Heath Ledger has passed away
We are saddened to report that actor Heath Ledger, 28, was found dead in his NYC apartment this afternoon. Heath leaves behind daughter Matilda Rose, 2, his child with actress Michelle Williams.
Paul Browne, Deputy Commissioner for Public Information of the New York Police Department stresses that a cause has not been determined, and an intial autopsy proved inconclusive. TMZ reports that Heath was found with prescription sleeping pills on his nightstand, however Browne points out that they were not ‘scattered around‘ and were prescription.
The NY Times reports that Heath’s housekeeper and a masseuse who arrived for an appointment with the actor found him unconscious and attempted to shake him awake, but he was in full cardiac arrest. When paramedics arrived, he was pronounced dead at the scene. Heath’s rep released a statement, saying,
We are all deeply saddened and shocked by this accident. This is an extremely difficult time for his loved ones and we are asking the media to please respect the family’s privacy and avoid speculation until the facts are known.
When asked for comment, Larry Williams, Michelle’s father, said,
I think Tennyson got it right in the poem when he described someone as having died at ayoung age but burning the candles at both ends, and oh what a beautifulflame he made, that was Heath, what a beautiful flame he made and agreat talent. My heart goes out to everyone in his family and my family. The saddest thing is his daughter whom he just loved dearly.
A statement from Heath’s family reads:
We, Heath’s family, confirm the very tragic, untimely and accidental passing of our dearly loved son, brother and doting father of Matilda, who was found in a peaceful sleep in his New York apartment by his housekeeper at 3:30 p.m. We would like to thank our friends and everyone around the world for their kind wishes at this time. Heath has touched so many people on so many different levels during his short life, but few had the pleasure to truly know him. He was a down-to-earth, generous, kind-hearted, life-loving and unselfish individual who was an extreme inspiration to many. Please now respect our family’s need to grieve and come to terms with our loss privately.

I went to read Perez Hilton and I saw it. My heart sank and I was just thinking is this some sick and disturbing joke? Then I saw it all over the news. I am just in complete shock. This is a complete shock! As far as I’m aware, he has never had any public problems with drug abuse. Though, that’s not to say he didn’t have drug problems that were kept private. This is so sad considering his young daughter. My condolences to all those affected.

The thing that bothers me the most is on TMZ they have the last picture of Heath which was taken on Saturday in London. He looked so happy. It’s so frightening to think that you are here one minute and the next you are not. My condolences go out to Michelle and Matilda. And also to Naomi Watts. I know they were dating at one point

This reminds me of Michael Hutchence, another Perth son. It doesn’t seem clear if his is death was an accident or on purpose. No-one can seem to say for sure what happened. He’s also leaving behind a very young daughter like Hutchence did. It’s all very sad. I just hope his parents and family didn’t hear about it on the news, that would be awful.

I have no clue why this has hit me so hard, but I feel just sick about this. My stomach just dropped when I read it. I too have a little girl who is almost 2 years old, and I can not imagine either myself or her father not being here to watch her grow up. It is so sad! I feel so sad for Matilda and also for Michelle. Even though they weren’t together anymore to lose the father of your child would be devastating. My heart truly goes out to all the families who will be affected by this loss.
FYI – TMZ is reporting that the death was accidental now…not drug related. I would never have believed it to be drug related.

When a child loses their parent, it always breaks my heart….especially at such a young age.
I don’t know if this is true or not, but I read on another website that he had become so entrenched in his role as The Joker that he was having trouble sleeping and had turned to sleeping pills to help him overcome it. Again, don’t know if this is true or not, but would lend more credence to the “he didn’t seem the type to abuse drugs” sentiment.

I have a special place in my heart for young children who have lost a parent. My neighbor passed away 4 years ago and left behind 5 children, aged 11 – 1 1/2 at the time. My heart goes out to Matilda.

I got home and put on the news at 5:00 and they were saying how his passing will put a damper on the oscar noms. I was sure I misheard and they were saying someone else’s name. A chill went up my spine. I’m still in shock. That sweet little girl, and those pictures of her on his shoulders. There are so many famous guys who get women pregnant and leave but he seemed like a real father, such a good guy with a good heart. I had a crush on him when I was 16 and saw 10 Things I Hate About You. And now we’ll never see another movie from him… It’s all just too sad.

I have seen a few of his movies, but my fondest memories I have of him is when he was out with his daughter on his shoulder around NY (with/without- Michelle) There was great love through all those pictures we saw. Matilda will see them, and she will know- Dad Loved Me. And that is the greatest gift of all Heath Ledger gave his baby girl Matilda.

I so saddened by this news. Heath was one of my favorite actors, and I am positive he was as great of a father as he was an actor. May you forever rest in peace, Heath. you will forever be missed.

Poor Matilda! She’s definitely at an age where this will affect her deeply. First her parents separate and now this! Heath had so much promise and this was such a big year for him. I refuse to believe that this was done on purpose, as some media outlets are reporting. He had the world at his feet and a daughter who adored him.
My thoughts are with Michelle, Matilda and his family – I hope reporters will leave them alone to deal with their grief. Michelle seems like a private person and has enough to deal with right now, without being harrassed. Very sad day

I’m surprised that so many people who commented on several news articles of Heath’s passing said that it’s such a shame and a waste that he died young. It wasn’t a waste–he did what he did, he did it his way (what a talented actor he was!), and in doing so touched and entertained so many of us. How selfish of us to say that we wished he could have stayed alive to make more movies…it’s too little, too late.
What is a shame, though, is that he will miss out on seeing his daughter grow up and that she will never truly know him. The loss to her, the rest of his family, Michelle, and his friends (my deepest condolences to them) can never really be measured as their relationship to him was far closer and more personal than the superficial “relationship” the rest of us had.
And knowing that, we should really refrain from making judgments about his character, about the characters of celebrities in general, or the cause of death until more facts are known.

I was shocked and even cried when I heard this. That surprised me. I feel so sad for Matilda and for Michelle and the job she has ahead of her, raising a little girl alone with all this sadness. It would kill me to see my daughter in that kind of pain.
He was truly a great actor and I think he still had yet to reach his full potential. My thoughts are with his family. They must be in so much pain right now.

Oh my. What an incredible tragedy. I’m not one who is given to hysterics everytime a celebrity dies, however I must admit to complete shock and disorientation. It doesn’t seem even remotely possible that a person of his youth and character has died. I can’t even imagine what Michelle is going through. Knowing that his daughter will never know him is incredibly sad. And finally, his parents……I hope I never know the sorrow their hearts have found today. May God bless them all.

I just found out not to long ago and I was in a total state of shock. Heath was a terrific actor and seemed to be an awesome father and man as well. I’m so sorry for his little daughter Matilda, Michelle, his parents, and the rest of his family and friends. Hollywood has trully lost a talented actor who I believe was destined for greatness. He will surely be missed as I have always enjoyed his work.
Reminds me of James Dean who was also approaching a high point in his career when he tragically died.

He had been the rumored subject of a particular drug related blind item a number of months ago, but honestly we all just want to believe those are entertainment value and nothing else. Celebrity is a wicked thing. Who knows why people fall prey to the evils that beckon? Stress, feelings of empowerment, just wanted to party? Anyway, its all speculation.
Regardless of what took his young life, he was an amazing actor. More tragic is his beautiful little girl will not remember him nor will she ever know him.
How horrible his family found out via the media rather than a personal call. I cannot even imagine how gut-wrenching that would be.

I’ve been in shock the entire day. I cried for a non-stop week when John Ritter passed away and now to find out that Heath ledger is gone too is pulling at me. I keep expecting this to be some sick joke the media is playing but I know its not. He’s on the list of one of my favorite celebrities and I was always hoping that he and Michelle would get back together.
I just wish the media and the paparazzi would leave the family alone and let him rest in peace because I’ve been reading on this all day and the paps have been really disturbing. Much as I like getting my fixture of babies and celebrities expecting, I feel right now its at a point of invasion of privacy.

Like everyone else, I am unbelieveably saddened by Heath Ledger’s death. It’s so shocking. The picture you posted is my favourite of Heath and Matilda. They look like two of a kind. He always seemed so devoted to her. My daughter is very close in age to Matilda, and of course the thought of not seeing her grow up is heartbreaking and unbearable. My thoughts are with his baby and his family. He was a great talent and will be missed.

My own mother was the one who alerted to me this untimely passing, which it is in every way, and asked me why I hadn’t told her since I’m usually the one with all the information. But not so this time. I’m still in shock. I can’t even begin to wrap my mind around this being real just yet. He shouldn’t be gone.
I can only feel for his family and friends, especially that sweet little lookalike of his, Matilda. I don’t care what anyone says, that man loved that little girl to pieces and she him. Written in their faces and how they interacted in photos. I know most feel bad for his Matilda and the rest of his family and whomever, but I also feel for him. He only had a few years with his daughter. I just can’t stand when parents are taken away from children.
I just don’t know what else to say other than my thoughts are with his family. He will definitely be missed.

I didn’t really watch his movies, mainly cause they never appealed to me, so I didn’t care to know about Heath Ledger…until Matilda was born. And then I saw what a great father he was and how she lit up his world, and I really began to admire him. As much as I dislike and disagree with the paparazzi, their photos and sites like CBB have sort of built an album for Matilda. And hopefully one day, she will see all of these pictures and see how much happiness radiated from her father when she was with him.

I am in shock like most of the world! I was a fan of Heath’s, and as soon as I heard I was in disbelief and i still dont believe it! it is a true loss, and I cant believe the sadness that his friends and family muct be feeling. It is Horrible that Matilda will never remember meeting her father, but I know his family and Michelle will keep his memories alive for her and she will get to know her father, maybe not in the conventional way but I am sure that they share home videos and do anything they can to help Matilda get to know her father. I am sure Michelle will do a wonderful job raising their daughter alone, they always seemed down-to-earth and protective of Matilda, and I am sure that she will do everything in her power to protect and gaurd her from people looking to harm Heath’s Legacy. I know it is probably a difficult time for her and my thoughts are with Michelle, Matilda and Heath’s Family!

I live in the same suburb as Heath’s parents and my girlfriend lives across the street from them. The street is a total ZOO with newsvans – and they are only the locals. Give it a day and the papparazzi will be in full force as I am sure the funeral will be in Perth. I used to see him, Michelle and the little girl around during the Christmas 2006 holiday period at the local cafe. So terribly sad, especially for his daughter and for his parents finding out on the news.

This is so tragic. My heart goes out to his family and friends. I am very close to my father and could not imagine losing him.
On a different note, people should email any magazine that they read on a regular basis that will also cover this and make sure they express their opinion regarding photos of the Ledger/Williams extended family being published. Other blogs have similar polls, and an overwhelming number of people do not want their privacy invaded and do not want to see any such photos in their favorite mags.

I am deeply saddened by his death for all, especially his daughter who will be too young to have lifelong memories of him. It is simply tragic.
I am appauled at the media and the people who informed them though, many of Heath’s friends and family found out from the media who were informed of the story too soon and the lack of privacy the authorities provided about this situation.

Oh my god!!! I saw the headline on a gossip site and thought “that’s sick, people will think he actually died, he has a family you know!!” but it’s true. I can’t believe it.

as a person who lost their father at 2, i feel deeply for Matilda. However, I do remember one memory of eating cake with my dad. It is possible to have those memories. And whats more the “blessing” is there are thousands of pictures, and video tape hours of her daddy for her for life. She will know who he is, but will not get to grow up with him and thats the sad part. I dont have any video of my dad but i have pictures, and the bottom line is i knew i was loved.
Matilda, I hope you grow up and know that too.

This is shocking news to me too. When I found out, I just couldn’t believe it and wished it wasn’t true, that it didn’t happen. Somehow I wish time would of gone back and changed his faith. It is just a terrible loss. I was a fan of Heath, saw about 6-7 of his movies, but right now I don’t feel like watching any of them b/c seeming him smile, oh what a heart warming smile, makes me feel sad inside an I cannot stand too look at a picture of him smiling. I just feel numb inside. No other celebrity death has ever made me feel strickinling sad, but Heath’s does. I guess there was just something special about him, something that no one else had. The Westboro Baptist Church (famous for protestin the funerals of gays and soldiers along with anyone and anything that disagrees with them and their repulsive atrocities) has just issues a press release saying they plan to picket Heath’s funeral and claim he is in Hell for appearing in Brokeback Mountain. As I mentioned earlier, I wasn’t even a fan of his (didn’t know enough of his work to be considered one), and this makes me furious beyond belief. What ever happened to honoring the dead? I hope to God Michelle, Matilda, and the rest of their families and friends don’t have to be subjected to these monsters. They’re suffering enough.

I don’t know why but I am so upset by this. So shocked too. I know it’s silly as I never knew him, but it has really got to me.
I lost my daddy suddenly when I was 12 and the youngest in our family was 9, we were old enough to understand what was happening and it is still hard to deal with sometimes even though it was 8 years ago. My heart truly goes out to his poor little baby girl. She and her daddy will be in my prayers.

2 days after his death, i still can’t believe it.
I’m also very sad how “public” this has become.
I’m ashamed of myself because i saw a video of Michelle’s mother begging the papaarazzi to leave her and her family alone.
When i heard about this really sad news, i didn’t even think think:
” Heath Ledger-the actor-has died” i thought, ” a baby girl has just lost her father, a family has lost their son..”.
24 hours after his death, his dad, his uncles were on tv begging for no speculation..how sad is that!
I don’t think he could have done something like that to his daughter, this was a very sad accident that cost a man’s life.

I was shocked to read that Heath Ledger had died by an overdose sleeping pills. Why did he not stop to think of the risk of dying before using it? Accidental as it might be, its hard to understand why a man would want to take that chance when he`s got a beautiful baby girl at home. It was like he predicted his own death at a young age when he said something in the lines of: “Its OK for me to die now, because a part of me will live on through my daughter”. He also said he would like to be around and see her grow up, but now he only will watch over her from heaven. Its also many many years till hes get to hold her in his arms again..
