Helena Bonham Carter on her pregnancy and toy annoyances
Actress Helena Bonham Carter, 41, expects her second child next month. No, she and Tim Burton do not know the sex, and please don’t bother to guess (see below). In the latest issue of BlackBook, Helena shares her pregnancy annoyances, as well as the problem with 4-year-old son Billy Ray’s toys.
Here is my knee-jerk list of the little things in life thatirritate. (I’m pregnant, so basically everything annoys me.) Such as:
1. People — particularly men — saying with surprise, ‘You’re stilldrinking caffeine?’ as if I’m performing a criminal act on my unborn asI tuck into my treasured one-a-day cup of tea/coffee. Yeah. You trynine months of gestation and self-abnegation before you start censoringmy diet. Your mother was probably on vodka, and do you have three heads?
2. People who say, ‘Is there another in there?,’ or, ‘Wow, you aresoooo big!!!’ One might not be technically fat, but still ‘big’ doesnot work for me.
3. People I don’t know who, unsolicited, guess, with absolute conviction, what sex of child I’m going to have. (I have no idea.)
4. Seeing actresses in films and models in catalogs pretending tobe pregnant with a solitary neat football of a bump on an otherwiseunchanged body. Haven’t they noticed that everything inflates… boobs, bum, legs.
5. Kids’ toys that come with no batteries, thus delaying instantgratification of both parent and child. (Also demanding extra excursionfor adult.)
6. Kids’ toys that require more than 20 minutes — and an engineering degree — to assemble.

Wow, and I thought I was an irritable pregnant woman! Nice to hear somebody being so honest about things and really speaking her mind.
November 19th, 2007 at 2:23 pm
HELL YEAH!!! I couldn’t agree more with every single one of her comments. Especially comment numbers 2 and 3!!

yes, all of those. One woman insisted I was having a boy, my sono indicated a girl and indeed, I did have a girl. She worked in the deli in my office building so I saw her every day. She kept asking how my baby boy was doing, “is your baby boy kicking” etc.. so annoying. I also got the “are you having twins ” comment a few too many times.

i agree with everything she said. 100%.

Hahahaa! She is just GREAT!
And don’t worry, there’ll be NO guesses coming from this fan!

She’s hilarious, especially about the caffeine. The French would have died out long ago if the odd coffee or glass of wine hurt their babies. Doctors say okay, I figure go with it.
I admit I do feel a bit censorious about women smoking during pregnancy- my sister-in-law and cousin both did this and they both have asthmatic daughters. Every time my SIL complains about what a hassle the whole asthma thing is, I want to scream at her. But then again, I feel judgmental when people smoke in general, so it’s not just a pregnancy thing.

Go Helena! lol Especially on the coffee and pregnant models who aren’t really pregnant!

That was a good read and very honest!!! I was laughing in agreement the whole time!

Hahaha. I love this woman! I especially got a chuckle out of #1.

I was just thinking about Helena and her pregnancy yesterday, and here’s a post on her!
I’ve said this on other Helena posts, but I could not love this woman more. Her list was hilarious, and I agree with all of her points 100%.
Gorgeous woman.

I love this woman. I had my second child about 3 months ago and everyone just keeps making remarks about how I am doing “so good” at losing the weight. Don’t be fooled into thinking this is a compliment. You would think I had a terminal illness. I love that she said that everything swells on you. Cause everyone thinks you get this little cutesy bump. I got a cutesy GUT. But both my guys are Gorgeous so whatever. I love her though she is an awesome actress and I love people who freaking tell it like it is.

I was thinking exactly the same when I was pregnant! Everything was annoying me and moreover I was oversensitive.
So even I don’t know her personally, I guess she awaiting a little girl!

I just love her!! Everything she said was true and I most especially relate to #1! People looked at me when I was crazy standing in Starbucks at 6am for my fix. Judgement abounds and some folks are never happy until they can get their two cents in. Go Helena!!

While I do not consume caffeine and I do believe it’s bad, I have to agree with the rest of these. While #4 is also my biggest pet peeve, I have to add to #4: when women in movies evidently have no idea they’ve been in labor, then their water breaks and they have a baby 3 minutes later. How unreal is THAT?!?!

I love the Brits. They can be so acerbic and tell you exactly how they feel and they sound perfectly charming all the while. I wish I could be this witty when dealing with parental critics and busy bodies. I tend to be very thin-skinned when it comes to people poking their nose in my business. And, you don’t have to be pregnant to feel this way! Bravo, Helena.

I remember when Britney was pregnant, she would get crucified by many when she had a starbucks or whatever in her hands.
I completely agree with every point she makes and im glad she said it because a more hated celeb would most likely be slammed over such brutal truth remarks

I have given up SOOOO much already that my hot chocolate is my caffeine fix and NEEDED to maintain some sanity in my hormonal preggo life-
I am glad to hear about a celeb who actually GAINED weight and did not “feel pregnant” at all- thanks for telling it LIKE IT IS!!!
katya ( with FOUR more weeks to go…)
