You pronounce it the way sarah said, but you take a breath between makena and lei b/c that is an okina (aka glottal stop) and you take a breath when you see that marking.

Hi, I haven’t posted here (although I love the site), but since I’m native Hawaiian, I thought I’d clear up the pronunciation. Sarah was accurate about the pronunciation, and Kim was correct about the fact that with an ‘okina (glottal stop), you take a short pause. However, Makena’lei’s name is a misspelling. ‘Okina never come before or after a consonant. In Hawaiian, it would be Makenalei, one word without a glottal stop, with the pentameter being like this: ma-KE-na-LEI (Sorry, I couldn’t figure out how to type out iambic pentameter with my keyboard). =P

Hi there…
Some on here are saying that “Sarah” posted how to pronounce Helen’s daughters name, but I don’t see a post from “Sarah”. I hate to admit it, but I’m still confused how to pronounce this childs name–can someone please explain it to those of us who are still confused?? Thanks a bunch
Sarah’s note: My post is in bold beneath Emily’s comment.

I thought I read somewhere (probably when she was born) that her first name is Makena and lei is her middle name, in honor of Helen’s father, because they liked to visit Hawaii together. Something like that!
Sarah’s note: Her middle name is Gordon after Helen’s dad.
