Angelina Jolie shares Thanksgiving plans
It seems that Angelina Jolie can do anything she sets her mind to, but the award-winning actress and world-renowned activist says that she is yet to conquer a Thanksgiving turkey. When it comes time to cook the traditional feast, Angelina says she’s happy to "chip in" — but even she knows her limits.
I’m not much of a cook, so we’ll see what happens. We all chip in, but I… don’t think anybody in my family wants me to handle Thanksgiving dinner.
Because her children with actor Brad Pitt — including 6-year-old Maddox, Pax, turning 4-years-old later this month, 2 1/2-year-old Zahara and 17-month-old Shiloh — hail from multiple continents, the celebration for the Jolie-Pitt clan is all-inclusive. Said Angelina,
We celebrate Moon Festival for my boys, who are from Asia, and Kwanzaa and things like that…so we certainly try to celebrate as many of those as we can and bring in all cultures.

She should try Alton Brown’s Roast Turkey recipe. I am not a good cook by any means. I burnt the toaster waffles this morning! But using his recipe I can cook one heck of a bird!

The moon festival traditionally is to celebrate the abundance of the harvesting season for farmers however now exists mostly to celebrate family and togetherness with mooncakes, lanterns and thanking the gods. I know this will probably be censored but I really wish some people on these boards were not so ignorant about other cultures and ways of life for different people. I’m not a parent but I believe that it is vital that everyone makes a conscious effort to educate themselves on the differences of the world in order to raise children that are more aware of the world in which they live. Possibly one day, the inequality and prejudice of the world can then be lessened. I love the way that the Jolie-Pitts are raising four kids with such bright futures and they set an example for many families.

“The Mid-Autumn festival is named “Tết Trung Thu” in Vietnamese.
The Vietnamese version of the holiday recounts the legend of Thằng Cuội, whose banyan trees were uprooted after his wife accidentally urinated on it and took him with them to the moon. Every year, on the mid-autumn festival, children light lanterns and participate in a procession to show Cuội the way to Earth.
In Vietnam, Mooncakes are typically square rather than round, though round ones do exist. Besides the indigenous tale of the banyan tree, other legends are widely told including the story of the Moon Lady, and the story of the carp who wanted to become a dragon.”

C’mon I don’t think not knowing about Moon Festival constitutes ignorance. I grew up in Asia and a lot of people around me didn’t really know what Moon Festival is about either (except an excuse to eat mooncakes and BBQ).

i think the effort is great but kwaanza is a black american celebration. z is african, and this is a holiday not observed there. i am black (american) and i don’t know anyone who celebrates it.

So I didn’t know what the Moon Festival was until I just read this post and the comments. Happy to learn something new today. Am I ignorant though by now knowing what the Moon festival is all about? HA, that’s a good one.

Spot, I don’t think your comment is fair. Do you extensively know everything there is to know about every cultural tradition in the world? If not, then how do you expect everyone else to? I live in Nebraska. Do you know what our Applejack Festival is? How about Homestead Days.
There was a post a while ago about a baby who has both her father’s and mother’s last names as her last name. I was confused because the father’s name came first and I had never seen it that way. I asked other posters to explain because with this being a worldwide site, I knew that someone could educate me on those traditions. Two very kind posters explained it without making me feel stupid.
We as parents (I have three) can raise non-prejudiced children without knowing everything about every culture. The key is to celebrate the differences and strive to learn more. But it is impossible to learn everything. This site, I believe, can teach us all more about these cultures because it is a gathering place of all races, religions and cultures.

Sorry if this is a repeat. i think i hit the return button twice. this site is so enjoyable because, like today, not only do you get to see this wonderful family, but you also get to learn something important about the world. i think angie and brad would b e pleased if they knew this cause this is what they are working for in a sense.
