Update: Gabrielle Reece and Laird Hamilton welcome daughter Brody Jo
Update: The couple actually had a daughter named Brody Jo, not a son. People.com originally released incorrect information, but have since re-written their article.
Originally posted January 2nd: Surfer Laird Hamilton, 43, and volleyball player wife Gabrielle Reece, 37, welcomed their second child together — a New Year’s baby — on Tuesday, January 1st in Hawaii. Brody Jo Hamilton weighed in at 8 lbs, 2 oz, and joins older sisters Reece Viola, 4, and Izabella, 12, Laird’s daughter from his first marriage.
Gabrielle had announced the pregnancy in June, saying that her due date was January 2nd. Laird revealed that they do not find out the sex of their children prior to delivery, because,
It’s probably the single greatest surprise we have in our lives, and to find out early for whatever reason — justifying the color of a bedroom or something — to me is kind of lame.
Nonetheless, Brody had her name chosen back in August — Laird mentioned at the time how much Gabby liked the name. While she was expecting, Gabby posed for the December issue of Pregnancy.

Congrats….but people don’t find out the sex only to paint a room. For me, I would need to find out the sex as I have early babies and preemie girls do WAY better in the NICU and have higher survival rates than preemie boys. Just wanted to point out there are other reasons to find out the sex too

Awww!!A New Years baby, the first celebrity baby birth of the year 2008. I love the name they chose.Hopefully we get a chance to see the little guy. Congrationlations to Reece-”Hamilton” family. Hope everyone is doing fine.

Oooo I love the name Brody! And I agree with them: I wouldn’t want to find out the sex either (although I recognize there are lots of reasons ppl choose to find out beforehand).
Not really related, but whatever happened with Poppy Montgomery? Has she announced anything yet?
Sarah’s note: She has had the baby, but is waiting to announce the birth when she’s ready, so we’re respecting that.

Nice surfie name. Suits the family well.
But I have to ask- Taurus2008- I think I’ve missed your point- you would find out the sex so IF the baby came early you’d know if they’d die??Please tell me i misunderstood.

Congrats to the family.

How sweet! What cool names they give their children: not too popular and not too strange.

Congrats to the family, I love this couple!
I think it’s a personal choice: if parents want to know the sex of their child before delivery, so be it, if they wait, that’s great too. Isn’t it a surprise either way?
My husband and I chose to wait until the birth to find out the gender of our baby, but if I have another child, I think this time I would like to know during pregnancy.

Brody Jo is not a son for the pair, but a daughter.

All the other information posted is correct, except the sex!
Sarah’s note: Yup, because People.com actually screwed up last night, but instead of updating, they just re-wrote the article.
A boy is what they had originally posted and what we got from them. We updated our post with the correct info this morning, but because they just re-did their article completely instead of retracting and updating, it looks like we were wrong (which we were, but so were they). It sounds like the rep only gave them the name and weight, and they assumed it was a boy, and everyone had an ass made out of themselves.

People Magazine is reporting that Brody Jo is a girl – not a boy. Hmmmm…..
January 3rd, 2008 at 12:48 pm
So People is saying that the baby is a girl??? A girl named Brody??? I’m so confused…
I do like Brody as a son’s name for them. It fits their family.

Aww it’s a girl, and Laird was so right.I still love the name!! Love this family and really hope we’ll get chance to see her soon. Thank CBB!! Any info on her “HEIGHT”.

Laird called that one — he said he thought they’d have another girl.

I have to agree with the notion that it’s a surprise either way – just depends on when you want to know!! Personally, I would have found out on Day 1 if I could have!!!
Congrats – I like the name much better for a girl!

I was wondering…because of the spelling of Jo. Congratulations to them.

When I saw Jo instead of Joe, I wondered if it wasn’t a girl rather than a boy.

When she announced her pregnancy I had a feeling it was another girl. Congrats to them. As for finding out the sex, I personally like to know. I’m not a patient person and I like to have the room and baby stuff picked out, and it’s easier for a baby shower, instead of just having to buy green or yellow IMO.

Ahh, the “Jo” makes much more sense now. I still love it for a girl! Very chic and cool.
January 3rd, 2008 at 5:14 pm
Congrats! I’m sure the little girl is a joy to Laird, Gabrielle, and big sister Reece!! Although I personally think Brody fits more for a boy, I think it’s ok for a girl. Hope to see pics soon.

I think it is very emotional when you find out the sex of your babe, whether it is during pregnancy or after. It is always a surprise to see what the baby looks like, so the surprise element is still always there.
Regardless, congrats to them, hope she is happy and healthy!!

Sorry I was a little unclear – I can see how you got that from my post. I can go into a little more detail here. My son was born at 23 weeks and lived for 2 days in the NICU. He died due to extreme prematurity. I have a friend where the same thing happened with her, son born at 25 wks, passed away the same day (due to extreme prematurity). She went on to have a baby girl, born under the same circumstances (25 wks), and she lived. While my son was alive, I was told repeatedly the survival rates were so much better for girls than boys and that if only my son were a girl, his chances would have shot up dramatically. So I guess for me, the reason I would want to find out the sex is to prepare myself for the NICU battle ahead. I know all children are different and just b/c a child is a girl and not a boy does not guarantee survival, but TO ME, I would be better prepared for what lies ahead. I don’t see it as preparing for the eventual death of my child, rather preparing for what possible struggles I may face. Hope this helps to clarify my original statement

Yeah, now the “Jo” makes more sense but I still think of Brody as all boy.
Congrats to them.

I just have to laugh at the mixup. I missed it all and heard about her daughter on E!’s Top Ten.
But congrats to her and Laird on their new little girl.
I think the name is cute…probably just as cute as Brody Jo is.
