Yes, is truth that in many countries the girls gets ear piercings at short age, most latin america, spains, Africa, and other countries in Europe. Actually US is one of the few countries where is not usual.

piercing your ears has NOTHING to do with culture. Every culture has babies with pierced ears as a baby.

Hispanic/Latino thing? I don’t know about that- my parents are Nigerian, and both my sisters’ and my ears were pierced when we all were a few weeks old. As were all my relatives. As was most children that I grew up with (I was born and bred here in the US)- most of whom had American parents. So maybe it’s an era thing (’70s/’80s)? I don’t know. Either way, it’s not at all a big deal to me- the baby cries for all of about 15 seconds and then it’s done and over with. As far as personal choice- it’s just earrings, for goodness’ sake. Your child can take them out later if she/he doesn’t want them.

I don’t think culture is justification for things. It’s such an easy answer. That’s what people say about circumcision as well, both male and female! Just because it has been done for ages does not make it right.
And to distinguish a girl from a boy seems like a very superficial reason.

I can’t believe you would make such a judgmental and snood comment like that. I come from a very large puerto rican family, and as any hispanic family would tell you that ear piercing is VERY common on babies/young girls. I have a 6 yr old daughter and believe it not she has -gasp- four piercings.(two in each ear) And it was NOT for superficial reasons. She got her first like any other hispanic girl when she was just a baby, and her second when she was almost 5, because she asked for it. And she is not TRAUMATIZED . Just as a jewish family chooses to circumscribed thier sons. As a culture it’s there RIGHT. You might not like it, and have every right to. But you should respect it. It’s called TOLERANCE. No matter it’s race or religon or cultural traditions.

I have three daughters and they all had their ears pierced after their first shots.(6 weeks) I had them pierced because? Well I’m their mother, I wanted them done and I was not putting them in harms way. Holes close up if my girls had gotten to an age where they didn’t want to wear earrings then fine, I’d have taken them out and let the holes close. When they are babies they cry for a few seconds at the most and not even 60/1 minute. To each their own!!!

Pamela, if that comment was aimed at me i didnt say she shouldnt have got her daughters ears pierced, i didnt say it was wrong and i most certainly didnt say it would ruin her life! I simply expressed my opinion that i didnt like it, i believe i am allowed to do that the same as others have expressed opinions that they like it. I wasnt nasty in my comment and when someone told me it was a cultural thing i can say that i understand it more, unfortunately i do not know everything and if my comments offended anyone i apologise. I wont be expressing my opinion again on here because it seems that if you dont have the “right” one then you get jumped on!
