Rumor: French President Nicolas Sarkozy and Carla Bruni expecting?

Rumors are swirling that French President Nicolas Sarkozy, 52, and his girlfriend, singer and former supermodel Carla Bruni, 40, are expecting.

Nicolas, who divorced his ex-wife Cecilia in October, began dating Carla in November when they met at a party.  They are also rumored to be married on February 9th.

Cecilia, who has previously stated that Nicolas does not even like his own children, is highly upset at these reports of a pregnancy.

If true, this will be Carla’s second child.  She has a son, Aurelien Enthoven, from a previous relationship. This will be Nicolas fourth child.  He has two sons — Pierre, 22, and Jean, 20 — with ex-wife Marie-Dominique Culioli, and one son — Louis, 10, with Cecilia.

Nicolas was elected President of France this past May.

French readers: What does this mean for France? Is it as scandalous as it would be in the United States?

American readers: What would you think if this happpened in the United States? If one of our presidents not only divorced his wife shortly after being elected but also started dating a former supermodel and had a baby with her immediately?

  1. tine Says:

I’m not sure what you mean, what’s the scandal about it?

Sarah’s note: I don’t know, I haven’t followed the news, but Danielle wanted the questions posted because she said it was scandalous?

  2. Elizabeth Says:

I’m American and I wouldn’t be too impressed if our president did this. I could care less what the French president does, though.

  3. Jo Ann v. Says:

He was actually elected in May.

And I am shocked I even have to read about him in here. The media is covering every single step of this relationship (fake or not ?) since December and it’s pretty annoying. He lost 7 points in popularity and is under 50%. They talk more about his private life than his work…
It’s the first time a French president divorces (while on duty, don’t know about other divorces)…

  4. brannon Says:

Sorry – too difficult to imagine Bush in a scandalous love affair :) yuck.

  5. Luciana (Brazil) Says:

I don’t understand either.. They’re dating, and she’s pregnant. That happens A LOT, doesn’t it??
What’s the big deal? He’s a president, not the Pope.

I don’t think she is pregnant, but if she is, Congratulations to the couple!!!

  6. Nineveh Says:

I thought this was already exposed to be a hoax?

  7. Beverley Says:

Well I can remember a sex scandal involving our American president just a few years back and his presidency suffered and his legacy won’t be the same.
As for the unmarried part, since most of the celebrity babies conceived out there are to unmarried couples, I don’t think it will make a difference, although I would like it better if they got married. But I do not live in France.

  8. chatty cricket Says:

Oh I would have a big problem if our President EVER pulled something like this. It just smacks of loose morals so soon after a separation.

    Boo hiss.

  9. Minx Says:

Actually, Francois Mitterrand (former French president) had a long-term affair that produced a daughter (Mazarine, if I’m not mistaken) and both the mistress and the daughter had an apartment at the Elysee palace (the official home of French presidents) and walked behind Mitterrand’s coffin at his state funeral. Mitterrand’s wife (with whom he had several sons) knew about the affair and the French, once they found out, were very understanding. Danielle Mitterrand even reached out to the girl after her father’s death. Unlike puritanical Americans, the French in general are much more concerned about what the president does in the office than what he does after hours. Mitterrand was very well respected, even revered, during his life and after the affair was discovered. Personally, I find the Sarkozy/Bruni affair a bit ridiculous, but if he runs the country right, I don’t care what he does outside of the office. He’s not breaking any laws. Unlike statesmen who preach puritanical values and chase after pageboys or solicit gay sex in public bathrooms.

  10. brannon Says:

I’d much rather he date her publicly than have an affair while still married. And if our President was in this situation – sorry, still can’t picture Bush – I wouldn’t care as long as he was doing his job. Presidents are still human.( And he is divorced.)

  11. terri Says:

Americans expect a much diferent standard for their politicians than for Hollywood celebrities. It would be scandalous, I don’t doubt that.

  12. Jo Ann v. Says:

Minx, I agree with you, but in Mitterand’s case, people found out pretty late. In his last years (or months) of life ?
    It’s his private life and we shouldn’t give a d* ;-) , but seriously… it’s tiring.
    Don’t you think ?

  13. Sarita Says:

I do think it is strange that he didn’t divorce until after he was elected. As if he was afraid he wouldn’t be elected as a bachelor.

Other than this, I always think it’s not very smart to have a child with someone you are only just getting to know.

  14. lis Says:

I think people are finding it scandalous because 1) it is *so* soon after divorcing 2) they aren’t very long into the relationship and 3) the reports that he doesn’t like his children he already has (or however you want to word that one).

I must admit I find it really sad that there are comments that say it’s fine if the French president does it, but if the American president (Bush or any hypothetical president) did, it’d be very bad… Uneven standards, really.

I *have* to agree with the comment that as long as he’s doing his JOB, as President, to the best of his ability, and any personal matters aren’t playing into his ability to perform his job.. I really don’t care at all.

  15. nani Says:

I also dont see any scandal about the news. It would be if he was still married with the wife. But they are not together anymore, I dont see any scandal about it. I live in South America. I think here would not be anything to call attention either because we dont put many expectation in our politicians as if he will never make a mistake. I can see some jokes but only this.

  16. Ivey Says:

Oh Minx I so agree with you!!

I’m so sick of politicians in America trying to get into office because they are on the ‘moral’ ticket.

I’d much prefer someone that could solve some of our countless serious problems, I could care less whom they are screwing.

But in answer to the question, it would be on CNN every 5minutes and we would never hear the end of it.

  17. PSB Says:

    I agree with lis.

I think the part that’s so unseemly is that he JUST got a divorced and JUST met this woman. It seems pretty crazy for a man of his age and position to get so carried away and impulsive. Most people would be a little more discreet in the beginning, for the sake of their children’s feelings.

I don’t think it’s the fact that he’s divorced or getting married to a new woman (John Kerry was divorced and it didn’t seem to affect his campaign much), it’s the way in which he’s carrying on, with so little regard for the feelings of his family. He kind of comes across as kind of a baffoon to me. I’d be irritated if the US president did this, the same way I’d be irritated if somebody I knew or some celebrity I liked did this.

However, if he does a good job running the country…it matters a lot less. It’s easier to overlook bad personal qualities in good leader. After all, I LOVED Bill Clinton and still do!

  18. Émilie Says:

I don’t see why it would be a scandal…? He is divorced, so it’s definitely not an affair.

If you talk about having a child out of wedlock, marriage is sooooooooo not important in France, but I know from what I read here, it is still very important for American women.

  19. nm Says:

of course it is scandalous. he’s newly divorced, and has been dating carla for less than 6 months. he’s the president for goodness sakes, he should be focusing on his responsibilities to the people that elected him (which he has apparently been notably distracted from) rather than trying to bring his girlfriend along on official state visits and showing up on the cover of dozens of gossip magazines for his extracurricular activities. not to mention that he has other children to think about, for whom i imagine this can’t be an easy thing to deal with. it just seems that he should handle his personal life with a little more discretion.

  20. ma74 Says:

I agree with Minx.French presidents have often had affairs or kids outside their marriage. It has never really caused any problems.I don’t care.Just because they are presidents doesn’t make them any different from other men. What matters are their policies.
I don’t like having Sarkozy as a president but I personally don’t care about his private love life.I just don’t like the fact that their relationship absolutely everywhere in the media and he doesn’t seem to mind. There are more important things than that

  21. Lynn Says:

I’m an American and I will be the first to admit that Americans in general LOVE to judge people and place their own value systems on others. It drives me nuts. If this was happening in America, a certain segment of the population would be screaming for impeachment.

It’s really too bad because a President’s private affairs have no affect on anyone other than his family. Why do we care what he does as long as we have a solid paycheck in our pocket, we can pay our mortgage, put food on the table, live in peace and claim our freedoms as citizens as guaranteed in the Constitution. Our current President has a solid marriage, but the majority of us can’t say we enjoy any of the above anymore.

That said, I hope the French press lays off because it sounds like, similar to America, the press is more into reporting gossip and less into reporting the issues. Hey, we have a presidential election going on here, and I can barely tell you where anyone stands on the issues (and I’ve paid attention)!

  22. Sarah Says:

His ex-wife’s name is “Cecilia”, and his son is “Louis” …

I personally don’t mind about his love life. He just doesn’t keep enough privacy I think. Anyway, before being president he’s a man with a private life and there’s nothing shocking about him having a relationship or getting married. I just think he’s a little bit old to become a father again, but he’s not the oldest one …

I think we should stop judging … Why would it be more upsetting him to get married or having a baby on the way than JL Spears pregnant at 16 ? These are their lives … Whatever …

  23. Laura Says:

I am French, and one of the main reasons that this comes off as such a scandal is because here, Carl Bruni is viewed as being the country’s “mattress”.
She has been linked with a ton of older, influential men, and she is most infamous for having dated a much older guy, then dumping him for his son, who was married at the time, and having a child with the son!!!
I think that the most scandalous part of the story for French people is Carla Bruni’s past, and the idea that Sarkozy could just be another one of her “rice older men conquests”.
For my part, I think that the way that he runs the country is much more important than what he does outside, and do not think that his having a child outside of wedlock is shocking. What is a little more shocking is that he did it so soon, and with a woman who has a pretty tarnished reputation.

  24. Renee Says:

I have no issues with pre-marital sex or people having babies while not married but I do wonder about those who have children with someone who they haven’t been with for a long time.Really, can’t rich people afford condoms and birth control?

  25. Marina Says:

I’m french and I don’t think that SOO scandalous that our president have a life !!!
Our past president (Chirac) had an affair and had a baby with another woman. THAT was scandalous. But Nicolas sarkozy is not hidding his relationsheep and he is not married so…
What the matter ???? I don’t understand why this is such a big deal for french people.
Sarkozy is a man, and Carla Bruni is beautifull.
I think he is right. Like someone said, he is not the pope !!!!

  26. Petra Says:

If it is true, so he doesn´t really waste time! It is a bit quick, but Mr. Sarkozy is a divorced man, so it is only his business.
As far as I know, it was Cecilia, who divorced him, so I don´t understand, why she is now so upset about the matter. It is not her business anymore. Maybe sour grapes for former Mrs. Sarkozy?

  27. noa Says:

Sarkozy is a manipulator. A media manipulator!
In his troll mind he believes that all it takes to convince the french that he’s doing a good job is controlling the media. Headlining stories he feels the populace will be interested in to divert their attention from what he’s NOT doing – just like his divorce making the headlines smack in the middle of the strikes. (Let’s not forget, almost all the big media bosses in France are his friends… nothing gets out that isn’t wanted or controlled these days)
Then he’ll check out national surveys, see what the people are expecting… address it in a speech…and probably get married or something or even better get Ingrid Betancourt released (just like the nurses in Libya, he uses sensitive issues as ad campaigns).
I’m disgusted with the lack of class this president has and the public exposure of his personal life he willingly dishes out to deviate attention off serious issues.

  28. Sara Says:

Like Mitterand (French president in the eighties) said, when asked if he had an illegitimite child: “Et alors?”

    “So what?”

    Sara
(From Belgium, the small country next to the big France)

  29. Aleah Says:

I’ll go with my French compatriots, no one really cares here that Sarkozy be dating Carla Bruni. actually, my boss happens to be an acquataince of Carla Bruni (learnt that yesterday) and let’s just say that she doesn’t have nice things to say about Miss Bruni, especially when it comes to her relationships with men.

As for the pregnancy rumour, I checked French news sites but found nothing about it. And if turned out to be true, I’ll go with the other Europeans, so what? François Mitterand had an illegitimate daughter, Mazarine, and everyone knew about her. It never really was a scandal.

  30. Alice Says:

I’m a French reader, and I think, if it’s true! That’s not so scandalous. It’s happens to a lot of people, and we talk about this just because Mister sarkozy is French president!
Before to be French President, Mr Sarkozy is a man! Leave him living his life!

Like our former president, François Mitterand said, ” Et alors?” ” So what?”

  31. Alice Says:

I’m french as well and even if it’s true that he’s divorced and he does what he wants with his personal life, the problem is that… he’s on CBB. What I mean is he’s behaving more like a celebrity, movie star or else, than a president. He’s been in tabloids non stop since he was elected, parties, divorce, new girlfriend… he could and should have kept it more private.

  32. Kildine Says:

The thing is that he is NOT doing his job ! He is not a President, but a movie star or a rock star or whatever …. he fools people and takes their money to travel and be on vacations with a woman who is just looking for power (she is a man-eater and very opportunist : actually, what a good match)

He is only interested in being on TV or in people magazines ! when you turn your TV on what do you see ? him, him … him .. and him again and him talking about her !

Actually, the word “scandalous” is a bit too strong to qualify this “love-story” for our President … but boring would be good !!!!! this is BORING to see that the media only care about this instead of being worried about his way to lead our country ! there are problems in France, but Nicolas Sarkozy is more interested in being on vacations with Carla Bruni ….

  33. AnneSophie Says:

Im french. Let me tell you that this is not a rumor that i’ve heard in french magazines. A couple of days ago Sarkozy responded to rumors of a possible wedding with Carla Bruni: he said that it was serious between them but that if they were to get married then we won’t know until they actually do. I think a lot of people are fed up to hear so much about his life. The polls are not in favor of him right now. He’s just so different from the presidents we’re used to. But I think he’s a good president and he’s playing with the media that’s it!

  34. Lol Says:

I think the fact this is being asked shows this site is American, in Europe leaders are judged more on what they do for a country – national and international policies, rather than their love lives. How it should be in my opinion, lets face it, leaders can have the “perfect home life” and yet be pretty terrible leaders can’t they?

    I wish them well

  35. sushi Says:

Since, things are a little complicated in our country right now, our president has been trying to make all the bad things go away by
    lying;
In may, when he became president, he said that Cecilia was still his wife and that they were in love… however the couple divorced during the fall, just when Ingrid Betancourt’s family ( she’s half french and she has been the prionner of the farc for 6 years) was asking to anwers and for help…. you can already see that Sarkozy wanted people to be focuced on his divorce and to think ” poor guy..he will not see his son much” rather than ” poor Ingrid Betancourt, it has been 6 years, and nothing..”
Then came Christmas, and time to buy the presents. People what really angry because everything is getting more and more expensive, thanks to Sarkozy. Ingrid Betancourt was still not home, while Sarkozy told her children that ” she will be home by her birthday ( december 26th). So, aigain, he tried to lie with this relationship with Carla Bruni who is well know for dating men, just for their money.. the “couple” was spotted in Disney world on a Sunday and by monday, everybody was talking about them.
Carla Bruni is just tring to sell her records, while he just want to be ” a star”.
Don’t believe those things, pity him. he’s pathetic and so is she.
Please, do not remove my mail, people need to realize on the other side of the ocean, that Politic is no longer what it was suposed to be in our country

  36. Gabbie Says:

I feel that American or French Presidents (I’m American) in this situation are ok as long as he is divorced BEFORE dating the new woman. If not divorced and having an affair, then that is a problem. Though, I agree with a the other reader who said, never a great idea to have a baby with someone you just met! IMO

  37. Chiara Says:

I just want to point out that the description of Carla Bruni as a “former supermodel” is not all-encompassing and perhaps demeaning; she is now a very well-known and respected (really) singer/songwriter in France and all of Europe really. A very odd case of a model turning to music and actually having some talent with it :)

  38. Ju Says:

I’m French, and i dont care if he gets married or if Carla is pregnant. His job is to govern our country, but he can do whatever he wants with his private life. I dont like how people get interrested in this story, he’s becoming some kind of “people” whose life is being judged by everydoby. But from what i heard, the whole baby thing is not true, it’s a new fantasy from foreign medias.

  39. Anon Says:

A persons personal life has nothing with their ability to do their job. It makes for great gossip but how does it impact his work? It may not be something i morally agree how is it anyone’s business but his?

  40. Celia Says:

I’m French, and to be honest i’m pretty comfused bu this story. Mostly because it seems so fake. I’m pretty sure she’s not pregnant, and I think this whole ‘love’ story is a bit weird. Sarkozy is clearly a manipulator (wheater you agree on his politics or not, you HAVE to agree on that) and this whole romance is really just weird. Presidents alwawys have mistresses but they usually trie to hide them. Sarkozy was just dumped by his wife, and I think he just needs to show a good image of himself at the moment.

( sorry for my terrible english, i hope you understand what i’m trying to say… :-)

  41. Ava Says:

First of all there is a reason that this is not on French gossip sites nor in French magazines. The reason is that the French press, unlike the American press, cannot pass off rumors as facts. The trashy magazines regularly get sued and lose for doing this.

A point about Carla Bruni, whoever called her France’s matress is right. She has a habit of bedding powerful and influental men. She has had relationships with Donald Trump and Mick Jagger among others.

Then about Sarkozy being divorced. I was under the impression that he decided to run for president but that his marriage was already over, they just decided to stay together until the eletion was over. If this is the case then while they have only been divored for a short while their marriage was over for a lot longer.

Finally, I think this is a load of rubbish. I don’t think that they are going to get married and I don’t think she is pregnant.

  42. CeeCee Says:

I am a French and I am happy to see that what has been previously said here is quite mature (both US and French comments) and information by the French readers perfectly accurate (except Marina, 12Jan 3.21am: our former president who had a baby in an extra-marital affair was not Mr Chirac but Mr Miterrand).

Everyone interested should read ALL the comments: you will have honest information, because each of them adds an interesting insight; it’s not common on gossip sites so I feel like it has to be said.
Thank you all for your contributions!

The pregnancy story is no more than a rumor so far; I just couldn’t help noticing it came out the day after a book written by a friend of Cecilia in which she bad-mouths her former husband was finally authorized although she sued to prevent the release.

As for the rest, and like for every celebrity, we should keep in mind we’re commenting on what is publicly known and not on the real and whole story or personality of the people involved…

The relationship seems to have started very quickly after the divorce, also he’s already thinking of getting married: the fact is it’s weird to many (no matter he is the president or everyman).
It was indeed known in some circles before it was made public and paparazzi were after them for weeks before they decide for making it public, but no journalist outed it because of our laws on privacy.
One more detail to recall is that his former wife Cecilia was the one to publicly cheat on him first, then dumped him; they tried to work it out and finally got divorced last October.

It’s indeed boring and confusing to have them on e-v-e-r-y French media, not only tabloïds but also news magazines and even women and fashion magazines but I guess it’s because she is a celebrity.
He sounded serious about the relationship and possible marriage; time will tell what happens next!
I just wish he keeps working -and does it successfully- while this media frenzy goes on.

  43. Marcellous L. Jones Says:

We are aware of some person’s discontent with TheFashionInsider.com’s decision to name the French President as the “Celebrity Bachelor of the Year 2008″. We are also aware of the rumors regarding his secret marriage to the former supermodel Carla Bruni and that they are expecting a baby together. Elysée was aware of our choice of President Sarkozy for this honor as early as the first days of December 2007 and assisted us in a limited manner to make sure that certain information to be included in the article was accurate. However, as Elysée had not made any official acknowledgement of such rumors, our magazine has no intention of changing its decision, and we firmly stand by it.

    Cordially,

    Marcellous L. JONES, Editor-in-Chief
