Solange Knowles discusses marriage and motherhood
R&B singer Solange Knowles spoke with Essence.com recently about motherhood, marriage, and business. Solange, 21, admitted she and her high school sweetheart, Daniel Smith, divorced, but they are committed to their son, Daniel Julez, 3.
Well, I am no longer married, but I think it’s very important not to dish details. We are friends and we co-parent our son. When he gets older I don’t want him to read anything about me saying anything about his father or vice versa. When there’s a child involved, I think the less information given is best.
When asked about Julez, Solange bragged he is wonderful, amazingly sharp child:
He’s more than talking and has a smart mouth already. He’ll be 3 this month.
Solange believes Julez will go into show business, like his mom and Aunt Beyonce.
Unfortunately, it seems like something he’s interested in. He really likes the limelight.
Solange also discussed her newest business venture, Baby Jamz, a hip-hop line of children’s toys available exclusively at Wal-Mart.
Baby Jamz is a passion project for me inspired by my son, who loves hip-hop music. I wanted to do a children’s album, which I talked about in the media a couple of times. This toy company that wanted to launch an urban toy line reached out to my father about me. I ended up giving them a lot of ideas and became an executive on the account. I had to go to Bentonville, Arkansas (Wal-Mart’s headquarters), put on my suit and make this presentation. It was really cool for me and good training as an executive.
Solange hopes to release her second album, Solange & The Hadley Street Dreams, in the near future.

What a responsible way to handle questions about her divorce. I totally understand her not wanting to comment on it for the sake of her son.

The Baby Jamz thing seems like a great idea. My friend’s son just auditioned last week or the week before and is going to be in the videos. The songs are all kids songs redone all hip and cool and sung by Solange. She said Solange is really sweet and had Julez up there while they were filming the videos

I am wondering how a hip hop toy line is different from any other toys? If you look at dolls like Barbie, etc. they already do some in hip hop clothes. Just interested to see what are hip hop toys.

Solange seems to be very mature, and I applaud her for taking the high road and not taking cheap shots at her ex-husband/child’s father. Denise and Charle, Kim and Alex, Britney and Kevin, Travis and Shanna and so many more celebrates, would do well to handle their matters in private manner.
She seems very happy and secured young lady that doesn’t need to compete with her older sister. I love the fact that they have two different style of singing.
I also give Matthew and Tina credit for raising their girls with class and pride. Say what you want about the Knowles sister but you dont see them drunk and carrying out like the Paris, Lindsay and Britney.
Her son is adorable.

I kind of figured she was no longer married, but at least she finally came right out and said it, so the speculations can end and everyone can move on with their lives. Julez is such a cutie and I have no doubts theyre doing the best for him as parents.
