Actually registering for baby gifts is pretty common in the US, just as it is for wedding gifts. All of my friends with kids have registered for gifts for the baby shower. Granted, they registered at stores more along the lines of Target and Babies R Us rather than posh boutiques :-p I appreciated them registering so I knew what to get them, how they were decorating their nurseries and whatnot.
