Laird Hamilton discusses ‘rocking the boat,’ baby names, and pregnant wife Gabrielle Reece
Surfer Laird Hamilton, 43, spoke with People this weekend about his third child-on-the-way. Volleyball player wife Gabrielle Reece, 37, is due January 2nd, and according to Laird, she’s ‘feeling great’ as she continues to compete.
She’s in the best shape of her life, and she’s really happy with the way she’s playing. She’s feeling good, training hard, working out like an animal. She gets checked out every week to make sure it’s good – she’s not foolhardy.
One person who’s going to be making a big change is daughter Reece Viola, 3 1/2, whom dad is not so sure is ready to be an older sister.
She says she is, but she’s not. She is thecenter of the universe right now, and when the next one comes alongit’s gonna rock her little boat a little bit. But it’ll be great, Reececould really use it. It will be great for her.
The couple will not be finding out the sex of the baby — and Laird doesn’t understand couples who choose to discover the news pre-delivery.
It’s probably the single greatest surprise we have in our lives, and tofind out early for whatever reason — justifying the color of a bedroomor something — to me is kind of lame.
Not that Laird cares what he and Gabby have — he’s pretty much convinced it’s all girls for him anyway.
Everybody goes, ‘Oh, you’re gonna have a boy,’ and I go, ‘You knowwhat? I’m probably just gonna have a bunch of giant girls, these giantAmazon daughters.’ I just want to have a healthy child andraise a good person.
Instead of the sex of the baby taking precedence, Gabby and Laird are focusing on choosing exactly the right name — although Laird admits the final decision most likely will not come until January.
I’m the last-second guy. Gabby has a couple names in mind. She likesBrodie a lot. If it’s a boy, I’d like to call him Ledge or something –Steep Ledge, or middle name Steep, first name Ledge. It’ll come, it’ll happen, that’s the way it’s supposed to, and it always does. And names are super-important.
Laird also has an older daughter, Izabella, 12, from his first marriage.

Totally agree about finding out the sex – one of the last great surprises of life!

My husband and I have the genes on both sides of each family for all hair colors and all eye colors, not to mention the skin tones that go with each. We have the genes for curly and straight hair. What our daughter looks like will be a big surprise. Even if we both had all the dominant genes, we still wouldn’t know what she’d look like until she was here. Finding out the sex isn’t the only surprise about having babies. There’s nothing lame about finding out the sex ahead of time.
On another note, way to go Gabrielle for staying so well in shape during the pregnancy!

If I ever get pregnant I definitely want to be surprised, which is funny, because I’m the type to plan everything and want to know as much as possible in advance.
