Jamah’s Nanny Bag: The dual use bag for mom and dad
Like just about everything else in their lives, when Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie go shopping — they go all out. The clan that blossomed from a family of two to a family of eight in just three short years no doubt knows what it means to buy in bulk, and that’s exactly what they did when they recently placed an order with Jamah. Owner Nancy Gale was all-too happy to oblige the Jolie-Pitt’s request for seven — that’s right, seven — bags from her collection, including The Messenger, which Brad sported at the Cannes Film Festival in May. If you like the look, you’re going to love The Nanny — It’s a variation of The Messenger, only in the form of a dedicated (unisex!) diaper bag that is guaranteed to leave tongues wagging across the globe.
We were lucky enough to test The Nanny over a period of two weeks. While some may scoff at the price tag ($649), for better or worse, there is a market for luxury diaper bags and if you’re prepared to spend this much then buying a bag with post-baby value is key. The Nanny fits the bill. Carrying it feels like wearing your favorite pair of broken in jeans — the Italian lambskin is supple and soft while rugged at the same time, which is precisely why it works so well as a unisex bag. The leather is decidedly masculine, but a detachable magnetized flower decal snaps easily to the outside of the bag for a nice feminine touch. Either way, you’d never know The Nanny is a diaper bag if you didn’t peek inside. It’s a bag you both can carry, long after you’ve packed your last diaper.
While you’re still in the diaper zone, however, you’ll find plenty of room to stash them in The Nanny. Measuring in at 10 ½ x 15 ½ x 4-inches, it is a standard messenger-style size and there is ample storage. On the outside you have two front pockets, two back pockets and two side bottle pockets (which are not insulated — my one and only knock on The Nanny). On the inside, you’re treated to four open pockets and a zip pocket. The black utility lining is soft and wipeable, and is also applied to the generously-sized (25 x 12") changing pad. A large flap opening seals courtesy of magnetic closures, while an adjustable strap allows you to customize the way you carry the bag. At it’s shortest length (15") you can tuck The Nanny right under your arm, and at it’s longest length (25") you’ll be able to wear it low on your hip, like a true messenger bag.
The Nanny comes available in a variety of colors, including bark, chestnut, chocolate laser, vintage, daisy and slate — the latter two of which are considered ’special items.’ We tested The Nanny in bark (shown at right) and daisy (shown at intro of review) and found both to be equally luxurious. I was partial to the rich buttery yellow hue of daisy (also gifted to new mom Jessica Alba!) while my husband prefers the bark and it’s vintage, weathered vibe. There are no two ways about it — The Nanny is a splurge for most of us, but I love its ‘dual-dual’ use: Not only is it easy to pull off as a non-baby bag, it’s just as easy to hand the bag off to dad. If it’s good enough for Brad Pitt, after all, it’s certainly good enough for him!
All of Jamah’s bags are handmade in the USA.
