The story behind Lucas Mencia’s birth

Comedian Carlos Mencia nearly missed his son Lucas Pablo’s birth on December 14. He was filming the upcoming Ben Stiller flick The Heartbreak Kid in Mexico when he got the call. Carlos revealed to Conan O’Brien on Late Night what he went through to make it back for the birth and why he’s forever indebted to his wife, Amy.

It was like total deja vu. I was like, ‘Oh my God! I’m in Mexico and I gottaget to America really quick!’…So I get here and when I’m coming throughcustoms…I get that one guy that’s like, ‘You’re not funny.’ And I’mlike, ‘Great, you don’t like my show. That’s cool.’ And he goes, ‘No, Idon’t. And you know what? Come over here. I’m gonna check your bags.’ And I was like, ‘No, you are not – dude, my wife is pregnant!’ And he’s gotthat evil smirk. So he starts checking my bag and I know he’s being ana-hole because he goes, ‘What is this?’ I’m like, ‘It’s a razor. Everybody knows what a razor looks like.’

And finally he gets all my stuff and there was a helicopter waiting for me. The doctor said she was supposed to give birth like six hours before I got there, so there was a nurse that was actually helping my wife notgive birth. I’ve never even heard of this. I showed up and my wifeis like this (lays on his back with legs pressed up against the desk). And I’m like, ‘What are you doing to my wife?’ And she’s like, ‘We’retrying to stop the birth so you can see it.’ And I’m like, ‘No! No! I oweher forever and ever now! I could never divorce this woman! It’s over!’ She held the baby in for six hours for nothing! It’s like the IRS – I’llpay her forever. There’s no way out. It’s one of those things where shejust gives me the look, you know what I mean? ‘Hey sweetie, I’m hungry. Iwas really thinking Japanese. What do you think?’ ‘I dunno. I think was inlabor -’ ‘Fine! We’ll go wherever you want!’

Still, Carlos, 39, appreciates everything Amy endured to make him afather, saying he doesn’t understand why men are congratulated whenthey, theoretically, have not really done anything out of the ordinary.

I like that everybody congratulates the guy like if we did anythingdifferent. I’ve been doing the same thing to my wife for 10 years. Ijust don’t want the congratulations. Just give it to my wife. I’ve justbeen doing the same thing. She’s the one that got (makes weird noises).
