Update: Paula Deen interviews Senator Hillary Clinton; your chance to ask the questions

Update: Senator Hillary Clinton was met with questions from mothers around the country via the web, questions by audience members, and also those from her interviewer, Paula Dean.

As a politician, a wife, and a mother to her daughter, Chelsea Victoria, 28,  Senator Clinton was asked how she manages to juggle it all while still performing her duties as New York’s Senator and finding quality time to spend with her family.  While Hillary confessed that she sometimes had to put her social life aside, she always managed to find creative ways to spend time with Chelsea and her husband, former President Bill Clinton — including a joined family effort to crack open a coconut!

One time Chelsea said she heard about coconuts and had never seen one, so we went to the store and bought a coconut [and] we took it home.  And Bill and I — you know, between us we’ve had 50 years of education — could not get the coconut open.  I mean we were throwing it on the driveway, beating it with a hammer, it was so embarrassing.

Although the Senator was asked advice on how she dealt with parenting a teenager, she admitted to the audience that she wasn’t the best person to ask!  She explained that Chelsea was in the White House as a teenager and when she began to take interest in boys, which meant Secret Service always joined her and her date!

You really cannot extrapolate from my experience, because Chelsea was a teenager in the White House which meant that the Secret Service went on her dates.  A lot of her girlfriends’ mothers loved it when they double dated because, you know, because there was the guy with the gun in the front seat.

Continue reading for Senator Clinton’s story about drawing the line with Chelsea’s wardrobe and for the original post.

Senator Clinton recalls a particular memory during her husband’s second inauguration when she was stunned at Chelsea’s wardrobe choice, but realizing there was no time for her to change, figured that maybe there are things that are much more important after all.

My idea of what was proper dressing when my daughter was a teenager was just totally absurd in her mind.  There’s a picture — it was Bill’s second inauguration, and we were leaving the White House to drive to the Capitol for him to be sworn in.  The plan was that we were going to drive for a little bit and the Secret Service had an area that the Secret Service said it was OK for us to get out of the car and walk a little bit.

So Chelsea came down — she was dressed and had a coat on…she opened it…the skirt was so short.  And I’m sitting there looking at this short skirt, and there’s no time to change, and I thought ‘Ok, you just have to take a deep breath.  Here we go.’  There are so many things that are worth engaging your kids on and so many things that are not important, and trying to figure out how to draw the line.

  1. Dierna Says:

Poor Hillary. She has to deal with Paula saying “Ya’ll” every other word. *lol*

  2. loren Says:

I may watch this interview. It will be interesting to know what questions the Mothers
ask. Glad that the moms get a chance to voice
    their concerns.

  3. Chiara Says:

It occurs to me as I read this that I barely ever hear the Clintons talk about Chelsea, and I have enormous respect for them for that. By all accounts she’s a great kid (well, woman now!), and they could very easily trot her out as a testament to their values and blah blah blah, and they don’t.

Regardless of how anyone feels about the Clintons politically, they have done a fantastic job raising their daughter through some very tough circumstances.

  4. sigh Says:

I love that coconut story, LOL!

  5. Andria Says:

Dierna – Being that Hillary spent years in Arkansas, I doubt she’s phased by “y’all”. I’m from Durham, NC (just a few miles from Cary) and that’s pretty standard speech here. She’d deal with that no matter who the interviewer was, haha.

  6. Theryn Says:

I was at that inaugural parade with my mom. Chelsea’s skirt caused a 20 minute conversation about clothes. As I recall the suit was too tight in general and not really flattering as a result.
