Inside Nicole Richie and Joel Madden’s Oz-themed baby shower
Reality star Nicole Richie, 26, and rocker Joel Madden, 28, celebrated their baby shower on Sunday. Although a report yesterday said that Nicole received a boy-themed t-shirt, the couple repeated again to InStyle that they do not know the sex of their baby, and hammered that point home by serving pink, blue, and yellow martinis, as well as sending guests home with pashmina wraps in the same color combinations.
The Wizard of Oz themed shower was planned by Mindy Weiss, and included touches like ruby slipper centerpieces, a yellow brick roadlined with candy, and a live band performing songs from the film, such as ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow.’ Nicole said,
It’s my favorite movie and has been ever since I can remember. It’s fantasy.
In lieu of gifts, Nicole and Joel requested children’s books to begin a library for their baby, and asked that other presents be donated to the Richie Madden Children’s Foundation, their new project with the Los Angeles Free Clinic. Joel explained,
It’s a really cool way we can celebrate our child’slife with something positive. And celebrate other youngcouples who are just starting out and will enjoy all these things thatpeople donated.

It’s nice to be supported by your friends and family. There are people here I haven’t seen in so long.
Longtime pal Nicky Hilton shared,
We all went to school together. I’m seeing all my friends from grade school and it is like a reunion. Nicole will be one of the first in our circle of friends to have a baby.
The Madden family is going baby crazy — Joel and Benji’s younger sister Sarah is having her own child in December.
This is my second baby shower this week. My sister had one too.
Mom Robin piped in,
I’m going to have two grandchildren in the next few months!

Actress Rashida Jones hit the mini-donut station twice, and encouraged other guests to go back for seconds as well.
Don’t deprive yourself, try the donuts!
Other food served included a buffet stocked with onion rings, macaroni and cheese, roastbeef tenderloin, and a full pasta bar (one of Nicole’s strongest cravings).
Nicole and Joel check out baby portraits of themselves, which were set up at the shower.
The cake read, ‘There’s no place like having a baby at home.’
Gifts sent to the Los Angeles Free Clinic included 120 full size products from Nature’s Baby Organics, the products shown here, and more.

Great pictures! Looks like they had a great time. It’s also nice they created that foundation. I hope a lot of people helped out with that. And although I believe them when they say they don’t know the gender, I still think it’s a boy.

Just curious, why didn’t these people go to walmart or babiesrus or even target to buy ALOT of items to donate instead of such expensive items? I know that if I went to a free clinic and received free items, I would much rather have wanted six months worth of diapers instead of a name brand pair of maternity jeans.
Great concept but I think it could have been carried out a bit better.
Sarah’s note: The maternity jeans and things on that list are items NoMi boutique emailed us and said people bought for Nicole.

I’m not surprised that someone raised by Lionel Ritchie would be thinking of others. Nicole has all the makings to be a great mother. They seem like a down to earth couple and I wish them all the best in this next phase in their lives! That will be a gorgeous baby!
She also has great style and taste. I love her dress and the cake is beautiful. It looks like it was a fun and relaxing shower.

My take on the donating the gifts: is that it’s the nicest way to say, we want to buy our owns things, in our own taste etc… I know so many people return the gifts they receive at showers because it does not go with their decor or just overall with what they had in mind.

Wondering if the cake is a hint that they are planning a home birth. Gosh I wanted one so bad had c-sections with all 3 of my kids, sucks!
