Nicole Richie celebrates impending motherhood at baby shower
As 90 guests looked on, an 8-months-pregnant Nicole Richie enjoyed her first baby shower on Sunday, and People reports that the former Simple Life star received several gifts that seemed to be intended for a baby boy. Nicole and her boyfriend Joel Madden have previously indicated that they were opting not to find out the baby’s sex, which our source re-confirmed for us last week.
Working with the Los Angeles Free Clinic, Nicole and Joel have created the Richie Madden Children’s Foundation, which will assist mothers in need. Guests were asked to donate gifts to the clinic, and in the coming weeks, a website will be developed allowing the public to donate as well.
Invitations for the party — which featured a Wizard of Oz theme –were hand-delivered on Thursday, the magazine reports. The party was thrown by Nicole’s little sister Sophia and friends Paris Hilton and Masha Gordon. Nicole’s mom Brenda served as host.

Awww, I was hoping that, between her and Christina, at least one of them would have a girl (especially since so many celeb babies lately have been boys)…and since Christina has pretty much revealed that she’s having a boy, I was hoping that Nicole would have a girl.
Also, I find it a bit odd that they got some baby boy gifts at their shower….Yet not only have they stated multiple times that they will not be finding out the sex, but when CBB talked to their exclusive source (a friend of Joel’s) recently, the source also stated that “They have NOT found out the sex, and they are not going to”).
Now, I can understand Joel and Nicole telling a little white lie about not knowing the sex (I mean, they certainly wouldn’t be the first celebs to do so!)…But I find it hard to believe that Joel would ask his friend, CBB’s exclusive source, to lie for them. If they had decided to find out the sex but didn’t want the media and the public to know, I would think they would tell the source to simply say “no comment” or “they’ve asked me not to discuss that” or something similar.
In any case, hopefully CBB can have their source clear things up for us the next time they speak to them.
Sarah’s note: Hopefully she will! Joel just mentioned again recently that they don’t know the sex too, I think they’ve been very clear on that.
I saw a list of more things they received, and a lot of it is yellow, brown, and green, so it sounds pretty unisex. Perhaps they’re receiving things for both sexes, or some of the items listed are for the charity.

I have said from day one that both christina and nicole know the sex of their babies, but most likely don’t wanna share it with the public just like other celebrities in the past, which I see nothing wrong with and I still stand by my opinion. I also felt both of them would have baby boys, and I still feel that. I think halle berry will have a son too, but jennifer lopez in my opinion is having a girl. Maybe joel’s friend the one that is giving cbb all this information honestly doesn’t know the sex of the baby, maybe they have only told certain people. Anyway can’t wait to see nicole and christina babies, didn’t make a difference if it was a girl or boy to me both girls and boys I find equally cute, but I just pictured both of them with boys.

Who wants to bet the have a boy and they name it Richie (?something) Madden like they did the charity they started. Personally I think that would be a really cute name!

I think that’s great that they asked guests to donate items to a charity. Of course people will still want to buy items for Nicole’s baby, but I think it’s wonderful that mothers and babies in need are benefiting from their shower as well. I wish more celebrities would do showers like this.

i thought that too – about the baby being named richie madden. i think it would be very cute – but i think they could use it for a girl as well… also – i know people who get gifts for each gender when they have chosen to not find out the sex. i don’t think getting a few boy things means definitively that it is a boy – although i personally think it is.

I am so impressed that they are doing something to help women and children in need! That’s so great. I hope they continue to have a healthy, happy pregnancy. (And to think I was so anti-Nicole in the past…)

Maybe it’s just me but when buying things for people who don’t know the gender I usually lean more towards boy since there isn’t so much gender neutral stuff out there anymore. You can always put a girl in blue, most people are more reluctant to put a boy in pink

I forgot to mention this in my last post: To be perfectly honest, it creeps me out a little that the media manages to find out what gifts celebrities receive at their baby showers, as well as who the hostess was, who threw the shower, etc. I mean, do the paps actually go into the house or location where the shower is been held and take pictures?
If that is indeed the case, I think that’s going way too far! I understand that the paps have a job to do, but geesh!
Sarah’s note: Some of the less scrupulous stores release a list of what was bought or registered for to the media. As for who’s hosting, in this particular instance, the invitation was released that listed that info.

Looks like a boy, why would guests buy boy things if they didn’t know the sex of the baby, same with christina. And a tee-shirt that says your having a boy lol. It’s pretty obvious what both ladies are having IMO

I disagree gianna. They have both said they don’t want to know until the delivery, and Paris and Joel’s friend have said the same thing. I believe them, especially since a lot of the shower gifts are going to charity anyway. The only thing on there that’s specifically boy is the shirt. Like someone else said, you’re more likely to put a girl in blue than a boy in pink.
If they were definitely having a boy or a girl, I think more information would have leaked by now. When Denise Richards said she and Charlie didn’t know the sex of Sam, all the tabloids still knew she was having a girl because of friends of there’s telling them. I think if Nicole and Joel actually knew, it would be out by now.
I think stores and the media like to pretend that they know to boost sales and look like they got a scoop. They have a 50% chance of being right anyway, so they just go for it.

Aren’t most of the gifts going to the clinic? So would it really matter what gender they are for.
What a great idea for the charity. They really seem like level headed people and it’s nice that they want to do good.

I personally don’t think just because joel’s friend said he doesn’t know the sex, doesn’t mean they don’t. We don’t even know how close of a friend, this person talking to cbb is. When it comes to celebrities, everybody wants to think their close friends lol. I’m sure he is a friend, but honestly most of the stuff he has told us, we can assume for ourselves, that they are thrilled about the baby, wanna marry in the future, you really don’t need a source to tell us that, we pretty much know those stuff from pics and from what joel has said himself, not to mention when the friend of joel confirmed the pregnancy the tabolids had been saying it for weeks and nicole was only like 2 months back than. It’s possible they don’t know the sex, but just because celebrities tell us they don’t know the sex doesn’t mean they are always saying the truth, they might wanna keep some things private. I know denise richards, catherine zeta jones, admitted they lied to the media when asked if they knew the sex of the baby because they just didn’t wanna share it, which they are entitled to IMO. Heck jlo flat out said it was a lie she was pregnant back in october, and we all know that’s not true, so for me personally I don’t believe every single thing a celebrity says about their lives, because as much of a fan I am, I know the truth of the matter is they don’t wanna share everything nor do they have too. And when joel was on tyra banks show when he admitted he wanted a son, the feeling I got was he already knew it was a little boy. Time will tell, but i’m betting it’s a boy for both christina and nicole.

Okay, I just looked at the maternity t-shirt…and the baby pictured on it could easily be a boy or a girl. The only thing that suggests that it’s supposed to be a boy is the circle of blue behind the baby.
Now that I have seen the shirt, I definitely wouldn’t consider it a “baby boy” gift. Since all of the other items listed also seem to be gender neutral, I really think that Nicole and Joel are being truthful when they say they don’t know the gender of the baby.
