CBB Exclusive: Melissa Joan Hart’s pregnancy journal: Celebrity babies, Lake Tahoe, and baby names
Together with actress Melissa Joan Hart, 31, we bring you thenext installment of her pregnancy column. Many readers and fans had questions and commentsregarding names, the sex of the baby, pregnancyweight and what Melissa thinks of the celebrity baby craze. Here Melissa answers some of these questions, tells us about her holiday season — her ABC Christmas movie Holiday in Handcuffs topped ratings for the network — explains what’s up next with hubby Mark Wilkerson’s band Course of Nature, and shares new photos. Of course, there’s talk of son Mason Walter, who turned 2 this past Friday, and the new baby, expected to arrive the first week of March.
Melissa is now entering her 33rd week of pregnancy. Click below for the entry, including photos!
Since I’ve been getting a lot of similar baby questions recently, I’ve decided to do a blog to fill y’all in. We do know the sex of the new baby, however we are keeping it to ourselves for a while. I know we all have ‘M’ names right now, but that’s just a coincidence. The next baby will not have an ‘M’ name, since we are trying to avoid a theme. We do love the name Madeline, but no matter the sex of this baby, looks like I’ll have to wait and see if I have a few more kids before I can use that name. If the labor goes well this time, I’m hoping for two more babies later in my 30s.
As for the questions about Hollywood babies, I have mixed feelings.I would hope the public would be more interested in the level of talentthan the cuteness of the kids of celebs! But there is a big differencethese days between "stars" and "celebrities"; "stars" being people witha certain level of talent and responsibility. That being said, I also think my son is the most adorable boy in the world and everyone should experience the joy of that smile. But I don’t enjoy the paparazzi following us on walks to Baja Fresh!
But mostly I don’t appreciate it when the public believes everythingthey see or read. Especially being pregnant, I’ve seen lots of commentsabout my weight, but I’m pregnant and very few women in the world lookskinny while expecting. It’s the one time absolutely no one should judge!

I was eating really healthy the first 20 weeks of this pregnancy, butsince Halloween I’ve been eating way too many sweets! Maybe now thatthe holidays are over I can get a hold of the sweet tooth and try toget more veggies in. This pregnancy is definitely easier than my first, but I think that is mainly due to chasing around Mason. I don’t have time to obsess over every little feeling or pain.
Here are some pictures for you — hope you enjoy them!! The ice skating one is from a Winter Wonderland party that ABC family threw for all their movies in the 25 Days of Christmas. My movie Holiday In Handcuffs topped all ratings for the network and we were very excited. But it was such fun to spend a day at Rockefeller Center where we had the ice rink to ourselves for a short time. Mason got to ice skate for the first time, but only made it around twice before he was worn out!
We had Christmas dinner at our house, which was nuts since I don’t cook all year round, but somehow think I can manage a big traditional meal for 16. It turned out great, but lots of pressure and a day on my feet. Then we took off to our favorite place in the world, Lake Tahoe, for a very snowy New Years — actually, Mark and I flew to NYC for the New Year’s Eve night so that Course of Nature could perform in Times Square for Fox News Channel, but we had most of our families up in Tahoe playing in the snow for 8 days.
Now we have planned Mason’s second birthday (we went to Disneyland) and are trying to get some quiet time before the new little one pops. I think the baby is trying to get out through my skin. Strong little baby kicks VERY hard!
Oh and next up, Mark’s album is released Jan 29th, so we have tons of press ahead and a big party in Vegas! Woohoo!
Happy New Year!

I think Mason and Madeline are really cute together – but I think she’s having another boy! I never noticed until that black and white how much Mason and my son look alike.
Cute!

I just love how NORMAL she is. It can’t be easy, trying to stay grounded in an industry that is widely reknowned for being superficial and overly critical. Kudos to the Wilkersons! Love ‘em.
January 14th, 2008 at 11:10 am
Love her. She is realistic and charming and just so cute about the whole thing. Mason is the sweetest little boy ever. What a handsome young man he is turning into! Best of luck to the M’s!
January 14th, 2008 at 11:16 am
I never noticed that they all have M names! I think it would be really cute to have another M in the family. Madeline is an adorable name.
January 14th, 2008 at 11:39 am
did she just give away the sex of the baby by saying she loves the name Madeline but that it looks like she isn’t going to be using it this time? I didn’t quite understand that whole mention of the name Madeline, but I thought it seemed like she was saying she was having another boy.
Sarah’s note: No, she’s being very careful not to reveal the sex. She said that no matter what the sex is, she’s not using Madeline this time, although they love it, because they do not want an M theme. She and Mark will likely use it if they do have another two babies, and one is a girl.

She looks so beautiful pregnant. She really seems to enjoy being pregnant and embraces it. I agree with Jamie, she is SO normal and that is what is so great about her! Mason is so handsome, I hope she does make 2 more after this one. What a beautiful family!
January 14th, 2008 at 12:12 pm
It did seem like she gave it away, but it seemed like she was hinting that they’re having a girl, otherwise, why mention the name Madeline, which is a girl’s name. I guess I just don’t get it. LOL They’re a cute family and I wish them the best!
January 14th, 2008 at 12:16 pm
I forgot to mention that I’m with her on the thing about not wanting a theme. When I was pregnant with my son, one of the reasons I DID NOT want to name him after my husband was then our names would have been Kendra, Ken, and Kenny. People would have thought we were FREAKS! LOL
January 14th, 2008 at 12:25 pm
I also took the Madeline comment as a hint that she’s having a girl. I guess we’ll know in a few weeks! I am actually enjoying all these celebs making us wait, it makes it sort of fun.
January 14th, 2008 at 12:29 pm
I love MJH. I think she is beautiful and a great actress, Mason is one of the cutest babies I have ever seen. And the family just looks beautiful, I wish her the best of luck with this pregnancy, and the future.
January 14th, 2008 at 12:33 pm
She seems so sweet! They are such a cute family. That’s terrible that people are talking about her weight. She is pregnant, that is not a time to be concerned about your weight. Mason is just adorable. I love reading her journal, it’s nice that she shares with everyone.
January 14th, 2008 at 1:01 pm
I also thought or had a slight idea that she was having a girl too since it did seem like she was giving it away by saying we like the name Madeline. I guess we have to wait and find out!
January 14th, 2008 at 1:20 pm
I also think she’s having a boy! I can’t believe people are commenting on her weight. I believe that Mason was on the larger side (over 9lbs if I remember correctly). When you have a bigger baby you usually gain more weight. I’m petite pre-pregnancy and I gained 40lbs with both even though I ate healthier the first time. They were both close to 9lbs. She’s beautiful no matter what her weight!
January 14th, 2008 at 1:29 pm
I took it that she mentioned the name Madeline more in the response to M themed names, I didn’t read anything into it one way or the other. However I do remember reading comments (and I mean mentioning it at ALL) about her weight and it made me cringe. To make a reference to swelling due to water retention is one thing, but to mention weight in any other context other than to say that maybe someone looks as if they gained NO extra weight, is critical, hurtful, and simply unnecessary. JMO. She looks so sweet pregnant and I never really noticed how large her gorgeous husband is! The pics of Mason are so lovely, he is a very pretty little boy. Not sure if his mom and dad would appreciate me using the word “pretty”!! How exciting that we can look forward to the possibility of 2 more baby Wilkersons after this little one comes…. as I just know she will have a healthy delivery! And Susan, I agree, she is charming… perfect description.
January 14th, 2008 at 1:48 pm
I agree with Campbell 100% I never thought anything like she seemed to be hinting. She was just mentioning a name. I did always notice how big Mark is though lol.
January 14th, 2008 at 2:25 pm
I love all the photos, but that one of a bundled up, snow-covered Mason is just too sweet!
And it sounds like this pregnancy is going easy for her, which is always nice to read/hear about!
January 14th, 2008 at 3:55 pm
She wears pregnancy so well for being petite. I’m going to guess they are having a girl, but I can’t wait to find out.
January 14th, 2008 at 4:37 pm
she is right about Masons smile, it is so cute. Its going to be his tool of charm when he is older!!
January 14th, 2008 at 5:12 pm
i would be really surprised if they had a girl. she looks all boy to me. for some reason, i can’t ever see her having a girl…but i would love to be proven wrong!!
January 14th, 2008 at 5:13 pm
I actually think she mentioned the name Madeline to throw us off, and I think she is having another boy. Mason is cute, he looks just like his dad.
January 14th, 2008 at 5:20 pm
We too at Babylicious had a superb weekend at the Boom Boom room while dozens of stars scooped up hip, fresh babylicious swag! Mr. Big, Chris Noth, Ming Na, Joley Fisher, Carnie Wilson, and many more! We’d be thrilled to send you photos! Thanks
January 14th, 2008 at 5:27 pm
Melissa is big but that’s because her babies are big!! indeed all a pregnant woman doesn’t need is someone saying she’s fat… I’m glad that she and some others (like Nicole Richie) are choosing natural births… even Melissa who had a difficult one still prefers it… many people just don’t know the risks of a c-section… I admire her courage… Congratulations for the new baby Melissa!!
January 14th, 2008 at 5:37 pm
my god, she’s 31. where have i been? she is still clarissa in my head LOL. gorgeous post & photos =)
January 14th, 2008 at 7:52 pm
Gorgeous photos, can’t believe she is 33 weeks already! I had my son at 33 weeks so it could happen anytime soon for her!
January 14th, 2008 at 8:24 pm
She’s so cute pregnant – it doesn’t look to me like she’s gained too much weight. And Mason is adorable. I think she’s having a boy (just a hunch).
January 14th, 2008 at 10:39 pm
what a beautiful family!
since i was a little girl she has been my favorite actress and i’m so happy that she has remained “normal” and has not given in to the pressures of Hollywood
congrats on the new little one!
January 14th, 2008 at 10:45 pm
Melissa should really keep up with the M’s…because then the others will be left out! haha. I’m kinda serious though. Madeline is soo cute for a girl, I would definitely go with that. A boy would be…Michael for me.
Mason and Michael…Mason and Madeline…so cute!
January 14th, 2008 at 10:54 pm
I’m just wondering. Since a pregnancy is only 40 weeks, that means she only has around 7 weeks to tell the sex of the baby…Or is she just going to wait until he/she is born? Either way, I’m happy for her!!
Sarah’s note: Not sure — last fall she had told us they were going to share when the promotion for Mark’s album comes out, which is end of January. But then she said they decided to keep it private. I’m not sure what the final decision was.
January 15th, 2008 at 8:16 am
Aw! Such a cute family!
January 15th, 2008 at 8:43 am
Well everyone else already said how much they love her, and I don’t want to be repetitive so I’ll stick with talking about her husband. He is a very very attractive man.
January 15th, 2008 at 12:57 pm
It’s funny… We were in Tahao for Christmas and went sledding on that very same hill with my 16 month old. It’s a great place..
January 15th, 2008 at 2:07 pm
Great column & pics!! You go girl – what a great family! Glad they were here for the snow over the holiday.
January 15th, 2008 at 9:59 pm

Melissa,
I Think it’s a good idea to keep the sex of the baby to yourself. you are a good actor ih Hoilyday in hand cuffs?
February 2nd, 2008 at 11:03 am
i think its such a shame that even though she is pregnant she still has to justify her weight its sad really that because she is in the limelight she is expected to go on diets and things to keep slim during her pregnancy kinda makes me respect her even more in the fact that she is embracing it, it just annoys the hell out of me that i found an article whilst looking at some of the harsh things people were saying about her, telling ‘hot’ women not to get pregnant because they are no longer ‘hot’ good on her for going all out and ignoring the hollywood hype of staying thin as it is she looks gorgeous has that wonderful motherly glow just because she isnt size zero doesnt make her any less attractive still a gorgeous looking woman (darn wish i looked that good being pregnant is all i can say lol)
xxxxx

Melissa is one of few celebrities whom I admire for not giving into the gossip and negativity that can surround a public figure. I am grateful that there is someone like her in the spotlight who is not a size 2 all the time and who does not let ridiculous comments about her weight affect her. She always seems to have a very down-to-earth attitude about life and always seems to be involved with one charity or another. Melissa really is a great role model for women everywhere!

I still watch you Sabrina, the Teenage Witch And i have watched you in hoilday in hand cuffs. Good work.

I love that Melissa is so down to earth and family-oriented. I think it’s so great that she’s taking time to be with her beautiful family and enjoy the pregnancy and birth of the new baby. People should respect that pregnant women absolutely glow and do not get fat, they just radiate more beauty that we’re used to seeing in that person; so the uneducated people call them fat. Smile, Melissa, your family is gorgeous. Best Wishes!
