"I just LOVE him and love the fact that he has turned into such a wonderful actor, partner and father. Good for him. The pic with the two of them together just melts my heart. My hubby looks at me like that still and I treasure it because some women wish they could find a good man who will still look at them the same way they did years before."

Sheryl Crow and son Wyatt at Crossroads Guitar Festival

Songstress Sheryl Crow’s three-month-old son Wyatt Steven was on hand today in Chicago as mom performed at the Crossroads Guitar Festival. Wyatt, who has his ears protected by headphones, is held by his nanny, Marva, in the extended post. Also in various photos are singer/songwriter Willie Nelson and actor Bill Murray.

His overalls are by Koala Kids.

Sarah’s note 1:45 pm Sunday: I’m now in charge of the comments on this post, and will not be putting through anything critical, especially as I’ve just added three more photos. Please don’t post anything you wouldn’t be comfortable saying to Sheryl’s face. Thanks.

    Wow! Sheryl got Marva!
Danielle? You should interview Marva for CBB.

  2. Angel Says:

Looks like Wyatt is not too crazy about Clapton’s music. :-)

  3. Christine Says:

Wow, the nanny sure doesn’t look too thrilled. :)

    Cute little guy!

  4. Sara Says:

Marva doesn’t look too thrilled but Wyatt is clearly not the picture of excitement either!
Maybe the day would have been better spent at home for the two of them, at least until he can appreciate the music. :)

  5. Rachel K Says:

Lol, I just love how Sheryl seems to be the only one enjoying herself in this photo

Wyatt is clearly ticked, the nanny looks miserable and Bill’s just like “meh”

What I love about it is that it really seems to show how much Sheryl enjoys her precious son… even during those ‘less than enjoyable’ moments :O)

  6. Isabel Says:

I’ll probably get alot of flack for this but poor little Wyatt looks sooo uncomfortable. I know Sheryl wants her son to be near her but she should have spaired him from the obvious discomfort he’s barely 2 months old. She should have waited until he’s a little older. Plus the way Marva is holding his pacifer against his mouth looks so painful. Every time I look at that picture I feel so bad for Wyatt.

  7. tine Says:

Beside the fact that there are better options than baby björn style carriers like wraps or the ERGO baby carrier, I’d be crying too if I would be carried this way.

Carrying a baby facing outwards is a big no-no!

Not only from a physiological point of view (when carrying the baby in the outwards-position the little legs don’t find any hold on the body of the carrier and are hanging down in a non-physiological manner, the back is forced into a hollow back and little boys are literally sitting on their testicles) but also psychological is it a poor choice:
“Infants in outward-facing orientations can’t turn away from surrounding stimuli. They can’t turn inward toward a parent’s body if stimuli become overwhelming. In this position the baby cannot make eye contact with his or her parent to evaluate facial expressions, social cues, and so forth to make assessment of the situation. Only choose a baby carrier that allows your child to face you … never out. There are too many events going on around your baby. A baby has no way to exclude himself from the environment by turning his head away and towards you. Healthy sleep is difficult for a baby who is facing outward. I am not a supporter of the outward facing method of carrying a child.”
From “A Baby Wants To Be Carried” by Dr. Eveline Kirkilionis. She is a human development specialist, her research on carrying children started in 1985.

  8. gianna Says:

Aww Wyatt is cute, but little guy looks pissed lol.

  9. B Says:

That truly looks like the world’s most miserable baby.
    I wonder why?

  10. Becky Says:

To me it doesn’t look like there’s anything wrong with the way she’s holding his pacifier to his mouth. It doesn’t appear she’s pushing or forcing, just holding. Although I do agree that he doesn’t look like he’s having the best time, but what baby is happy all the time? Not many that I’ve seen. They all have their moments.

  11. Kodie Says:

I don’t think there is anything wrong with how she is holding the pacifier to his mouth. Maybe this picture was taken right after he started crying and she is holding it there until he realizes what she is trying to give him. I worked at a daycare and we had to do that quite often when kids got upset because they would immediately spit out the pacifier, not realizing it would comfort them. If he was truely upset and the nanny wasn’t able to comfort him I’m sure Sheryl wouldn’t be sitting there with a smile on her face when her son was obviously unhappy.

  12. erin Says:

Yeah, I agree the baby looks miserable (as does the nanny). Clearly he doesn’t want the passy which is why this picture is a little unsettling to me. Why put such a small baby through all of the hassle? For the mommy’s sake?

  13. stephanie Says:

oh em gee, a baby crying. how unusual. someone alert child services! *rolls eyes*

  14. Renee Says:

Poor Wyatt does look angry but I have never seen or heard of a baby that’s happy and peaceful all the time. They could have been at home and he would be just as upset.Sometimes babies are that way and nothing you do seems to make them happy. It seems to me that the nanny is supporting him well and she isn’t forcing him to take the pacifer. We have only seen one picture of him being upset and people are already being critical.

  15. savanna Says:

geez, that kid is WAY too young to be carried in that position! (well, you shouldn’t carry them that way at all ;o thx tine for that great entry!!!)

  16. Sarita Says:

I don’t understand bringing such a young baby to a concert and I don’t think her nanny understands either. He’d be much more comfortable at home.

  17. Simone Says:

I really dont know why anyone would take their infant to a concert, not like he needs to be there b/c she breastfeeds him or something and even then i am sure there were more quiet places where he wouldnt have been required to wear those yellow things to protect his ears!!!

  18. Emily G Says:

Wyatt looks so upset lol…. I would be too if I had to wear those dreadful earphones! The nanny looks just as miserable!! But I have to say, Sheryl is BEAMING isn’t she! I mean she really looks very happy!! So happy for her…

  19. Renee Says:

I knew it.The mintue I saw this picture, that people would start saying she was a bad mom and selfish. For all we know he could have had gas. Also, I don’t get why everyone is being so tough on the nanny either. She has worked with some high profile people ad their kids are fine. Why be so critical?

  20. delia Says:

Ok- the nanny is not impressing me. The baby looks VERY uncomfortable and sweaty. Are those headphones on that baby hurting him? Sheryl is just sitting there watching her son look incredbly uncomfortable. He should have been inside. He is too young to know where he is at.

  21. ap Says:

Yes, you can tell EXACTLY what is going on in a situation from a single photograph. The nanny is miserable and wants to go home, the kid is miserable and wants to go home, Bill is miserable and wants to go home, and Sheryl is selfish and horrible for subjecting all of these people to the horrors of this outing.
Get over it, people. They might have been laughing ten seconds before or after this photo was taken.
If she wasn’t with the kid, she would be a bad mother. Here she’s with the kid and she’s a bad mother. So judgmental!

  22. Campbell Says:

I personally applaud her for bringing her son into a part of her world. I agree with Kodie that if her son was just plain miserable from being there, then Sheryl wouldn’t be smiling at him like that. JMO. By the way I know from the post that Marva is the nanny, but WHO is she?

Sarah’s note: She’s a well-known Hollywood nanny. She was with Deacon Phillippe for his first few weeks, (other than that, Reese and Ryan have not used a nanny), Coco Arquette for a few months, and Hazel and Finn Moder for 2 years. Julia Roberts thanked her for all her help on-stage at the Oscars.

  23. Campbell Says:

The exerpt from “A Baby Wants To Be Carried” sounds dead on, so why in the advertising photo does it she the man holding the infant forward facing? Confused.

  24. Kami Says:

Maybe this is out of line, when I see celebrities with their nannies I just roll my eyes and move on, but for some reason this picture really got me heated. Why is the nanny WEARING Sheryl’s baby? To me, one of the important reasons for wearing your baby is so your baby feels close to you!?!? Yet she has her nanny wearing him? And here Sheryl wanted a baby so bad that she adopted one so that a nanny could wear him and watch over him? The whole “Nannies in Hollywood” thing is really getting to me. Regular women can juggle work and taking care of their kids, maybe Hollywood Celebrities should try it too. Power to the celebrity parents who don’t have nannies and who do it themselves like they should be!

Sarah’s note: We assume because Sheryl was waiting to go on-stage to sing and play the guitar, and Wyatt couldn’t be with her at that time…we get the feeling she is trying to juggle it, since she brought him to work with her.

  25. Angel Says:

She can’t win,can she. If she left the baby at the hotel with the nanny, she’d be neglecting him.
Babies cry. No baby smiles all day.
He may as well have been unhappy because he kept losing the pacifier.
As for the Baby Bjorn : carrying a baby facing outward is a no-no … my god some people know it all. My babies were most comfy when we changed their positions every now and then – let them face inward a while, then turn them around. He seems well supported.
As for the nanny, I’m sure being a nanny is a challenging job every now and then. Do you smile from nine to five when you’re working?

  26. Meredith Says:

I understand wanting to be with your new baby all the time– that’s natural! But there are just some situations that don’t work with little babies and a concert seems to me to be one of them. And it doesn’t seem likely to me that those ear protection headphones can fit his little head tight enough to offer decent protection. Most babies are really sensitive to sound, too. But I really do understand Sheryl wanting to take him with her to work– it’s hard figuring out how to balance it all.

I wanted to add, in response to the poster above who said that babies don’t like facing forward, that my four month old LOVES being in a front carry in my hotsling. He fusses if in a cradle hold that doesn’t allow him to see out, but since about two months old he’s been happy as a clam facing outward in the front carry and taking in the world. Granted, in a sling he is more cuddled against me and can twist around some, but he really seems to enjoy looking out.

  27. J.M. Says:

My brothers ex always shoved my nephews pacifier in his mouth at every moan. And then when he still cried with it in she held it in there until the baby quite frankly gave up and just stopped screaming (but never actually sucking on it)! When he was 6 months he refused to take a paci and she kept wondering why he wouldn’t. I told her perhaps he never liked it but you kept on insisting that he have it! I am not saying Wyatt doesn’t enjoy his but I hate when pacifiers are shoved into childrens mouths and held there – some babies truly don’t like them. But he is still pretty young so it’s undestandable that he can’t grip it quite that good yet. And I can’t comment on the baby Bjorn thingy for I hate those things with a passion! ;)

I think it is a funny pic bc everyone but Sheryl just looks to be not enjoying themselves. But remember it is just ONE photo.

  28. preesi Says:

    Kami? I agree!

Something just annoys me about this photo and the fact that she has a nanny at all!
If Kate Gosselin can take care of 8 kids, 6 of which are ALL 3 years old, by herself, a newly adoptive mom of ONE shouldnt need a nanny.

  29. Autumn Says:

IMHO the baby was too young to appreciate the music that night, and he was no doubt there for Sheryl’s benefit rather than his own. And I agree with the comment someone made about her adopting a child, and then letting the nanny take care of it, but I guess it’s Sheryl’s choice.

(That pic is also a bit antebellum-esque much, dykwim, but I doubt that was her intention…)

  30. Annabel Says:

The baby seems fine, just a little fussy, and Sheryl is looking gorgeous. I’m glad she’s back with the wavy look.

  31. Danielle, CBB Publisher Says:

I think Bill and Marva just look bored or like they’re waiting. Take a look in the mirror when you’re not smiling or talking and I have a feeling you’ll have a similar look on your face.

Please remember to be respectful- how would you feel if Sheryl was reading the comments on this post? Would you say these things to her?

  32. m Says:

When my son was 3 mo, he wanted to be facing out in the Bjorn. He has always been a people watcher and had head control fairly early. In fact, I put him in a exersaucer when he was 2 1/2 mo because my ped. suggested it to get him off his back/head and hated tummy time. All babies are different. Your child may not have had head control that early and I would not make a comment that your child is slow or you are a bad parent. I find nothing wrong with these pictures. Relax and just make sure you are the best parent you can be to your child!!

  33. crystal Says:

Why do people have to be sooo judmental with celebrities?Whoever snapped the picture might have snapped it right before he realized that the pacifier was in his mouth and stopped crying! They probly caught the nanny at a bad moment as well!Thats why its called a “moment”.As far as him being turned outward i dont think that bad,i have 3 boys that where ALL turned that way after their first month and i promise you they are walking smiling running and most important of all OK!!!!They are 4,5,6 by the way!Stop being so judmental of celebs they are human too!

  34. madison Says:

Hopefully Sheryl does read CBB. B/c then she could read all these comments from perfect parents who obviously know how to best care for her child based on one photo that shows literally one second of time.

  35. Traci Says:

As a nanny, lemme tell ya something: I don’t smile and grin all day long. No one does. Get over it.

As for Sheryl not carrying her own child, maybe she was about to go on stage??

No one except Sheryl, Bill, Marva, and Wyatt know the circumstances at the time this photo was taken, so LAY OFF!!

  36. PSB Says:

Wow. People are being really nit-picky. Yes, Sheryl has the baby with her at a concert, but she is protecting his ears with those noise-blocker headphones. Gwyneth Paltrow put the same ones on Apple when they attended Chris Martin’s concert and everybody was commenting on how cute she looked.

Maybe the baby freaks out when his mommy is away? Mine does that. maybe she was going to be away all day at work, so the nanny brought the baby by for a few hours to watch mommy perform? There are a million reasons why he might be there.

As for the baby bjorn – such a controversial subject. I personally hate slings and feel like the baby is smothered in them – but there are people who swear by them. I hardly think that a short amount of time in an outward facing carrier is going to kill the baby. He seems to have a very experienced nanny who would not be so popular if she were endangering kids.

As for the paci – it’s possible her child has colic. A lot of colicky babies get too worked up to accept a paci, and you have to hold the paci in their mouths until their sucking reflex kicks in and they calm down. Maybe her child started crying and the paci was about to fall out and the picture was taken just as the nanny grabbed it?

My point is, Sheryl used to be a teacher, she obviously loves children and has paid for the best help around. Her kid is not at risk. She is a new mom. People really need to remember how many mistakes they made when they first had their babies. it’s not like she’s dangling him over the balcony of a hotel. Sheesh!

  37. Karen Says:

Are any of you Mothers? The littlest thing can make babies unhappy and usually at the most inconvenient moment. Clearly Wyatt does not like the headphones but they are for his protection. As for Bill and Marva have you ever had someone snap a picture when you were not expecting it, I bet you look bored or our to it. I find most of the comments rude and obnoxious. Walk in someone else’s shoes before you pass judgement.

  38. Angel Says:

Why did the nanny carry Wyatt? Well because Sheryl was on and off that stage about four or five times, doing different songs and duets.
In a photo taken a moment earlier or later, she’s seen with the guitar strapped on tuning or playing it.
What does the person asking that question expect, for her to play the guitar and sling the baby on her back?
No, because then probably she’d be … yup, a bad mother.
I know several people in the music business who use those earphones for their babies, they come highly recommended.
And babies don’t like to be carried facing forward? When my youngest was that age, all I could do to keep her from bawling was carrying her that way. She loved looking around and watching everything.
Thank you Sarah for intervening. some people carry way too much hate without knowing the circumstances.

  39. Alana Says:

Her baby boy is very cute! At 2 months babies are not settled yet , so the crying could be almost about everything. A very good friend of mine had a baby boy so sensitive to sound that, for example, spoon fallen from the table or someone’s loud voice could make him cry. He’s still that way and she just hopes he’ll grow out of it someday

  40. Principesa Says:

    Sheryl,

Give me a shout. Ditch the Bjorn. Come and get my son’s Peanut Shell. I betcha Wyatt will LOVE it.

You look smashing. Keep it up, Rocker Mama!

  41. Ashley Says:

I am just wondering why his feet look so blue in the first picture, is it from the carrier? He is really cute.

  42. deedle Says:

I love this little boy — he’s absolutely adorable. he’s gotten so chunky and even cuter! he was born with the sweet little grumpy old man face, which is yet another thing I love about him.

  43. stephanie Says:

Marva looks tired, not mad. She could also be enjoying the music- I dont have a smile on my face every second my ipod is on, but some songs you just concentrate on. If you picky people look, every other pic, SHERYL is holding her baby… HE is NOT crying and is very happy. I am a regular person, and sometimes other people hold my babies, its not against the law. I am sure Wyatt is loved (look at his size). Why dont you all psychoanalyze Britney who really cant care for her kids, and leave this wonderful, gorgeous baby and his beautiful mother alone……. :)

  44. Carolyn Says:

Aww he’s precious and Sheryl looks so comfortable and natural with him. Yay, very sweet.

I’m sure glad no one is taking pics of me and my 2 month old…especially this morning as she screamed for hours on end! Tough crowd!

  45. Xan Says:

    Tine:
Great info. Makes a lot of sense and is something I’ll keep in mind when I have kids someday. Does the same go for babies in carriages; does this change after a certain age?

Also, just a pet peeve of mine that others may share: though it’s sweet to carry your baby in slings/carriers why must we refer to it as ‘wearing’ your baby?! A baby is a human being, not a purse or an article of clothing. Saying, “carrying in a sling” isn’t that hard, people!:)

Sarah’s note: Dr. William Sears coined the phrase because his wife said carrying their baby in a sling was just like wearing another piece of clothing — it became a part of her daily routine. Carrying also usually refers to ‘in-arms’ and that became a way to differentiate it.
