Nicole Richie opens up about her pregnancy
In a two-part interview airing this evening and Wednesday, Nicole Richie, 26, chats with Access Hollywood about her pregnancy, clearing up rumors, describing how the experience has changed her, discussing names and tattoos.
Click below for the highlights and video.
Nicole again confirms that she and boyfriend Joel Madden, 28, do not know the sex of their baby, due in early January — although if she had it her way, that would not be the case!
We don’t know actually. We’re waiting to find out, which has been a lot harder on me than it has on Joel because I’m sonosy. I like to know everything.
If he wasn’t at every doctor’sappointment, I probably would have found out by now just behind hisback and not told him. But he’s been in the room every time so I haven’t really had a chance to sneak away and ask the doctor!
Another thing the couple is holding off on is tying the knot — Nicole feels it would be too much going on at once.
Eventually, yeah, [we will get married]. Well, look how much has happened this year. I mean, just let me rest a littlebit, you know. I gotta hold something for when I getolder. I can’t have everything happen all in one year.
Nicole tells Access about discovering she was pregnant, and sharing the news with Joel — unfortunately, she had to do it over the phone.
I didn’t believe it. I was in such shock. I tookabout five different tests and then I made my best friendtake a test because I knew she wasn’t and then we compared them. Iwas like, ‘No.’
And then I called Joel, and he kind of knew –- that’swhat is so weird. I told him and he was not surprised at all. His tonedidn’t change one bit. We had to do it over the phonebecause he was in Europe and I was over here. He was so excited right off the bat.
On the topic of names, Nicole and Joel cannot chose.
We can’t agree on one. But I figure I’ll be in the hospital for at least a day, so I’ll figure it out then.
Both Nicole and Joel are heavy on the tattoos — Access wanted to know what they’ll think if their child wants some as a teenager.
I actually have a theory; I think that whether we have, a boy or agirl, they’re going to be so embarrassed of Joel’s tattoos and mytattoos, because I have nine, because you never want to like yourparents. Does that make sense?
[Joel] has sleeves. I really thinkthat they’re going to be embarrassed because he’s their dad, so I havea feeling that they just won’t get them. At least that’s what I hope.
Throughout her pregnancy, family has become extremelyimportant to Nicole — she’s spent time bonding with Joel’s mother andapologized to her own parents for her past transgressions.
When I found out that I was pregnant, there was just something inside of me that felt aresponsibility to mend any issues that I’ve had with my parents in thepast, because, listen, I’ve put them through a lot.
You just want to heal any wounds beforehand, before I become a mother myself.
Fences seem to be mended, as Nicole reveals that Lionel — who took some time to warm up to the news — doesn’t stop asking about the baby.
Of course, a father’s first reaction — he was quiet and didn’t really know what to think. I just said, ‘Okay, sothat’s the news, so call me tomorrow.’ You know, I like to give him aday whenever I give him news. He called me the nextday and was so excited and now he just doesn’t stop.
[The baby] is all he talks about, actually. He has all these names that he’s ready for the baby to call him in substitute of grandpa, because he doesn’t like grandpa.
One thing Nicole is missing? Sushi.
Sushi is the hardest thing I’ve had to give up. It’s my favorite food. I was going maybe four or five nights a week. I cannot wait. I’m so excited.

I’m starting to dislike her less now that she seems to finally be getting her head on straight. I’ve said it before, some people need a child (Regardless on your views of marriage) to get their lives on track and I think she was one of them. Good luck to them both, I am curious about the future munchkins name.

Ah, c’mon Lionel…what’s wrong with Grandpa?

I like her attitude about marriage. Glad she is not getting married just because she is pregnant. Worry about the child and your relationship first, don’t get married because you feel like you ‘have to’. Good for them!

Increasingly impressed by her and think she is the most adorable pregnant woman I’ve ever seen. Wonderful interview.

Joel kinda knew she was pregnant before she told him……….interesting

As someone who didn’t like Nicole’s lifestyle choices in the past, I must say I am really impressed. She seems so relaxed, so confident, so happy, and I think that is awesome! She seems like a real person having a baby. Pregnancy seems to be a fantastic thing for her. Can’t wait to see the little one! Nicole is an adorable pregnant lady!!!

I’ve always had a soft spot for Nicole, and it has just grown since she got pregnant. I really think that this has grounded her so much, and has forced her to grow up in so many ways and become a better person. Not to mention she is the CUTEST pregnant girl I have ever seen!
I feel like such a dork about it, but I so so so cannot wait to see the baby, and what they name him or her! I kind of hope that she is having a girl, but I have a feeling it is going to be a boy.

She looks amazing!!!! I really think she will be a good mom!

Dani, my husband ‘knew’ before I even thought of taking a home pregnancy test! He just noticed the change in me. Nicole is looking gorgeous and sounding so grown up these days

Dani and Tracey–
My husband knew also. He’s the one that told me all week before I took the test, “You’re pregnant. I just know it.” I didn’t wanna have my hopes up, so I didn’t think I was. Sure enough, I have a 21 month old baby boy upstairs asleep to prove that my husband was right and I was SO wrong.

Awww….thanks for sharing ladies!
I think that is so romantic that your husbands knew before you did, and that Joel knew before she did….to cute guys

Sorry to take away the “romance” of it all, but they did have unprotected sex a few weeks before so it could not have been a great surprise.
I have always liked Nicole and my daughter has always loved Joel. We are keeping an eye on this pregnancy around our house.

I was not a big Nicole fan before because her life just seemed so out of control and she just seemed so irresponsible. Now though I have to admit that I am impressed by how she has become more mature and grounded since becoming pregnant. She looks happy, calm and content. I’m very happy for her and Joel I wish them the best.
P.S. My husband knew with both our kids that I was pregnant before I did!!!

I like Nicole more and more lately! =)
One thing I don’t understand is her saying, “[Joel] has sleeves. I really think that they’re going to be embarrassed because he’s their dad, so I have a feeling that they just won’t get them. At least that’s what I hope.”
Why does she hope her kids won’t get tattoos when both Nicole and Joel have them? I never understand when people are inked up yet hate the idea of their child getting tattoos when they are adults. I have LOTS of tattoos and my kids LOVE them.
They wear fake tattoos all the time. I won’t have any problem with them getting tattoos as long as they are of legal age and paying for the tattoos themselves.
btw- I’m not trying to start something here; I’ve just noticed a few celebs saying stuff like that and I am curious as to why people feel that way.

Nicole,
For me, it’s that I see my children’s skin as perfect (except for a scar from chin stitches!), and I’d see a tattoo on them as marring perfection, although I see it as art on myself. I don’t really know how to explain why I feel that way any better than that, but I do.
I have four tattoos and don’t want my two sons to have any. I know it sounds crazy.

I have always liked her, and still do. Can’t wait to see what she has, and what she names it.

I think Nicole is going to be a great mom, I wish them all the best!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hope I am wrong, but I feel like this kid will eventually be handed over to a nanny. I really hope I am wrong thought since it does seem like she has calmed herself down and has become more focused.
Also, Keri, I have had unprotected sex countless times and never got pregnant [until three months ago haha], so…there is no way to “know” that someone is pregnant. Not even after having unprotected sex. In a way it is sweet that he felt it in his heart that she was pregnant, at least he didn’t freak out and “ruin” that special moment. When I told my fiance that I was pregnant he was so shocked and scared [as was I] that it didn’t leave room for either of us to really feel happy about it initially.
