Storksak Elizabeth: Superstardom awaits you

You’re never going to confuse me with Angelina Jolie.  I don’t circle the globe with the ‘Sexiest Man Alive,’ know how to pilot a plane, work as a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations, donate millions of dollars to charity, or even have millions of dollars to begin with — But I digress.  I’m just a relatively average mom, living a relatively average existence with my dorky (but cute!) math teacher husband and our two little boys.  Recently, however, I got just the briefest of glimpses into what it must be like to be Angelina.  On a beautiful, warm spring day some girlfriends and I went to brunch in the city with our kids and on my arm was none other than — no, not Brad Pitt — the new Elizabeth diaper bag, in chalk, from Storksak.  Instant superstardom ensued.  At least amongst the moms in attendance.

The brand that Angelina and Brad have both used and loved recently released several new styles for spring/summer 2008 and they’re practically guaranteed to make you feel like a superstar, too.

The Elizabeth ($285) is not a new style for Storksak, having debuted last fall, but two new colors for spring are:  Chalk, which we tested (shown at the intro of the review) and blush, a beautiful rose color.  There’s no two ways about it: The bag looks and feels totally luxurious.  Crafted of 100% creamy white washed, toughened, cow hide leather, Elizabeth in chalk is soft and supple — but good structure allows the bag to retain its tote-like shape.  It has two outside pockets and brass hardware accents.  Measuring in at 11″Hx17.5″Wx5.5″D, Elizabeth is a good size. I could easily pack enough for both boys to be away from home for several hours while still comfortably carrying it on my shoulder.

Elizabeth comes with a removable thermo-insulated bottle holder which can keep fluids hot or cold for five hours, a padded changing mat, tons of pockets for diapering supplies and other baby must-haves, and a key-ring clip.  The top zips shut and it comes with a removable, secondary shoulder strap if you’d like to bypass the padded handles altogether.  The interior is nice and bright, a pleasing shade of beige, and its easy to find whatever you’re looking for inside.  Elizabeth is not inexpensive, but in this instance you really do get what you pay for.  If you’re in the mood to splurge on a bag that meets your functional needs while also wowing passersby with its beauty, Elizabeth could be a perfect fit.

We also were lucky enough to test the Emily bag ($168, shown at left) in black.  That’s right, the Storksak bag of choice for Angelina herself.  The soft nylon exterior (also available in pewter, chocolate and sand, a new color for spring/summer 2008) easily wipes clean and Emily comes with a padded changing mat, a detachable inner bag for wipes or makeup, a cell phone pocket and an adjustable shoulder strap. Measuring a modest 11″Hx15″Wx6″D, Emily is deceptively large on the inside and can lug a lot more than you might think.  But that’s not the only secret Emily is keeping.

Two side-zip insulated pockets stash your bottles or sippy cups, and because they’re flush with the shape of the bag itself you’d never even know they’re there. What I really love about that feature — and about the overall look and size of Emily — is that its a bag I can continue to use once my kids are no longer in diapers.  So many diaper bags bill themselves as being able to pull that kind of double-duty, but Storksak actually pulls it off:  Emily looks like a large hobo purse, and a fashionable one at that.  When you think about the lifetime of use you’re buying with Emily, its easy to consider it a long-term investment that will pay off in spades.
