are really elegant and made of linen that gets softer and softer as you use it.
Netto Loft crib ($1,585).
I think I want to do a Netto crib, and I’m going to have a double bed so I can nurse and lie down next to him.

I do not like these pictures at all.. she looks good pregnant but the look, the hair, the clothes, even the light..straight out of the 80’s.. eww!

The hair might be a little too bouffant and have too much hairspray, but I love the soft glow to the photos, and she still looks amazing.
The part about how the baby was cooperative and let them find out the sex is hilarious!

OK, I am really happy for Jenna and her husband . . . but I am somewhat bothered by the preoccupation with a changing body. I know that sometimes celebrity comments made in interviews are cut off or misconstrued, but it sorta seems like the motherhood decision hung on whether or not she would have a different body post-pregnancy. I certainly would not want my 4 or 6 year old children thinking that is the main concern when deciding to have a family.

I think Jenna will be a great mother.
Given her career, no doubt it would be hard to time a baby.
Perhaps she comes from a family where it seems the women’s bodies just are never the same after pregnancy? That certainly could have an impact on her decision. I’ve had this discussion with friends who worry what their bodies will look like after pregnancy. I don’t know if it delayed their becoming pregnant – it would never occur to me to ask.

I didn’t like that comment. I mean, you have babies, stretchmarks come with the territory. I see them as little tattoos
Bodies change wheater you have babies or not. I pointed this out to my “friend” who (to my face, knowing I have a kid) said: I couldn’t stand having a kid; it makes you all out of shape.
But get this, she has no kids, but is more out of shape than me. I’m five feet, 95 lbs, and I have one kid.
So I know she was speaking out of jealousy.
Your body changes when you age, too. So what’s the big deal!
Exercise and eat right and call it a life.

I was going to post the exact same thing – I feel sorry for their child if all she cares about is how her body is going to look afterwards. She comes across in those quotes as someone with an eating disorder or body dysmorphic obsession. Hopefully reality will kick in when she realizes that to be a truly connected and present parent to her child, she actually needs to (a) have decent food and nutrition (b) put her baby’s needs first – which as we all know means things like forgoing your walk or gym session to stay with your child while they’re upset or teething, or taking an hour’s nap so you’re not totally crabby and sleep-deprived. Sorry, this is turning into a bit of a rant but I do admire those celeb mothers like Debra Messing and Liv Tyler who seem to place more emphasis on being good parents than on getting their body back into shape, and don’t farm their kids out to nannies just so they have the time to work out and get skinny again.

I’m sorry but I have to say this: Don’t judge her for worrying about her body! A happy mom is a good mom. You can’t be happy if you’re depressed about the way you look.
I’m glad Jenna Elfman is honest about how she and so many other women feel about their bodies.

i know a lot of celebrities (and regular women) worry about their bodies esp during pregnancy but this interview really turned me off her. i guess i always assume she’d be a bit more “dharma-esque”…

I guess it’s easy to judge Jenna when you don’t have a job that depends on your looks. Like it or not the way that celebrities look does affect their career, and it’s perfectly natural for an expectant mother to be worried about how motherhood will affect their career. I applaud Jenna for being honest about how she feels, it seems that in today’s society pregnant women and mothers are not allowed to openly speak about the downsides of motherhood without being subjected to judgement and ridicule. Pregnancy and motherhood are not 24 hour a day bliss and I see nothing wrong with Jenna being honest about the parts that upset her.
I also think that she only made a few small comments that are getting blown way out of proportion.

I love what Jenna said about skiing and you have to just trust and let go when you have children. That is so true and I know that the moment I let go, I felt empowered and so much more in control. What no one prepares for is the rush of unconditional love you feel that blows you away and prepares you for the joy of motherhood like nothing else.
