Martin Luther King III expecting first child, a daughter
According to WSBTV in Atlanta, Martin Luther King III, 50, the oldest son of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his wife Coretta Scott King, will announce tonight at the Salute to Greatness dinner that he has married his girlfriend Arndrea Waters, 34, and that they are expecting a daughter in May. The couple was married shortly after Coretta passed away (January 2006). Of the couple’s four children, MLK III is the first to marry and have a child.
Isaac Farris Jr., president and CEO of the Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change, and a first cousin, said,
This is great news that a grandchild of Martin Luther King is cominginto the world. Our legacy continues.
The Salute to Greatness dinner raises funds for the KingCenter, which was founded by Coretta. MLK III founded and heads Realizing the Dream, which is committed to the creation of Dr. King Jr.’s vision of a Beloved Community through programs encompass health, education, employment, housing, economic development, leadership, community capacity, conflict resolution, nonviolence and peace initiatives. He also serves on the board of directors of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, the civil rights organization his father founded.

What Wonderful news. I wonder if they plan to name the baby Coretta as a first or middle name. Best wishes to the happy couple.

I’m so happy to hear this! I was always saddened to think that there might not be another generation of Kings.

Terri, me too! They are an interesting family aside from Dr.King’s work. I wish them the best, and wait to see pictures of the little sweetie!

This is wonderful news. Congratulations to MLK, III, and his wife. I’m only sad that his mom never got to see or hold a grandchild. What a tremendous boost to this family who has endured so much: the loss of Dr. King, his brother A.D., Dr. King’s mother killed while playing the piano in the church, the death of his mom, and his beloved sister. Though he is an older father, I hope he and his wife have a beautiful, healthy baby and a deep and satisfying marriage. May God bless them!

his mom was on the ORGAN. I was wishing for a BOY and hoped for the name MLK IV. Praise the LORD Dr. King’s name will live on thru a grandchild. I was so sure that DEXTER would be the 1st to marry. I have a group called KING KIDS and we learn ALL about the KING family. I regret that Mrs.King and Yolanda will miss this blessed event.
