Update: Isla Fisher and Sacha Baron Cohen welcome a daughter
Update: OK! reports, and we hear, that the baby is named Olive.
Update October 23rd: Isla’s rep has released the following statement to US Weekly,
They had a beautiful healthy baby girl. Mother and daughter are doing great.
Source: US Magazine
Originally posted October 19th: Actors Isla Fisher, 31, and Sacha Baron Cohen, 36, are rumored to be new parents following the birth of their first child.
A CBB reader tells us the baby is a boy named Sadler James,(not Satchel, as previously posted) making his debut around 11 am onWednesday morning in Los Angeles, weighing in at 6 lbs, 11 oz. Isla hadchecked in on Tuesday evening.
Australian media such as The Age and the Daily Telegraph are reporting it is a girl born on Wednesday evening. Adelaide Nowsays Isla’s Australian management company, Shanahan Management, hasconfirmed that it is a girl. Stateside, however, her reps remain mum.
We will update as soon as clearer and more official news is released.
The pair never officially announced the pregnancy, but Isla did speak publicly on it beginning in July.

Wonder if that’s why they were hiking/walking the other day!
October 2nd, 2007 at 9:18 pm
Yeah, didn’t we see a pic of Naomi and Liev out hiking too the day she went into labor?
October 2nd, 2007 at 10:25 pm
oooh! im on the edge of my seat! Cant wait to hear, im still saying girl on this one.
October 2nd, 2007 at 11:28 pm
I’m thinking boy, can’t wait to see this baby! I LOVE Sacha, brilliant comic.
October 3rd, 2007 at 7:30 am
Um, that quote is meaningless. Liz doesn’t even suggest that she *knows* that Isla has given birth, she just says that she thinks she ‘likely’ has by now because she’s heavily pregnant. Anyone could have said that at any time over the past month, is this really newsworthy? ‘Someone thinks that Isla has probably maybe had her kid by now’?
Sarah’s note: That’s why it’s under rumor.
October 19th, 2007 at 7:30 am
Congrats to them! Cant wait to hear the correct details! I have to admit though I thought the baby was going to be bigger than that..her bump was pretty round!
October 19th, 2007 at 7:49 am
Congrats to them! I knew she would have they baby soon, she looked so uncomfortable lately. I actually love the name!
October 19th, 2007 at 8:02 am
The reports here in Australia say it’s a girl. Either way congrats to them.
October 19th, 2007 at 8:18 am
I knew it would be a boy, even though it is still not confirmed, Im not sure how anyone looking at her could not automatically guess a boy. Her belly was the same as Bridget’s and I see some of the same shape in Elisabeth Hasselbeck, so Im guessing boy for her too!
October 19th, 2007 at 8:24 am
Wow, it’s about time! It seems like Isla has been pregnant (and miserable) forever! Congrats to them, hope everyone is healthy and happy.
October 19th, 2007 at 8:34 am
If it is a boy won’t they wait to name it? Sacha is pretty religious and I think they have to wait 7 days to name a boy (My Judaism is a little rusty…)
October 19th, 2007 at 8:56 am
Wow, really thought she was going to have a huge baby! The size of her bump was enormous, poor thing.
October 19th, 2007 at 9:06 am
I hope it’s a girl! I’m so happy for them!
October 19th, 2007 at 9:43 am
Yay! It’s about time. It seems as though she was pregnant forever! I think girl, too. Can’t wait to hear what they had.
October 19th, 2007 at 10:29 am
Perez Hilton says that she had a baby girl
October 19th, 2007 at 11:13 am
i love that name (even if it may not be the right one)!
October 19th, 2007 at 11:14 am
I think it’s a boy
October 19th, 2007 at 11:55 am
http://www.perezhilton.com/ is saying its a girl too.
October 19th, 2007 at 12:43 pm
To miameows(and anyone else who’s interested),the father goes to synagogue(or shul,as some of my more religious friends call it)on the first Shabbat(Sabbath)after a baby is born and he says prayers and asks for blessings for the health of the mother and child. If the baby is a girl, she will be named at this time. If the baby is a boy,he will be officially(for religious purposes anyway)at his bris(circumcision)on the 8th day after his birth. Of course, all babies are usually named at the hospital/clinic or wherever they might be born for the purpose of the birth certificate. Most people give their baby an English name for everyday(school, etc.)use and also a Hebrew name. Some of the more strict, religious Jews will only give a Hebrew name which they will then find the spelling for in English(again for school, etc.) An example is a friend of mine(she knows I’m using her name here)is Arlene(her Hebrew name is Yonah-that’s the spelling in English because obviously I can’t type Hebrew letters here.) Another example is a friend named Chana(that’s her name we used in both English and Hebrew classes.)
October 19th, 2007 at 5:25 pm
Dont know if thats true or not but i on perez hilton it says a girl. either way i cant wait to see which it is and see it1
October 19th, 2007 at 5:39 pm
Cute name! Anyone know if its Sad-ler or Sade-ler?
October 19th, 2007 at 5:44 pm
yeah..i have read on several sites that it is a girl!! congrats to the couple anyway
October 19th, 2007 at 5:57 pm
Oh I like Sadler much better than the first name posted!
October 19th, 2007 at 6:08 pm
I like Satchel better actually.
Sadler looks like a typo of Sandler.
Though it could also be a hybrid of their first names.
October 19th, 2007 at 6:22 pm
The Herald Sun (Australian Newspaper) is this morning reporting that she had a boy.
October 19th, 2007 at 6:35 pm
So are we still not 100% sure if it is a boy or girl? Its odd that it is under “rumor” but there is info on the name and birth weight. hmmm….weird.
Sarah’s note: Yup, still not sure! The info is CBB-exclusive that we received from a source. Because we have not used this source before, we are taking the information with a grain of salt, but still wanted to post it for readers to see in case it ends up being true when Isla and Sacha actually release the details (if they do)!
October 19th, 2007 at 7:01 pm
Hmmm…if you google her name, 90% of the results regarding the birth say girl. I would take the source with a grain of salt. Tabloids have been going back and forth on the sex of this baby since she “announced” she was pregnant.
And regarding how she was carrying, take Naomi Watts and Bridget Moynahan. They both carried extremely differently and yet both gave birth to boys. I honestly think that is nothing more than an old wives tale. Some women fall into the myth and some don’t.
I guess we’ll have to see if they say anything or in go out public with him/her anytime soon! (I’ll refrain from using “it” since we are speaking of a baby)
Sarah’s note: Right, but the Google results are all referencing back to the same Australian article. It’ll be interesting to see what the truth ends up being! At this point the reps haven’t even confirmed the birth in the first place!
October 19th, 2007 at 7:41 pm
I do think it would be extremely funny if they did not announce the details, making us all wonder, only to be seen in public with a baby dressed in a neutral color like yellow, green or white.
October 19th, 2007 at 7:57 pm
Congratulations to Isla and Sacha. I bet little Sadler is a cutie pie.
October 19th, 2007 at 8:13 pm
i tought she would have a girl.. cause that bump of hers was really high… but oh well.. not a fan of the name. but best of luck to the new parents.
October 19th, 2007 at 9:23 pm
I had a huge baby belly like Isla and my son was 6 lbs 12 oz…. I also carried high like her….. funny, I was always told carrying high meant a boy….. can’t wait to know for sure! Loooove Ali G Booyah kasha…
October 19th, 2007 at 10:02 pm
Congrats to them!!! I still think it’s a boy, but either way am happy that the baby arrived healthy and both mom and baby are doing well. Congrats on the birth of their new son/daughter. Can’t wait to hear the confirmation!
October 20th, 2007 at 12:15 am
Yay!!! It seemed like she went way past her due date. I can’t wait to find out if its a boy or girl and what the name is. Satchel James Cohen would have been really cute though.
October 20th, 2007 at 2:36 am
i dont know where you get your information from but everywhere in the UK is reporting its a girl. The papers here are not quoting the australian paper they are quoting a source close to the couple.
Sarah’s note: We’re quoting a source at the hospital. Again, we haven’t used the source before and are taking the information with a grain of salt and will wait for US rep confirmation before we post ‘it’s a boy’ or ‘it’s a girl.’ We would hate to say something was definitely true and then have it not be.
October 20th, 2007 at 4:52 am
I thought they’d wait until he was 8 days old to name him (if it’s a boy). Seeing as though he’s an Orthodox Jew and all …
October 20th, 2007 at 9:18 am
Hahaha. Sheri, I like your idea. That’d be taking this whole not announcing the pregnancy trend to the next level. They could wait months, even years really, before it would be clear if it was a boy or girl if they just dressed it neutrally. Funny idea
I’m interested to see which source is correct on this one. I hope they DO announce something. We’ll see…
October 20th, 2007 at 10:25 am
The whole “carrying high” or “carrying low” bit is such malarky. It doesn’t mean anything. It all depends on the mother’s pre-pregnancy body, how big the baby is, and how the baby is positioned. Congratulations to the new mom and dad. All I can think of is Borat saying “Baby is a boy…pause….NOT!”
October 20th, 2007 at 12:10 pm
Wow, she got so big and the baby was under 7lbs. Guess that shows how every pregnant woman grows/shows differently
October 20th, 2007 at 1:49 pm
I cant believe that baby was on 6lb 11oz, she was huge. cognrats to them!
October 20th, 2007 at 9:28 pm
Amelie
A lot of Orthodox Jews tell the English name right away but wait until the bris (8 days after birth for a boy) or baby naming (any time during the first year for a girl) to announce the Hebrew name.
I am really dying to know if they had a girl or boy. Sadler is such a unique name it sounds unisex to me. I guess we’ll know soon enough, because if they have a bris, they will probably have some sort of family ceremony, which will leak out to the press in due time.
October 20th, 2007 at 11:52 pm
I highly doubt that the name thing is correct. Sacha has been widely known to be very religious. Isla even converted to Judaism far before they were even engaged. I remember hearing about how she was taking classes to learn to cook traditional Jewish meals. If he is very religious, his son wouldn’t be named right away because of Jewish traditions…not until the 8th day after the circumcision, right? As far as what I THOUGHT she was having, I did think she was having a boy. I do kind of have a secret longing for them to have a girl though…just because I feel like Sacha would benefit from one…I thought Borat was funny, but I still think it was offensive to women. haha.
October 21st, 2007 at 5:46 am
Rye, If sacha is very religious then how did she get pregnant in the first place. Doesnt judaism condemn sex before marriage also. Anyways thats not the point here. Congrats to them. Im hoping its a girl but i really like the name Sadler..:)
October 21st, 2007 at 11:42 am
Kirsty-
I know a girl named Sadler, so for all we know, it could still be the name.
October 21st, 2007 at 11:55 am
Touche! Kirsty, you are absolutly right. I didn’t even think of that argument before I posted. Who knows though! I still have heard that he is very religious…but then again, if he was VERY religious would he have made fun of Jewish people the way he did in the movie Borat? I can’t wait to find out what they had though.
October 21st, 2007 at 2:13 pm
Kristy and Rye
Sacha is “Modern Orthodox” not Hassidic Orthodox. I have many MO friends and they all have sex before marriage and some don’t even wear yarmulkes. The main differences between MO and other more mainstream sects of Jews is that they stay home on Shabbat, go to synagogue once a week and keep kosher. There’s not a lot of emphasis put on not having premarital sex, like there is for Hassidic Jews. If Sacha were truly Hassidic/Orthodox, he would wear a yarmulke, have a beard and wear traditional dress.
Some of my MO friends have announced the English name right away but waited until after the bris/baby naming before telling the Hebrew name, but some have waited until the ceremony to announce both names. Who knows what Sacha and Isla did, since they are so private.
On another note- I would love to see if that baby inherited her red hair.
October 21st, 2007 at 5:49 pm
Sacha Cohen isn’t orthodox.
He may come from an orthodox family but he himself isn’t.
Hasidism is a current within judaism but they aren’t more religious then any other orthodox group, modern orthodox included.
Any ORTHODOX group respects HALAKHA (jewish law) and are shomer mitzvot (keep the mitzvot). That’s what orthodox means.
This includes what kind of person you marry, to respecting shabbat, kashrut, and the laws of purity (taharat hamishpacha). It is because of the laws of taharat hamishpacha that we don’t usually have premarital sex (but then we’re only human and make mistakes too)
The difference between modern orthodox and some other groups? Us ladies don’t wear black tights in 90°F lol and the men wear colored shirts as opposed to the white shirt black pants garb…oh and we have tvs hehe (and some even read gossip sites
)
Anyways, Sacha is proud to be jewish but he certainly is not orthodox.
Oh and valid orthodox conversions don’t include cooking classes but it does include classes on the laws of everyday life: keeping kosher, keeping shabbat, laws regarding holidays etc etc. Like not driving or carrying on yom tov and shabbat… something that Isla didn’t seem to worry about this past kippur.
October 21st, 2007 at 10:19 pm
Thanks Noa, for clearing that up. Always interesting to learn details.
I have some English-Jewish friends who know Sacha’s synagogue in England, which calls itself an Orthodox synagogue. However, in the UK, most synagogues are “Orthodox” (which seem more like Modern Orthodox or Conservadox to me) or “Liberal” – which I think corresponds to Reform, but I could be wrong. I’m sure there are a lot of Chabbad or Hassidic people in North London too, but I don’t believe Sacha’s family is Hassidic, though they are obviously very religious – supposedly not very supportive of his relationship with Isla, because she wasn’t born Jewish. Maybe this cute little baby will change their minds.
October 23rd, 2007 at 2:44 pm
Her rep just confirmed to US Weekly that they had a “beautiful healthy girl” last week. Looks like it’s a girl indeed!
October 23rd, 2007 at 3:28 pm
Oh I’m so glad it’s a girl! I wonder what they’re going to name her…
October 23rd, 2007 at 3:42 pm
I KNEW it was going to be a girl! woohoo! this is the first celeb baby i got right.
Where the heck did your source get their info. Kind of odd to make up a gender, a birth weight AND a name!
Sarah’s note: Apparently the person knew someone in the hospital at the same time as Isla. We hadn’t used that source before and obviously won’t be again! Hopefully the post was clear enough the readers knew we had to wait and see until the rep said something — and now we know!
October 23rd, 2007 at 3:52 pm
Congrats to Sacha and Isla on their new baby daughter!
Hope they decide to share more info, name, and maybe a picture or two!
October 23rd, 2007 at 4:05 pm
Oh good, I’m glad it’s a girl! I thought it was a girl for the whole pregnancy.
October 23rd, 2007 at 4:19 pm
I love being right! I KNEW it was a girl! I bet she is beautiful. I’m not expecting to see a pic of her anytime soon, though!
October 23rd, 2007 at 5:03 pm
Yeah I was thinking girl all along too which is why I was surprised when many places were saying boy. Not because of how she was carrying or anything like that but I just pictured them with a girl.
October 23rd, 2007 at 6:58 pm
i’m happy to hear “Mother and daughter are doing great”, but it worries me that they dont provide details ASAP. i always think something bad happen to them. i do respect their privacy, but oohhh the mystery, has me anxious (sp?).
October 23rd, 2007 at 7:19 pm
I thought they were going to have a girl as well, so I’m happy I was right! :-p
Congrats to Isla and Sacha! Can’t wait to hear a name.
October 23rd, 2007 at 7:59 pm
Aww it’s a girl indeed!! Congrats (again) to them on the arrival of a healthy daughter! Can’t wait to hear what they named her and can’t wait to see her first pics. Know she’ll be a beautiful baby. I think and bet however that she’ll look more like Sacha than Isla.
October 23rd, 2007 at 8:06 pm
For those commenting on the carrying high or low as an indication of the sex of the baby, its simply an old wives tale dating back to Victorian times. The myth goes: Baby girls are carried high because they need the “protection” of the mothers womb; while the boys are carried lower because they are “eager and independent” to get out into the world and “explore”….
Sexist notion but thats where it comes from, definately doesnt determine the sex of the unborn child
October 23rd, 2007 at 9:59 pm
the only wives tale i use is the one where if it’s a girl, you gain weight all over your body. if it’s a boy, it’s all belly. for the most part, it’s pretty accurate. it was definitely accurate for Isla!
October 23rd, 2007 at 11:52 pm
HA! I knew we all weren’t going crazy. The CBB consensus (myself included) was that she’d have a girl. Glad to see we haven’t lost our touch at reading bellies. I’m really hoping we can get a picture sometime before the kid graduates from college!
October 24th, 2007 at 12:33 am
As much as I like reading about celebrity babies and hearing about them, they do have a right to privacy. Unfamous people don’t announce to national tabloids when they are having babies or when they’ve had them. Celebrities do not have a responsibility to announce the details of their baby. Therefore I don’t think there is anything to be assumed when Sacha and Isla didn’t confirm anything right away. They didn’t have to and there should never be any assumptions made because of that.
I love to hear about celebrity babies, but I also respect that they want their privacy, especially when it comes to their children. They may have made the choice to be famous and in the spotlight, but their children didn’t.
October 24th, 2007 at 1:21 am
So it won’t be either Sadler or Satchel? Thank God for that! I hope they pick something normal but pretty.
October 24th, 2007 at 10:35 am
I knew it! She did not look like she was carrying a boy. Not that I’m an expert…
October 24th, 2007 at 11:07 am
Congratulations to I&S. Wow, can NOT wait to see what this lovely will look like. Can only imagine w/ the combo of I&S. Just curious, I ‘ve never heard the “wives tale” about gaining weight all over or just belly determining sex. How does the xx,xy factor into where on the body a woman gains weight?LOL! That seems like it might be more of a genetic decision, if you will, your DNA determining how each person distributes fat throughout their body. Of course I’m sure there are a million different people who would give a million different versions of the “when I was pregnant w/ a boy/girl I gained weight this way or that”. But I was just curious coz I’ve never heard that one. Anyway, guess it makes all the guessing kinda fun!
October 24th, 2007 at 1:22 pm
I really like the name Olive, even though I like Olivia better. But I bet she is one beautiful baby.
All tha happiness to Isla, Sacha and Olive.
October 24th, 2007 at 1:28 pm
Olive? I LOVE it! I normally wouldnt like that name, but it seems like it would fit. I wonder if she got her mamas red hair?
October 24th, 2007 at 1:37 pm
LOVE the name! Sacha and Isla both have unique names so Olive seems perfect! Cannot wait to see pictures!
October 24th, 2007 at 1:53 pm
Not a fan of parents who name their babies after food, Olive, Peach, Apple, etc. But to each his/her own.
I’m noticing that Oliver is becoming quite popular, so maybe they had Oliver picked for a boy, and Olive picked for a girl–who knows.
October 24th, 2007 at 1:53 pm
Not a fan of the name but Congrats!!!I really hope she gets her mothers hair..
October 24th, 2007 at 1:59 pm
Olive?
It reminds me of Abby Breslin in Little Miss Sunshine. Hmm not really into the name but after Apple and Pilot is anything really too wierd these days?
I hope the baby looks like her mama! lol
October 24th, 2007 at 2:01 pm
I was hoping she would have a girl; I’ve been a fan of Isla since her Home and Away days, and I could just see her with a daughter – whom I hope inherits the red hair! And I actually quite like Olive, if that’s the name. It’s fairly original, without being strange, and it would be as cute for a baby as it would be appropriate for an adult.
October 24th, 2007 at 2:09 pm
i love the name olive, but am so bummed they used it…it was the name i had picked out if we had another girl (one boy and one girl so far). congrats to them! can’t wait to see her…i’m sure she’s gorgeous!!!
October 24th, 2007 at 3:34 pm
If they haven’t released any details about the baby, how do we know the info about the name is correct? I wouldn’t be surprised if they don’t ever release any info.
Sarah’s note: We don’t. It’s just what OK! is reporting so we tried to be clear on that.
October 24th, 2007 at 4:09 pm
Olive isn’t actually a new name at all. Quite the opposite: it was a very popular name in the 1800’s. I checked the social security statistics on baby names (http://www.ssa.gov/OACT/babynames/), and Olive was in the top hundred girls’ names right up to the turn of the last century. So I’d see it as an unusual but “classic” name.
October 24th, 2007 at 5:44 pm
I like the names Olivia and Oliver, but I personally don’t care for Olive. I think of Olive Oyl from Popeye. Oh well, who knows if that’s really even the name since there has been so much incorrect info so far, but if it is, all that matters is that Isla and Sacha like it!
October 24th, 2007 at 6:38 pm
Love Olive!
October 24th, 2007 at 6:57 pm
Yeah Olive isn’t a new name or even meant to be named after food as someone said. It was just one of those names that was really popular years ago when our grandparents were around and earlier along with Mary and Jane and Martha and Grace etc etc e.g. Like Popeye’s ‘Olive Oyl’. Old names are coming back in anyways! I’m not really a fan of the name, Olivia would have been nicer but I don’t see it as very ‘out there’.
October 24th, 2007 at 7:23 pm
Not crazy about the name olive, but congrats to them.
October 24th, 2007 at 8:03 pm
Olive TOTALLY fits them. I don’t know, I always pictured them with a boy. Congrats anyway!!
October 24th, 2007 at 8:42 pm
That’s so cool. I just had a baby girl on 9/25 and her name is OLIVE! And for those who think it’s wierd, Olive is actually an old-fashioned name and was very popular many years ago. Although I get lots of grief about the name we chose, I think it’s beautiful and classic.
October 24th, 2007 at 11:09 pm
i love the name *olive.* i’ll bet she’s named after a deceased relative. congrats to them!
October 25th, 2007 at 12:15 am
Congrats! I’ve wanted Isla to have a girl the entire time, I think SBC would be so cute around her. As for the name Olive, I was skeptic at first but Im slightly warming up to it. If anyone has seen the show pushing daises, one of the main character’s name is Olive, and of course, miss abigail breslin’s character in little miss sunshine was also named Olive. Buuuuuut OK! has been misleading in the past week and lying about stories so unless rep from Isla and SBC’s camp says her name is Olive, I wouldn’t hold your breath.
October 25th, 2007 at 8:01 am
Olive is such a beautiful name.. love it!!!
October 25th, 2007 at 8:35 am
Congrats to them! I also like the name Olive. It’s quaint and cute.
Marie Osmond’s real first name is Olive, after her mother, Olive May Osmond.
October 25th, 2007 at 9:07 pm
Hah! I called girl months ago, & there were so many dissenters! Olive is a very old name — my Grandma is Olive Mae.
November 3rd, 2007 at 1:17 pm
I wish Borat was my dad!!
CONGRATULATIONS to them both
November 5th, 2007 at 3:36 am
I bet it will be one gorgeous child.
