"I was too emotional [when I was pregnant]. I cried at the drop of a hat. It’s Hallmark commercials, it’s anything you could possibly imagine. Not even Hallmark. It’s a coffee commercial, and they pick up [the cup of coffee] and I’d go [crying] ‘Ooooh, it’s coffee!’"

Gwyneth Paltrow on her daughter and ’sensitive thug’

Tags: Ha ha, News, Quotes, Video

Gwyneth_paltrow_1Actress Gwyneth Paltrow appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman on Monday. The 35-year-old mentioned her daughter Apple Blythe Alison, 4 next month, and son Moses, 2, saying that Apple has very feminine aspects about her and Moses is a ’sensitive thug.’

It’s a very good age difference, but boys and girls are very fundamentally different, aren’t they? So there are some interesting things going on in the house.

They just play so differently. She’s quiet and imaginative and very verbal. She likes to sit with her things and build houses and hotels for her dolls. My son will just come and trash the hell out of anything she’s doing. And if he can inflict pain on her while he’s trashing, then even better. Then she gets furious and says he’s ‘antagonizing’ her. We call him our ’sensitive thug.’ It’s a line from a Jay-Z song and it fits him perfectly.

She’s kind of started to give it back to him, but in a very female, under-the-radar way.

Dad is Coldplay’s Chris Martin.

He’s “antagonizing” her? That is too funny! I mean, the way she’s wording this is funny, not that he does this….

  2. Mari Says:

I found her description of the interaction between Apple and Moses quite humorous! And quite typical of a sibling relationship. :)

It sounds if Gwyneth and Chris have things well in hand ’cause – at times – it sure helps if you keep your sense of humor while parenting.

  3. P Says:

Coming from a situation with roughly the same age difference between myself and a sibling, this quote rings too true and as adorable as Gwyn’s kids are and as great of a parent as she probably is, I don’t think this is particularly funny.

I mean, yeah, he’s two, and yeah, I’m sure he gets disciplined in some fashion, but imagine being some sweet sensitive kid who keeps to herself and does nothing to deserve having her toys trampled, her books ripped and her hair pulled, and then finding out that her parents think it’s “funny” and that the behavior is not taken seriously because “boys will be boys?”

  4. Anna Says:

P- the article says nothing about what Gwyneth thinks of her sons behaviour and how she deals with it. Maybe she doesn’t think it’s funny and maybe she does take it seriously? Jumping to conclusions is never a good thing IMO.

  5. Sarah Says:

P, I wouldn’t worry about it too much. I’m an older sister, and we give just as good as we get. We’re just a little smarter about it :)

  6. Lauren Says:

I would be the first to call Gwyneth out for not disciplining Moses if there was evidence that was the case, but until there is, I’m going to continue thinking the story is funny. That bit about Apple complaining that Moses is “antagonizing” her is too much!

To be honest, I’m just relieved there is no debate over the “sensitive thug” reference. With all the things people lose their heads over on this site, I was sure that nickname would spark debate. Glad to see I was wrong.

  7. Kelly Says:

I have three boys and none of them played like that with each other – they don’t randomly knock over each others buildings and whatnot. I agree with Apple that her brother is antagonizing her. He has found a way to push her buttons and boys do like to do that!

  8. Elizabeth Says:

Sounds like Gwyneth has her hands full!

  9. 80smelissa Says:

sounds exactly like my brother and me back in the day…20+ years later we are the best of friends :)

  10. CelebBabyLover Says:

Lauren- ITA! I, too, had the exact same thought about the “sensitive thug” comment. I must say, if this had been Angelina saying this about one of her boys, people would have been criticizing her and calling her a bad mother (just as they did when she made her now infamous “blob” comment about Shiloh…a comment that the interviewer came up with rather than her in the first place!).

  11. HardCandy Says:

Don’t worry as she gets older she probably find some creative ways to torment her brother all older siblings do. Hopefully this won’t affect her self-esteem much.

  12. Babuskha Says:

I can’t believe Gwyneth still can get onto a major talk show. Surely with her career plummeting she should be scraping the bottom of the cable TV barrel. I also find it hilarious that she keeps prattling on about how her marriage is “sacrosanct” and she and Chris Martin never talk about each other or appear anywhere together … yet she’s happy to go on the record with stories that will embarrass her kids in the future.

  13. brooke Says:

Sounds like a lot of brother and sisters, how funny lol
