Kathy Hilton on motherhood with Paris and Nicky
Access Hollywood recently did an article titled ‘Access Investigates Celebrity Moms: Kathy Hilton’. In this article, Access takes a look at Kathy Hilton’s, 48, beginning as Hilton heir wife and mother to famous daughters, Paris, 26, and Nicky Hilton, 24.
Click below for the highlights.
Kathy Hilton’s mother taught her that ‘marrying rich was the goal.‘ Kathy followed her mother’s advice and married hotel tycoon Richard Hilton,52, when she was 19. When her first daughter, Paris, was born, Kathyand her mother believed that Paris was going to be famous. Vanity Fair’s Judith Newman told Access:
Sheand her mother started calling Paris ‘Star’ and they really did thinkto themselves this is going to be someone bigger than Monroe [Marilyn],bigger than Princess Di.
The paparazzibecame familiar with Paris and Nicky’s names very early in life asKathy and Richard hosted parties in their daughters’ names. Kathy told Access that she appreciates the paparazzi:
They’re always wonderful and sweet with us. I believe they are doing their job.
Kathy also commented on drawing the line between friend and mother to her daughters, Paris and Nicky. Kathy said:
You know what? We are very, very close. We are on the phone, but I am their mother you know. There is that fine line.
Kathy thinks her daughter Paris is a very hardworking woman. She told the German press:
Paris works so hard. I always say, Paris, you also have to stop now and again and smell the roses.
Ultimately, Kathy believes that she is a strict but loving mother. She said:
Iam very strict. I call my daughter up and say, ‘That is enough now, stop, I don’t want to hear any more. You better stay home.’
Besides Paris and Nicky, Kathy and Richard Hilton are also parents to Barron, 17, and Conrad Hilton, 13.

Interesting.

Bigger than Princess Di? Blasphemy! What an insult to a great woman’s memory! What has Paris done to contribute to this world like Di has?

Just now I feel sorry for Paris!
Her mother ought to be ashamed!
Paris never had a chance to grow or explore her own wants and needs. Its all what Mommy wants or pushed her into.

Paris is a hardworker? How hard do you have to work to drive under the influence and make porn tapes? Wake up lady your daughter is hollywood trash!

Talk about denial.

Nausicaa: I find it odd that what disturbs you most about Paris’s mom’s comments is that she compared Paris to Princess Diana. Marilyn Monroe is the only one of the three who made something of herself on her own. A true rags to riches story. She didn’t do it by being born wealthy like Paris or by marrying a prince like Diana (who was also born rich BTW).

This explains a lot about how Paris turned out the way she did. I actually feel sorry for her!

wow, reading this actually makes me feel bad for paris and nicky. it sounds like it’s heriditary though, if kathy was told to “marry rich” by her mom. some cycles are hard to break. so sad.

Maya, it’s disturbing that her mother compared her to Diana is because Diana did a lot of charity work…not saying she was perfect cause she wasn’t but she seemed like a good person who was friendly and nice. She did so much charity work, I can’t list them all. She may have been born into money but she didn’t carry the same attitude that Paris has.She may have married a prince but we all know that didn’t end up happily ever after.

I dont see how people feel bad for Paris. Lots of people have grown up with parents that dont do their job. It is still paris’ responsibility to become a proactive, thoughful woman. People come out of worse and tun into better everyday. Paris has every opportunity to do good. SHe has the money to help people, to travel and donate her time to a good cause. She has all the money in the world to go to any school in any country. Yet, she parties, drives drunk, and puts out sex tapes. She is 26. She can no longer use the “young and dumb” excuse. That maybe harsh, but i have little sympathy or patience for people like her.

Hi Renee, Yes, of course I agree that comparing Paris to ANYONE that has done anything substantial with his or her life would be an insult to that person. I was just pointing out that I found it odd that Nausicaa thought comparing Paris to Diana is “Blasphemy” while she didn’t mention anything about Marilyn Monroe. I think thinking that a comparison between Paris and Diana is “Blasphemy”, i.e. “disrespectful to GOD”, is taking things a bit too far. As you pointed out, Diana was no Saint (and neither was Marilyn Monroe), but for some reason people have come to view her as such. This can be seen in “The Queen” which I recently saw and was perplexed as to why people were mourning her loss as if some great leader or head of state had died…

Kathy Hilton would make a great Mama Rose in “Gypsy”.
I’m really amused she thinks she’s “strict” – what strict mother allows her pre-teen daughters to go club-hopping all around Manhattan? Those poor girls were doomed from the start. The amazing thing is that Nicky has managed to build a career away from the spotlight and keep her underwear on.
I believe Paris is a hard worker, but honestly, I think Conrad Hilton must be turning in his grave. Can you imagine how mortified he’d be if he knew the the first thing people associated with the name Hilton was the term nip-slip?

Oh wow kathy’s mom told her to marry rich, how smart of her and kathy followed lol.

well said Renee!!

It appears that she was speaking of her opinion when Paris was a baby… saying she was hoping the girl would grow up to do more than Monroe or Diana. I did not take it to indicate that she felt that Paris currently is doing more than that.
I also felt that Kathy indicated she wanted Paris to be “more famous” than the other women (or any women it seems…). She didn’t seem to indicate that she felt -how- they were famous as a factor in this at all.

Denial much?
October 6th, 2007 at 5:55 pm
*IMO*There are some things that celebs/families say, were they should have just kept quiet and this statement is one of the times, “marrying rich was the goal”, I’m sure this makes her husband soooo proud of their marriage.
October 6th, 2007 at 7:42 pm
this was early 1980s-diana had barely married charles…i agree with maya-none of those women were perfect, but diana & marilyn’s flaws r often glossed over. people believe(and remember)what they want to believe.
October 6th, 2007 at 8:06 pm
It would be great if there could somehow be documentation of her parenting of Paris- or if she could make a list of all the main things she did in her parenting. Then people who were about to become parents could just NOT do anything on that list! It is sad how shallow Paris is- she really has no capacity for deep thinking or insights. How does one raise a child like this? I wish I knew exactly so I could do whatever I could to not raise a shallow child.
October 7th, 2007 at 7:45 am
Is it surprising that a mom would tell her daughter to marry rich? I know my mom did.
October 7th, 2007 at 2:10 pm
When Paris’ mum and grandma thought she’d be ‘bigger than Diana’ then they obviously thought of Princess Diana at that time – the newly wed 20 year old, not the woman Diana became/turned out to be over the years that followed. Back in ‘81, for the vast majority of people Princess Di was just a pretty girl who’d managed to pull a prince. Marilyn Monroe on the other hand… oh well. A young mother should be forgiven for bursting with pride and love for her first baby, and for whatever silly comparisons she might make.
October 8th, 2007 at 2:05 am
Was this supposed to be only about Paris, or did Kathy just choose to only speak of 1/4 of her children?
October 8th, 2007 at 1:23 pm
The article is a bit confusing — I thought at first they were saying Paris’ parents were about 33 years apart in age. In reality they are about four. Just thought I’d throw that out there. (Makes her sound like slightly less of a golddigger IMHO!!!!!!)
