Renée Zellweger: “Motherhood has never been an ambition”

If you are thinking that actress Renée Zellweger is planning on starting a family, then you may just be wrong. The 38-year-old admits that motherhood isn’t something that she has scheduled in her life right now.
Motherhood has never been an ambition. I don’t think like that. I never have expectations like ‘when I’m 19 I’m going to do this, and by the time I’ve hit 25 I’m going to do that’. I just take things as they come, each day at a time, and if things happen, all well and good. I just want to be independent and be able to take care of myself. Anything else is just gravy.

Hm, I don’t come to same conclusion reading this quote. I think she’s trying to explain that she opts to go with the flow in life. A “flow-er”, not a “planner”, you know? That doesn’t mean she’ll never have kids, not by any means!

I really applaud her attitude! Motherhood is not for everyone, and it’s good to hear that celebrities are just like regular people too.

I take it as she is saying, she is not planning on motherhood, but if she get’s pregnant, great! I think Giada DeLaurentiis said the same thing. She said they never really decided to have kids or not. She said that she just ended up pregnant and it was a pleasant surprise! Giada said they always had the attitude that if they have kids, great, if they don’t that’s great too, but we aren’t going to force it. It’s better than someone like Janet Jackson, who obviously never plans on having kids, but “pretends” that’s still could be something in her future.

Sasha, I tend to agree with your interpretation of Renee’s comment.

I also believe you interpreted her words correctly, Sasha. I think Renee was saying that while she has never planned to be a mother, just as she has never definitively planned to do anything in her life, it would be a wonderful addition if it came along. I doubt it has to do with her flat-out not wanting kids.
I absolutely love Renee-I think she’s an absolute sweetheart and would make a phenomenal mother-but I completely respect where she’s coming from. Whatever happens, I just hope she’s happy. She deserves it.

Sorry, but I am totally CONFUSED!!!!
When Renee married Kenny Chesney, it seemed like she did so to start a family, but when Kenny seemed to “back off” from the idea the marriage was over because it “seemed” like Renee was in a rush to start a family. !?!?!?!?
I am sooooooo confused!! I KNOW Kenny has stated in the past that he didn’t want to start a family until he could give his “ALL” to his family only(and obviously that is not now as he tours A LOT)
Sooooo….what is it Renee????????????

I think when a 38 year old woman doesn’t have any plans for a family and refers to motherhood as something she doesn’t have scheduled in her life right now, she’s very diplomatically saying she doesn’t want kids. Celebrities have to be very careful about this subject. I have no idea why, but goodness forbid an actress come right out and admit she doesn’t want kids. It’s become almost expected that any celebrity asked this question will coo about how badly they want babies, and they can’t wait to have them. And I get the sense some are faking the enthusiasm. I think people, if given the chance, would be supportive of a celebrity’s choice to remain childless, though. If my mother, who has wanted nothing more than grandchildren for decades, can accept my choice, then it’s possible.

Abby, I like your interpretation better.

I agree with Abby 100%. I thought it was interesting that many of you read into her comments with the implication that “surely she may want kids one day” when nothing of the kind was even suggested! She’s 38, a very accomplished woman and stated that motherhood was never an ambition – how much clearer can she be? And as I said earlier, I applaud her for basically saying to the world and all her fans that she has no ambition to become a mom. She definitely has my support in this regard!

For some reason, I find it a relief to hear this. I dunno, maybe I just appreciate this kind of outlook.

I agree with you abby, and for some reason I never pictured renee with kids. I feel the same way about janet jackson and mariah carey.

I read it as it hasn’t happened, it may happen, but I’m okay if it doesn’t happen.
