I have some questions about sign language that I hope someone can answer. I have only heard of American Sign Language but surely other countries have their own versions. Is it as hard to learn different signs for different languages as it is to learn to speak another language? Or is sign language fairly universal? I have done basic signs with my kids and it seems that some signs would be universal. Like cat or dog.

finnaryn – I learned sign language for a while. Just in British Sign Language – which I learned – there are huge regional differences between signs (a bit like a dialect or an accent). But my teacher also said, a lot of deaf people who communicate with sign language are able to communicate with each other regardless of their original sign language. I think it’s a different way of ’speaking’ but once you understand how to think in signs rather than words, it’s easier to communicate.

Thank you ellie. That is how I thought it was.
Hmmm… maybe world leaders would all be able to talk with each other better if they talked in signs rather than words.
