Frances Bean Cobain: ‘I’m taking my time’

Tags: Dads, Kids, News, Quotes

At a time when many of her peers are famous merely for being famous, 15-year-old Frances Bean Cobain — refreshingly — isn’t willing to cash in on the insta-fame she’s arguably entitled to as the daughter of Courtney Love and the late Kurt Cobain.  In the March issue of Harper’s Bazaar, Frances says that although she understands the public interest in her life, "at the same time its creepy."

These people are fascinated by me, but I haven’t done anything. I’m famous by default. I came out of the womb andpeople wanted to know who I was because of my parents. If you’re a big Nirvana fan, a big Hole fan, then I understand why you would want to get to know me, but I’m not my parents.  People need to wait until I’ve done something valid with my life.

With interests that range from photography to acting to journalism — including a potential internship at Rolling Stone — Frances is in no hurry to be pigeon-holed.

I’m taking my time. But I get asked what I want to do all the time because of my parents, because of the life I live.

For the magazine Frances was photographed as Evita as well as characters from Grease and Beauty and the Beast, which Courtney deemed fitting given her daughter’s love of musicals.  Frances, Courtney quipped, "is a gay man trapped in a woman’s body, like me." Frances, for her part, sings the praises of her paternal grandmother in Olympia, Washington whom she credits as "the most constant thing I’ve ever had."  She adds,

I’m really lucky because I’ve been able to go places and meet people you can only dream of, but she’s probably the person I respect most out of anybody in the world.

She’s gorgeous! And seems so grown up for only being 15!

  2. dee Says:

any way we would be able to see the rest of the scans at a later date? sounds like a very cute photo shoot

  3. Valerie Says:

i think she is the spitting image of her father…just too bad he wasn’t around to see her grow up. she just got stuck with her druggy mother who was more interested in doing drugs and taking all of Curt Kobains $$, and i’m sure she was behind his death as well. too sad. `

  4. CTBmom Says:

I am so impressed with her maturity….she really seems to have a good head on her shoulders. I am glad that she had her grandmother to offer some stability to her life.

  5. Heather Says:

She sounds like such a mature 15 year old. Good for her. I think she’ll do great things with her life.

  6. mother_theresa Says:

I’m a huge Nirvana fan. It’s nice that Kurt’s daughter is so mature and self-aware, etc, at such a young age. But at the same time, she’s in a photo spread in a Harper’s Bazaar for the very same reasons that she finds “creepy”. In her own words “…but I haven’t done anything…”.

  7. ang Says:

i love that she says wait til i do something valid. i think this comment applies to all celebrity babies, particularly the obsessed-over ones(i think u know who im talking about). they’re cute but they’re BABIES, CHILDREN-they’re aren’t gonna change the world.yet.

  8. Kaley Says:

She seems like a girl with a good head on her shoulders. Her photoshoot seems really interesting, I can’t wait to see her pictures.

  9. ella Says:

mother_theresa, my thoughts exactly. Her sentiments would be more believable if she weren’t doing a photo shoot and giving interviews in magazines when as she says “haven’t done anything”. Nice thoughts but oh the irony!

  10. Ivey Says:

Why exactly did she do the photo shoot?

Sarah’s note: I think they just asked her to and she accepted. She’s not promoting anything. She’s done 4 interviews total: Teen Vogue in Sept ‘05, I-D in Jan ‘06, Elle in August ‘06 and now Harper’s Bazaar.

  11. UggaMugga.com Says:

She’s beautiful and Kurt would be proud! It still makes me so sad that he left a little girl behind. I thought of him as soon as I heard about Heath. It just breaks my heart as a mother of two littles ones. I can’t imagine all of a sudden being alone without a co-parent. I have no doubt Michelle will do an amazing job raising Matilda and now I see Courtney did a great job with Francis, despite her addictions and such. They seem very close and I’m happy they have each other.

  12. Pam Says:

To those who have an issue with her doing the photospread, I got the feeling that she knows the interest is only there because of who her parents are, she knows that, and is acknowledging it through her comments.

She looks a lot like her dad. She seems very well-spoken and like she has a plan for her life. Refreshing.

  13. daphneesmith Says:

She seems like a total doll.

  14. Elizabeth Says:

Shouldn’t there be some trade offs in life? She lost her dad at an early age and her mom seems like a mess. What, she’s supposed to live with that and not do a fun photo shoot ever? I don’t get the logic. She basically got to play dress up for a day. Sounds like fun. Good for her!

  15. Ericka Says:

After everything she’s been through (mother being an addict/not being there the whole time she was growing up and her father dying at such a young age) I’m so glad that she’s got such a good head on her shoulders. She’s beautiful also

  16. Beattie Says:

When I wasn’t much older than Frances Bean is now, I was a huge Nirvana and Hole fan and I’ve actually seen both bands in concert. I’m just relieved that given the trajectory of her parents’ lives, she has ended up being an apparently grounded kid. Hopefully she’ll reject the false lure of celebrity and do something authentic with her life.

  17. meghan Says:

Frances seems like a smart young woman with a good head on her shoulders. Beautiful and truly the best of both her parents. Kurt would be proud, I just know it.

  18. Autumn Says:

That’s cool Frances is so level headed. After her parents & their drama, who knew how she’ turn out, but fortunately it was for the best.

I’ll have to see those pics of her in Harper’s Bazarre. The other day I was imagining a more modern/or era specific (to 1991) version of BATB, which the post-Beast Prince as a wannabe classic Eddie Vedder, long hair, jumping off a balchony onto his fans & friends, but with Frances Cobain as Belle, it’s just par for the course! lol!

  19. Smile Says:

she is very beautifull and i feel sorry for her because really she doesnt even know her dad and people all around the world knew who he was. she only has photos in photo frames but also on the net. Shes doing very well for herself
