Nancy Grace on her ‘twin miracles’
CNN Headline News anchor Nancy Grace, 48, welcomed her long-awaited twins, John David and Lucy Elizabeth, by emergency c-section on November 4th. The babies are now 9-weeks old, home from the hospital and doing well. In this week’s issue of People, Nancy tells her story in her own words.
Click below for the interview and photos.
After losing my fiancé [Keith Griffin, who was murdered in 1979] theway I did, I never thought love and marriage, much less havingchildren, would happen to me.
I met David [Linch, 49, an investment banker] after Keith died. We’dmaintained a long-distance relationship over the years. Last April Isaid, ‘Let’s do it.’ He said, ‘What?’ I said, ‘Get married — thisweekend.’
I always wanted a family. I was 47 when I got pregnant. I’d been trying for a couple of years and thought it would never happen.
Initially, I didn’t know I was carrying twins. Then I went in for aroutine ultrasound and there were two heartbeats. They were referred toas Baby A and Baby B. Early on I was told I had lost Baby B, thatsomehow I had miscarried. The doctors referred to this as the ‘disappearing twin phenomenon. Several weeks later, they found a second heartbeat; the twin was back.
Soon after, a doctor told me my cervix was too short to carry twinsfull term. She said, ‘You will have to consider selective termination.’I freaked out. I sat up in my paper gown and said, ‘No way! I am notaborting one of the twins!’ I was referred to a specialist and, sureenough, the cervix was perfect.
In August I was having horrible abdominal pains and trouble breathing. My feet were so swollen I could only wear flip-flops.
On November 4th David took me to Northside Hospital in Atlanta because I couldn’t breathe. The doctor said, ‘You’ve got pulmonary edema.’ My lungs had been filling up with water.
Ninety minutes later the twins arrived by emergency c-section. Lucywas breech and weighed 2 lbs, 15 oz; John David was 5 lbs, 1 oz. A weeklater I had to go back to the ER because I had blood clots in my lungs. Now I’m on long-term blood thinners.
Before I had the babies, I never really let myself love 100%. Lucyand John David have changed all that. There’s no way I can’t love them200%. I can’t imagine the world without them.

I don’t know much about Nancy Grace, but it’s always encouraging to hear about people who become parents later in life. I feel like I’m at a prime physical age to have kids, but I’m definitely not in the right situation. I don’t know when I will be, so I have to hope that it can still happen when I *am* ready.
Does Nancy really call her daughter “Lucky,” or is that a type-o (3rd to last sentence in the interview)? “Lucky” would certainly be appropriate.
Sarah’s note: Typo.
Thanks.

I simply adore Nancy and I cannot wait for her return on Monday! I know she will be gushing all about the twins and I am so excited! Lucy and John are gorgeous and Nancy and David seem absolutely head over heels in love with them–it’s so nice to see Nancy get everything that she deserves–she’s been through a lot and to now have the love of her life and her babies she’s wanted for so long…I am so happy for her! Can’t wait to see more of Lucy and John! CONGRATS to Nancy and David!

Its wonderful that Nancy has the family that she has longed for many years. The look of contentment and joy on her face is priceless. As well as the sweet faces of her young children.

I can’t say I care for Nancy all too much, but I’m glad her babies are ok.

How wonderful for nancy, she was blessed with 2 babies. She seems so happy, good for her

It’s lovely to see that she has had two beautiful babies, but I really find it hard to swallow these stories of celeb mums falling pregnant in their late 40s. Who knows, maybe this woman was extremely lucky, but my gynecologist told me that most celebrity women who have babies in their mid to late forties use egg donors. Obviously I’ve no idea if this was the situation here…
In any case, her babies look gorgeous, and I’m glad they were born healthy.

While I’m thrilled for Nancy, I have to say that at her age, the chances of conceiving twins naturally are very, very slim. Almost nonexistent, in fact. I wish celebrities who use ART would actually talk about how they’ve used ART, rather than glossing it over and pretending that someone who’s over 45 can just get pregnant whenever they feel like it.

Nancy Grace is wonderful, for some reason i have always liked her even though she can be mean on the show sometimes,.I guess when you have been through tragedies you “toughen” up. Ever since her pregancy, I have seen her “soften” up and it’s nice to see through to the real Nancy which seems to be a very caring and loving person. Go Nancy-can’t wait to see your show on MOnday!…..May God Bless your beautiful family.

Nancy always seemed so tough, I know being a mother will soften her and help her relate more to her stories. I wouldn’t be surprised if she stars bawling in the middle of a story because of all the mom hormones flowing through her bod!

I’ve seen a lot of photos of these babies and they are only 2 months old! She seems to take every opportunity she can to be in the media.

Nancy — I was in tears tonight seeing the twins. Thank you so much for introducing them to us. I am so happy for you. I have had a very close family member murdered, so I know what you mean about not allowing yourself to love 100%.
I am so thankful that you have John David and Lucy Elizabeth to teach you about love again!
BTW they are ADORABLE!!! (Do you need a nanny?)

Nancy, you are a true inspiration. I love your up front honesty. You are going to be a fantastic mom. John David and Lucy Elizabeth are so lucky to be blessed to have you as their mother as you are blessed to have them as your children. Congratulations David and Nancy.

Yes, it is virtually 100% certain that Nancy must have had fertiliy treatment so why won’t she be upfront about it?
January 12th, 2008 at 6:29 pm
I am very happy for you and David. The children are beautiful. Also glad they are healthy. My husband is a twin and they also were 7 mo babies but turned out to be a-okay.
As far as fertility treatment that is NO ONE’S BUSINESS.
Good Luck.

interesting story, I am 48 years old with a 36 year old fiance and I presently have a 10 year old daughter. just over two years ago i suffered a severe pulmonary embolism in intensive care for a month and i am on long term blood thinners and a heart pill, I gained a lot of weight due to being inactive as a result of the broken leg and ankle, which caused my blood clots that went into my lungs causing a saddle embolus. I am wanting to have another child but I know its hard to even contemplate due to my serious health issues but as we are all guilty off, I wish I could erase what happened to me so I could have a second chance at motherhood with my fiance however I know he would never want me to do anything to risk my health and thats the true sign of love when we realize that our dreams are put on hold for necessity rather than to live in a fantasy shame at times life hands us these cards we just have to play them the way we can

Beatrice: The fact is, the older a woman is, the more likely she is to have multiples! If you do a search online, you’ll find that I’m right. Here’s something that I found online: “Older mothers are more likely to conceive twins than their younger counterparts. It’s thought that the body accelerates ovulation as the biological clock starts ticking faster. Seventeen percent of mothers over age 45 have multiples. Wait five more years and the odds rise to one in nine!”
