Update: Surprise! The royal couple welcomed a 6 lbs, 2 oz son at 4:20 pm Monday in Surrey. No name has been chosen as of yet.

Originally posted 10:30 am: After undergoing an emergency C-section with the birth of Lady Louise Windsor, 4, Sophie, Countess of Wessex, has opted for a repeat C-section with her second child, due Christmas day.  The 42-year-old wife of Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex will deliver their baby — whose sex is not known — on Friday Dec. 21 and will remain in the hospital until Christmas Eve.  After she is discharged, the family intends to spend the holidays at their home in Bagshot Park.

According to London’s Daily Mail, Sophie experienced extreme blood loss following a placental abruption with Louise, which necessitated her premature delivery.  The Queen, who was said to have been "horrified" by what Sophie experienced during the birth, reportedly will visit her daughter-in-law and new grandchild sometime after Christmas.

  1. Sarah Says:

    He’s Wessex not Essex

  2. nicola Says:

the BBC have just announced that the Countess gave birth today, by c-section – to a boy. No other details released as yet!

  3. Rachel Says:

She had the baby today…. A BABY BOY! 6 lbs 10 oz…. same hospital she was in when she had Louise….

  4. Emeline Says:

Apparently, the baby boy first name would be Severn. To be confirmed however.

  5. Emeline Says:

sorry for bad news. Vicomt Severn is a title.

  6. annie Says:

Viscount Severn will be the little man’s title if his parents choose for him to carry a title. They declined for Louise to be known as Princess Louise. She is “just” Lady Louise Windsor in contrast to Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie.

  7. Hannah Says:

why does Louise have a “Lady” title and not princess? Prince Andrew’s kids are princess.

  8. madison Says:

I believe Louise’s title of Lady instead of Princess was her parents’ choice (sophie and edward) Just as Princess Anne chose not to give her two children titles at all. I read somewhere that in that case, Princess Anne chose for her children to just have regular first and last names, no titles – to try to give them a sense of normalcy.

  9. Jennifer Says:

    From wikipedia:

    Titles and styles
    * 8 November 2003 –: The Lady Louise Windsor
o Legally: Her Royal Highness Princess Louise of Wessex

As a granddaughter of the monarch in the male line, she is legally Her Royal Highness Princess Louise of Wessex, not Lady Louise Windsor, and, when she comes of age, she may legally use the title Princess Louise, if she wishes.[5] However, when her parents married, they decided that their children would be styled as the children of an earl rather than as princes or princesses with the style Royal Highness. This was intended to reduce the burden of royal titles and the responsibility that comes with them. In the absence of letters patent, Lady Louise legally remains a Princess of the United Kingdom, regardless of how she is styled.

Although her last name is Mountbatten-Windsor she is styled only using the surname Windsor

  10. Hillary Says:

Since the little guy was born close to George VI’s birthday (Dec. 14), my guess is he will have either Albert or George in his name.

George VI was the Queen’s father and he was dearly loved.

My other guesses, Edward, Philip and Christopher for Sophie’s dad.

  11. Michelle Says:

Royals usually give the baby 4 names, so my guess would be Philip Christopher Edward George.

I picked Philip since Edward will take over the title of Duke of Edinburg from his father one day.
