Originally posted September 12th: Reality TV’s Ryan and Trista Sutter introduce their son Maxwell Alston, 7 weeks on Thursday, in the new issue of Us Weekly.
Bachelorette stars Trista, 34, and Ryan, who turns 33 on Friday, posed with their son — then 4 weeks — at their home in Colorado.

In her seventh month of pregnancy, Trista had been diagnosed with gestational diabetes, which was being controlled. However, on July 24, while just beginning her ninth month, Trista was "terribly nauseous and in a lot of pain,"which did not subside throughout the day, causing the couple to go tothe hospital, Vail Valley Medical Center. Worried, they told theirparents to come as well — Trista’s mom is in Denver; her dad andstepmom, St. Louis; and Ryan’s parents, Fort Collins, Colo. All of themmade it for the birth.
Having found protein in her urine, a symptom of preeclampsia, her OBtested Trista, finding elevated blood pressure as well as othersymptoms, and diagnosed her with HELLP syndrome. This occursin about 10% of women with preeclampsia or eclampsia, and includesearly breakdown of red blood cells, low platelet count, and elevatedliver enzymes. Severe cases of HELLP can be life-threatening to bothmother and baby. Trista explains,
The risks areseizures and coma, so they kept me overnight for observation. I can’tremember much of the next day. My liver was failing. The only cure forHELLP syndrome is to have the baby, so they induced me.
I was scared and shocked, but I was OK because I knew thehospital could handle a 36-week-old baby. While they were waiting formy cervix to dilate — I had contractions for six hours — my levelskept getting worse. I knew something was wrong when the doctor lookedworried.

Ryan recalls the difficult decision to change their birth plan and give consent for a C-section, after Trista continued to get worse over the course of the afternoon and evening.
Around8 p.m., they got the last round of test results and things weren’tgoing well. They said there was a chance her liver could rupture. Theywere trying to get us to make a comfortable decision to go with aC-section. Eventually we said if Trista’s health is deteriorating andwe’re jeopardizing the baby’s health, then do what you have to do.
Trista adds,
Itwas the scariest thing I’ve ever gone through, but it was scarier thatif the baby wasn’t out quickly, things could be bad for both of us.

Born four weeks early on July 26th, Max weighed in at 5 lbs, 3 oz and 18 inches long.
The birth, from Ryan’s side: Ryan was not allowed to be present for his son’s birth because Trista was put under, leaving him scared and feeling helpless.
I was worried, hearing the urgency in the doctor’s voices and seeing the activity. I assumed it was life-threatening, and that was tough. That prevents the release of joy you want to feel. When they put her under, I was rushed out. They allow fathers in the OR only if the mother is conscious. For 15 minutes, I sat in this big, empty room with things running through my head.I heard a baby scream and it seemed like it should be Max. I peeked through a window in the OR door. One of the nurses saw me, so I went in and they were cleaning Max off. I thought, ‘Wow, it’s a boy.’ I kind of hoped for that. [The couple had not found out the sex prior to the delivery.] I held him right away. I wanted Trista to be the first person to hold him and see him, but she was heavily sedated.
I felt good and bad: You have this baby in your arms, triggering one set of emotions, and then you have your wife on the operating table with 10 people sewing her up, and that’s another set.

: Because she was sedated, Trista missed some big first moments as a mom.
I don’t have that moment of them saying, ‘It’s a boy!’ And I didn’t hear him cry for the first time. I remember Ryan in the recovery room saying it was a boy, and then we talked about the name. I saw Max about three hours after he was born. I used to be a pediatric physical therapist and had worked in a neonatal ICU, so I had seen sick babies. I was scared but comforted that he was 36 weeks.
Max’s health: Max needed to stay in the hospital for 10 days because he wasn’t breastfeeding consistently. He was also put on oxygen as his lungs weren’t fully developed, Trista says.
But the doctors were encouraged by how well he was doing. He turned his head and looked my way, and I was ecstatic. He was perfect and alert, and it was such a relief. I remember saying ‘Max,’ and he looked right at me. I gave him my pinky and he was sucking on it.
I slept at the hospital, changing diapers, feeding him and really getting to know him. I had never changed a diaper or held a baby for so long before!
Pregnancy weight: Trista gained 30 lbs and says her post-pregnancy goal is "to be toned."
Max’s personality: "He’s mellow except when he’s hungry, then he gets grumpy like his dad. Right now, he’s breastfeeding every one to three hours."
During the shoot, Max cried, prompting Ryan to say,
You like to whine…just like your mom!
I skip the bad words, even though I don’t think he can understand.
On parenthood: Ryan says,
My favorite party of being a dad is watching Trista with Max. After all the hardship, seeing her so rewarded is pretty special. I love to come home to see Trista and Max sleeping — he’ll be snuggled up next to her. I also love showing him off at the fire station and letting the guys get to know him.
I felt overwhelmed at first — we don’t have a nanny. Not getting a lot of sleep is definitely an adjustment, but Max is totally worth it. Even hearing him cry — not that it’s a good thing — but hearing a baby cry in my house, because we’ve wanted one for so long, it’s just great.

When Max is on his changing table he is always looking around.

Of the neatly folded clothes, Trista says,
I was in severe nesting mode before he came!
We actually had a book shower…it was a wonderful idea from myfriend’s mom who was a schoolteacher.
Of the bunny on the shelf, Trista remarks,
That is thefirst present Ryan gave to Max. He was in an airport and brought itback for me when I was pregnant.

I gave birth to my daughter 8 weeks early due to pre-eclampsia and HELLP syndrome. I went into the hospital with SEVERE high blood pressure and they got it somewhat under control. After 2 days in the hospital I began to have pain in my upper left gastric area. They ran my blood tests again (they had done so when I was admitted and everything was fine at the time) and noticed I was getting HELLP. My daughter was delivered via c-section 4 hours later. I don’t know about Ryan and Trista, but my doctor’s told me it was probably in my best interest to not have anymore children. From my research, there is about a 50/50 chance of pre-eclampsia again and about a 20% chance of HELLP. My best wishes to them — I am glad everything worked out and everyone is healthy!

It’s kind of sad that women in the public eye who have C-Sections have to be so careful about what they say, share private details on why they had to have a C-Section, and in general be defensive of the way they brought their baby into the world. How and why a woman delivered the way she did is no one’s business but her own. Seems like so many people nowadays assume that b/c a woman had a C-Section it was elective. Yes, I understand that women do elect C-Sections – but there are plenty of legit medical reasons why a woman would need to have one as well.

He’s a gorgeous boy! I’m sure as tumultous as his entrance into the world was, his parents would do it again in a heartbeat to have him. A million congrats and best wishes to the happy parents!
As for the rampant c-section debate that ensued after she spoke about it, I hope some folks realize that while we all have our opinions on what’s right and wrong, that’s only in context of what’s best for *YOU*. You can’t assume to know what anybody else should or should not do or what is in their best interest. We’re all guilty of it to a point, but for some odd reason women are hardest on each other—especially in the bounds of motherhood. It’s sad how quickly other moms will jump all over you for YOUR choices for YOUR babies.

I had PIH & HELLP in my first pregnancy & my son was 9 weeks early. He’s 8 1/2 now & has some issues with some learning delays but is happy, healthy & smart as a whip.
I had another baby 2 1/2 years later & was monitored by perinatologists for the pregnancy and did not develop PIH or HELLP. I was told the chances of recurrence were 25%. It is possible to have more children after PIH & HELLP as long as you’re monitored closely for any early signs of either.

I second that Madison!!! I remember everyone freaking out because Trista mentioned her c-section before she had her baby. Figures everyone who voices their opinions always speak before they know the whole story. I’m glad to see Trista and Maxwell doing well..Congrats to the Sutter family.

She really went through hell and back for that little guy, who is absolutely adorable. I commend her for what she had to go through.
But back to Max, he looks like a nice blend of Trista and Ryan. They already make a sweet family!

He is adorable. Congratulations to them, their story is frightening. Thankfully there is an alternative when a mom and baby are in trouble. Scary. I would not have thought twice about saying “it’s time to cut this baby out”. Bless them.

Kudos to Madison! I have a friend expecting twin boys through IVF due in November, already hospitalized for two months to delay early labor, and she and her doctors have concluded that both she and the boys will be safer with a c-section. Yet some friends are jumping all over her for that decision. Having a c-section is often the safest option for everyone concerned, and only the parents and medical staff should have input. Everyone else should back off.

I know a friend of a friend who died from HELLP. The baby lived but the story is tragic. It is absolutely serious and I had never heard of it before. I think it is very courageous of this couple to share their story. I think the more publicity about the syndrome may help other pregnant women be aware and not take early symptoms lightly.

As the founder of the Preeclampsia Foundation, and the International Preeclampsia Alliance, and a fellow HELLP Syndrome survivor–I’m so proud of Trista and Ryan for speaking out. So many celebrities have had preeclampsia and HELLP and so far, very few have chosen to speak out. By their speaking out–they are bringing awareness to a common complication of pregnancy (preeclampsia) and it’s rarer but deadlier cousin (HELLP). Some 300 American women die in childbirth due to preeclampsia and HELLP–primarily from HELLP. Thank you both for speaking out. I believe, as do many of my fellow survivors, that awareness saves lives and in speaking out–you have helped save the lives of babies and mothers. Please urge pregnant women to know the signs and seek medical attention. For more information–we urge you to look up the Preeclampsia Foundation, Interprea, and most importantly, the HELLP Syndrome Society.

Congratulations to Trista & Ryan! I’m so glad that things are good now. I also am a HELLP syndrome survivor and know what a scary birth experience she had… not a good way to begin motherhood! I am very happy they had the courage to share their story and hope that more people will become educated about preeclampsia and HELLP Syndrome.
Also — every doctor will tell you different odds of HELLP or preeclampsia returning in a subsequent pregnancy. It’s really up to the parents to decide if it’s worth the risk. As mentioned earlier, the HELLP Syndrome Society is a great place for support and information as well as the Preeclampsia Foundation.

Congrats to this cute family!! I know how frightening it must have been to have been put under druing the birth. I was also when I had my triplets…how ironic…as the mother “missing” the birth! That took a long time to move on from that. But I have to give my husband credit. He too was told he could not be in the OR with me but he said he was not leaving and they let him stay!! It was a special yet frightening moment for him to witness our 28weeker babies being born. I could not have gone through that with out him. Sounds like Trista has a keeper too…congrats!!!

It is unfortunate that in the 21st century that a woman could die due to pregnancy. There are many doctors unaware of this condition and how severe it can be.
I delivered my baby boy 5 weeks early due to HELLP. Thankfully he was perfect, but I took a while to recover. I am grateful to be alive.

omg… so cute. i have 4 beautiful kids and seeing that baby makes me want to have another. i just love babies! i dont know either of these people other than what you see on t.v. but as we all know – that isnt really anything but a snap shot of someones life. i really hope they are as happy and joyful as they seem. that baby is a miracle and a blessing! god bless them all.

What a beautiful baby and family! So glad everyone is safe and sound. A C-section is nothing of which to be ashamed. As a Registered Nurse, I have never met an OB that would do an “elective” C-section because of the risks involved. There is usually a medical reason for it that makes vaginal birth too dangerous for the mother and/or baby. HELLP and PIH are both very dangerous conditions, and the cure is delivery ASAP. I’m happy we do have the option of C-section, as it does have the capacity of saving lives and keeping families intact. God Bless the new family!

I just wanted to let you know. Almost 9 yrs ago the same thing happen to me. I went through the same kind of pre-delivery & delivery, I even had a seizure in the hospital after he was born. It was because my platlet count was low. He is almost 9 yrs. old now. It scared us too. I was not sure I would ever have another child. Then 2 yrs. later god gave me another little boy. He is 7 yrs. old now. It makes you realize how special they are. Don’t let anyone give you a hard time about a c-section. People that have children naturally don’t have any idea what pain (for weeks) you go through in recovering from a incision like that. God was with you all and it doesn’t matter how you get those precious children here. They are worth it all. Enjoy him!!!! I watched your episode of the show. Congrats to both of you. My girlfriend just had her baby on Sept 5th a month early, drugs were administered to start labor but Mom wasn’t doing well and the decision for C-section was made at the urgency of the doctor. Mom had preeclampsia and HELLP. Moms kidney and liver function went downhill over the course of 2 days before delivery. Mom suffered 2 seizures after baby was delivered and her liver shut down. Trista & Ryan’s story shed light on how difficult some pregnancies can be. My girlfriend is at the hospital right now picking up baby from NICU to go home, they are both miracles for recovering so well.

Congrats! I’m sad for Trista and her family for what she experienced, but in a messed up sort of way, I’m relieved (knowing that everything is okay now!). I had HELLP just 3 short years ago and very few people have ever heard of it, let alone knew what to do about it. Having someone in the public eye can do so much for raising awareness to make doctors and pregnant that much smarter.
I’m now 18 wks pregnant and so far so good and considering an elective c-section if similar problems arise. I begged for a C with my daughter but was not able to get one due to other complications. It’s amazing how resilient we mothers can be – so willing to take our chances all over again!!

Congrats Sutter family! Max is so cute. He has Ryan’s eyes. But, is still a mixture of both of you. I have 5 children. None of them were planned or not planned!! I always said I was too fertile! I wish Trista was as fertile as me. Wish I could give her my fertility now that I’m finished having kids!!

Hello, I did not know the Sutter’s had a baby until I saw it on the news this week. When I heard about it, I thought that it was ironic that my first baby also came one month early (I was lifting Christmas boxes and broke my water)and had to have a C-section because her head was up by my ribcage. She weighed 5lbs 5 oz. and 18 1/2 inches long (close to Max’s size). Olivia is now 21 months, healthy and ornery. We just had our second girl and I elected to have C-section because it was less stress on me and the baby and I already had the scar so what the heck! We are done having kids but I would do it again in a heartbeat. C-sections are nothing to be ashamed about. Anyways, long story short, Congratulations Ryan & Trista! My husband almost got to meet Ryan & Trista a couple years ago at the Vail firehouse before we decided to move to Colorado. He’s a volunteer firefighter. We were passing thru Vail and so we stopped by to see what Colorado’s criteria was for firefighting. The guys there were very nice to him. Thanks Vail FD! Take care.

As a founder of the Preeclampsia Survivors website and Forum, I too am glad to see Trista and Ryan speaking out about her experience and helping to spread awareness about preeclampsia and HELLP. Both are horrible diseases, and far too many women suffer from them today. However, many continue to suffer after the baby is born….they suffer from guilt, disappointment, depression, a sense of loss and of being utterly alone in their experience. Hopefully, because of brave women like Trista, other survivors of PE and HELLP will know that they’re not alone and that it’s not their fault. Thanks so much, Trista, and congratulations on your beautiful little boy!

Congratulations to Ryan and Trista. Max is an absolute doll. I am so sorry that you had to experience PE/HELLP. And the horrible ups and downs of infertility. I can relate to you on both. I had/have infertility issues and I am a survivor of PE/HELLP. My daughter was conceived through IVF. After many years of infertility treatments. As I said I am a survivor but my beautiful daughter Madison Alea sadly did not survive.
I am so glad that you are talking about all of these issues Trista. People like you will make the world aware of the heartache of infertility. And raise the much needed awareness to the awful diseases PE/HELLP.

I am another PE/HELLP survivor. I was unlikely enough to have this in my 1st pregnancy nearly 3 years ago. luckily i was 37 weeks and already in establised labour when diagonsed and my baby girl was born naturally and healthy! I suffered with poor liver function for a while after but recovered well after a while.
I have just had baby no.2 a little boy and was montiored very carefully. I had PIH from 16 weeks and developed pre again at 36 weeks! As soon as i got to 37 weeks i was induced and my lil boy was born healthy and i had no sign of HELLP.
Thankfully, I will never know if i would have developed HELLP again 2nd time as we were taking no chances but the docs feared it was likely.
so I am proof that u can go on to have more children after HELLP as long as u are montiored EVERY step of the way.
I however am counting my blessings and stopping at 2! xxxx

Hi Trista and Ryan,
Congratulations on your gorgeous baby boy! I am so sorry you had to go through such pain and a horrible medical condition!
Hopefully, you will get caught up on your sleep and just enjoy your beautiful boy and wonderful husband!
I have a 3 yr old boy, (also born at 36 weeks). He is talking and doing so many other things! Love all your pics here on the site! All 3 of you look great!!

I can remember the day that I had worked late and found out my sister in law, Lisa had had a seizure and was not well. Her husband found her unresponsive at home and she was sent to the hospital. She was eclamptic. Her little girl now 6 was born 10 weeks earily. We hava a large family and everyone but me could be there. I saw her the next day in Intensive care and all I could do was hold back the tears for her sake.
I was with Lisa the first day she got to hold her little girl. She was so scared because she was only 3 lbs. That was a great moment for both of us.
Congratulations to the parents and grandparents. Your little boy will bring you so much joy.

Better late than never, I say – Congratulations, Trista and Ryan and baby Max! Welcome to the world, little one
I have watched your lives unfold from the very beginning of The Bachelor, and progress to Trista as The Bachelorette, and then, of course, the Wedding – all which happened between the births of my last two children. You have been a joy to follow and I wish you all the best. I’m so thrilled that you’ve found love and happiness! Many, many blessings to all three of you!

Congrats! He looks great! I was five weeks early as well and delivered on 7-27-07. I know that scary feeling. I’m glad mommy & baby are doing fine, may God bless your family and the new lil addition.

What a happy family. It sounds traumatic but at least they are all happy and healthy. I had an emergency c-section with my little girl and although it wasn’t planned the main thing is to think of what is best for both mum and bub.
