What celebrities read to their kids — part two
Back in April, we ran a feature from People about celebrities’ favorite bedtime stories. This week, the magazine has again run a shorter version of the column, with picks from Denise Richards, David and Courteney Cox-Arquette, and Holly Robinson Peete, mostly dealing with common issues like sibling rivalry, potty training, and a parent going out.
Holly Robinson Peete, mom to twins Ryan and RJ, 9 1/2, Robinson, 5 next week, and Roman, 2 1/2: By My Brother’s Side ($12) by Tiki and Ronde Barber. ‘It talks about brotherhood, and with three boys, I’m constantly trying to teach them how to get each other’s backs. They fight all the time. So that’s a really good one.‘
David and Courteney Cox-Arquette, parents to Coco Riley, 3: ‘Dr. Seuss books are always great’
David’s pick: Walter the Farting Dog ($12) by William Kotzwinkle and Glenn Murray.
Courteney’s pick: Where’s The Poop? ($9) by Julie Markes. ‘Yeah, we pretty much act it all out.’
Denise Richards, mom to Sam, 3, and Lola Rose, 2: Mommy’s Coming Back ($97; now out of print) by Madeleine Yates. ‘[I read this to my girls because] when I even leave to go the store, Sam and Lola get upset.‘

Our current favorite read, Mucumber McGee and the Half Eaten Hot Dog. It has an illustration style similar to Edward Gorey and the moral of the story, it is best to ask mom before getting a snack out of the fridge.

“Jamberry” and “Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?” are my daughter’s favorites!

We had a funny series when we were growing up- the “Where did I come from?” books by Peter Mayle (the same guy who did “A Year in Provence”, etc. “Where did I come from?” was obviously about conception and birth- there’s nothing overly explicit in there about sex – certainly no sex pics. But we also had “What’s happening to me?”, which was about puberty, and “Will I go to heaven?”. There was even a “How to be a Pregnant father” book. I think there’s also a “Will I like it?” book about your first sexual experience, but we didn’t have that one.
These books were just around the house and part of the regular collection, so none of the stuff in there became a big deal or a “big” discussion, we just always knew where babies come from, etc.

I love Walter the farting dog! It’s still one of my 6yo’s favourites.
