Matt Damon and Wife Welcome Daughter Gia Zavala
Actor Matt Damon and his wife Luciana, 32, welcomed another daughter today, Wednesday, August 20th, in Miami, Fla. Gia Zavala joins big sisters Isabella, 2, and Alexia, 10, Luciana’s child from her previous marriage. Matt’s rep shared that "everyone’s doing great," adding that "she is a healthy baby girl."
The pregnancy was announced in March, with Matt, 37, revealing in July that the baby would be another girl, lamenting, "I’m so outnumbered!" Luciana’s due date was August 16th.

I don’t like the name Gia. It’s the name of that druggie model. I would’ve preferred Gianna instead. Also, ‘Zavala’ is a last name in Portuguese and Spanish. I wonder if this is Luciana’s maiden name.
August 20th, 2008 at 5:40 pm
What a beautiful name. I am so happy for them. He sounds like a wonderful dad.
August 20th, 2008 at 5:44 pm
I’m surprise by the name! It’s Italian right? I think it’s beautiful though, I love italian names, but I wasn’t expecting one since Isabella could be considered an english name, but maybe see it the italian way. But Gia Zavala is 100% italian.
Does Isabella has a middle name?
Congrats, I bet she’s beautiful!
August 20th, 2008 at 5:45 pm
Congrats to them! Love the name!
August 20th, 2008 at 5:47 pm
Congrats to the Damon’s!!! Very pretty name and flows well with their other kids!
August 20th, 2008 at 5:49 pm
gorgeous name for the new baby! love it! i was expecting something very traditional, great surprise
August 20th, 2008 at 5:50 pm
I love that they announced the birth and name so quickly! There is always so much speculation with celebrities! It’s nice to just know for sure.
Lovely name! Congrats to them all!
August 20th, 2008 at 5:51 pm
Congrats to Matt & Luciana! Gia Zavala is a pretty name!
August 20th, 2008 at 5:53 pm
another fabulous name! congrats!
August 20th, 2008 at 5:57 pm
She has the same name as me! I’ve never met anyone who shares my name (that didn’t have it as a nickname!:p
Congrats to Matt and his Luciana! Love the name.;)
August 20th, 2008 at 5:57 pm
Steph, I’m pretty sure Isabella is Italian (at least according to babynames.com…). I was expecting something feminine and beautiful, like the other girls. Gia is just gorgeous. I love it!
Congrats to them!
August 20th, 2008 at 6:07 pm
I don’t think they ever released Isabella’s middle name if she does have one.
August 20th, 2008 at 6:13 pm
Congrats to the family! Her name is just stunning.
August 20th, 2008 at 6:23 pm
I thought it was Isabella Jane? Not too fond of this one’s ma,e, b ut I’m so happy for them, I’m sure she’s beautiful.
August 20th, 2008 at 6:26 pm
They never released Isabella’s middle name, but they did release her weight. So I guess we get a middle name for Gia but no weight.
August 20th, 2008 at 6:28 pm
Sorry about the other post. I meant “name” but my 3 year old was trying to type with me.
August 20th, 2008 at 6:34 pm
Congrats to Matt and Luciana on the new baby girl. I know she is a beauty. I like her name as well. Matt seems like such a great dad.
August 20th, 2008 at 6:36 pm
beautiful name. I love the name Gia.
August 20th, 2008 at 7:00 pm
Stephany-
Yes I know that Isabella is an Italian name but it’s so commonly used in English countries that I never realised that they could have chosen it because it was italian, but with Gia, it’s italian for sure. Alexia is Italian too, so I guess it’s all in honor to Luciana’s roots…. Oops, sorry, Luciana is from Argentina, I thought she was from Italy.
August 20th, 2008 at 7:18 pm
Aww, congrats to them! I love the name…it flows so well. Anyways Stéph, Luciana could be of Italian descent. My family is Italian and my grandfather has cousins in Argentina. There are actually many Italians living in Argentina.
August 20th, 2008 at 7:20 pm
i think isabella jane is tom cruise/nicole kidman’s daughters name. unless they both have the same name?
August 20th, 2008 at 7:41 pm
i like Gia too, it’s similiar to my name Gina !!!
August 20th, 2008 at 7:44 pm
Congrats, I’m not a fan of the name…I have a feeling Luciana gets to pick the names for their kids.
August 20th, 2008 at 7:48 pm
im argentinian and most of the people here are gnadsons of italians and spanish people so it must be from her family , anyway i alwasy said that when i had a daughter id name her Gia its the best name ever as gia carangi
August 20th, 2008 at 7:55 pm
I like the name Gia. It’s pretty. And, remember people, Angelina Jolie played the character in a movie called “GIA.” I just thought it was funny since Matt and Brad are friends.
August 20th, 2008 at 7:57 pm
Well, Matt’s now way outnumbered by gender in the house. I shouldn’t make fun, but I bet he will have lots of fun when all four females are PMSing and menstruating at the same time! My friend’s father said it was a nightmare and he always marked his calendars so he would know when to avoid the 4 women in his family, lol.
August 20th, 2008 at 8:01 pm
I’m from Argentina, and yes, we have many italians (or descendants) living here. In my class, I have at least, 20 classmates who have and italian surname.
I love the name Gia!, Alexia, Isabella and Gia. Sounds good
August 20th, 2008 at 8:03 pm
Cool name, love it. Good for them!
August 20th, 2008 at 8:18 pm
Poor Matt! My husband is outnumbered too, but he his boy. It’s still 3-2 though, so i’ll have to tell him to stop complaining!
August 20th, 2008 at 8:21 pm
Love the name-it’s fun, exotic, and feminine without being over-the-top. And it pairs so well with Isabella (my favorite name for a girl). Congrats to them!
August 20th, 2008 at 8:28 pm
I think Mat loves being surrounded by all those women! Just a hunch.
August 20th, 2008 at 8:43 pm
i don’t like name at all, but congrats anyway! i think it’s rather cool to have all girls
August 20th, 2008 at 8:44 pm
That’s MY name! I was totally shocked to see that! Never would have expected a movie star to name his kid my name! What a hoot!
I’ve only ever met 2 other Gia’s, although often someone who meets me tells me that they’ve known SOMEONE named Gia.
August 20th, 2008 at 8:45 pm
Congrats to the family!!!I love her name!!
August 20th, 2008 at 9:38 pm
Matt and Lucy didn’t release Isabella’s birthweight – it was Us magazine in their initial report. And Isabella’s middle name was never identified.
August 20th, 2008 at 10:07 pm
i love her middle name! congrats!!
August 20th, 2008 at 10:19 pm
Steph: Luciana is from Brazil, not Argentina.
August 20th, 2008 at 10:20 pm
Wow! I LOVE their names! That’s what I want to name my daughters- Isabella Violet (Bella), Giana Grace (Gia), and Alexis Madelaine! That’s crazy! I was really looking forward to what they would name her because the older girls have beautiful names.
August 20th, 2008 at 10:20 pm
I wondered too if luciana is italian in some way, because the name luciana is italian and defintley isabella and gia are italian, or maybe they just like italian names. I personally love the name gianna even more than gia, it’s so pretty in my opinion. Isabella and gia sound great together.
August 20th, 2008 at 10:54 pm
Okay I didn’t know there were that much Italians in Argentina. Glad I learned something today! lol
August 20th, 2008 at 11:13 pm
Love the new baby’s name! Congrats to Matt, Luciana and their family!
August 20th, 2008 at 11:24 pm
Congrats to Matt and wife! I guess Matt does feel outnumbered now, lol! Maybe they’ll try for another one in a couple of years and end up with a boy.
Funny, Isabella’s middle name wasn’t ever released and Gia’s weight wasn’t realeased.
August 20th, 2008 at 11:32 pm
Lovely name. They look so happy – quite unusual by hollywood standards. I have latino background and Zavala is one of our distant relatives. I believe there is a Mexican priest by the name of Zavala that is being considered to become a saint – another one of our distant cousins. May they always be happy.
August 20th, 2008 at 11:57 pm
Congradulations to Matt and Lucianna. I’m sure she’s as beautiful as their other girls.
August 21st, 2008 at 1:15 am
I’m Italian and “Gia” is “già”, the Italian for already. Isabella is Italian.
August 21st, 2008 at 2:14 am
Congratulations!!!! can’t wait to see the beautiful baby
sounds like a last name, not middle name…But anyway, she will be called Gia so it’s ok
I like Gia….but not Zavala
Alexia is not italian, Alessia is italian, and Isabella is 100% italian.
I think I will add Gia to my list names if i have another girl in the future
August 21st, 2008 at 2:42 am
Aw, it seems like she’s been pregnant forever, even more so than Gwen Stefani! I’m not too keen on Gia, but I do love Zavala, that’s very pretty!
August 21st, 2008 at 3:28 am
I’m not feeling the name. And I’ve been living in Italy for years and I’ve never heard the name Gia. So I don’t think it’s an Italian name, and if it is then it’s very very rare. Also, I’m not sure Luciana is Italian. Her last name is Barroso which is not an Italian last name, I think it’s Spanish/Portuguese(?).
And you’re right, Isabella is an italian name, but right now it’s a lot more common in the US than in Italy. And Alexia is not italian, the Italian form would be Alessia.
August 21st, 2008 at 5:33 am
how do you pronounce Gia? I know some names with Gia in them – like Gianelle – is said with a Jah sound at the front (janelle) so how is Gia said!?!
Congrats to Matt and Luciana!
August 21st, 2008 at 5:47 am
Aww 3 little girls so cute. They all have beautiful names.
August 21st, 2008 at 6:07 am
I love the name it’s really pretty. Congrats to Matt and Luciana. I like all of their children’s names. My dad is outnumbered as well, 3 daughters
August 21st, 2008 at 6:44 am
Congratulations! I love the name!
Does anyone know if Alexia’s father is part of her life? I’ve never seen anything about him.
August 21st, 2008 at 7:22 am
Yes, Alexia’s father is still very much a part of her life (and all of their lives). They live in Miami (when not away filming) so Alexia can be near her father.
And Luciana is definitely from Argentina, not Brazil or Italy.
August 21st, 2008 at 7:37 am
I love the name! Fits well with her sisters’.
August 21st, 2008 at 8:08 am
I’m italian and I’ve never heard this name.
How do you pronunce it? Maybe it’s an argentinian name.Gia it means already in italian.
Congrats!!
August 21st, 2008 at 8:56 am
Bek – it is pronounced just like it is spelled….gee-a.
I like the name. Very pretty. Congrats to them! I am sure he is just the best dad. I am one of 4 girls, no boys. My dad was way outnumbered, but loved it. He loved having a house full of girls.
August 21st, 2008 at 9:31 am
Gorgeous name! Congrats to the family!
August 21st, 2008 at 9:55 am
Congratulations to the Damons!!!!!
I LOVE the name, all 3 names for their daughtes I love….Alexia, Isabella and Gia…
BTW, can’t they just like the name? I mean if I have another daughter I want to name her Isabella and I have no Italian decent…just a comment!
XOXO
August 21st, 2008 at 11:15 am
Everytime I see a story and photo of this couple I’m struck by how beautiful Luciana is. She is so natural and so beautiful.
August 21st, 2008 at 12:27 pm
Cool name. Yeah I’d always thought Luciana was Italian too, given her & her daughters names.
I guess different names can be associated with several different countries, because not only Luciana, but also, I had a coworker named Karina who was Brazilian, and Karina Smirnoff from DWTS who’s Russian (but dated Mario Lopez, who’s latino), etc.
August 21st, 2008 at 1:18 pm
Hi, i’m from argentina. Luciana Too
Congratulations to the family!!!
August 21st, 2008 at 2:02 pm
Gia is not an argentinian name. Isabel (the spanish form of Isabella) is really common here, the same with Alejandra (a similar name of Alexia).
Luciana is from Salta, a province in the north of the country.
Once again, congratulations to the family!
(BTW, my grandma’s maiden name is Zavalla!)
August 21st, 2008 at 2:26 pm
I like the name Gia (Gianni, Giovanni i like those two). It’s pretty and the other names flow. I like Matt and Luciana seems nice. Congrats to the family.
August 21st, 2008 at 3:20 pm
Gia IS Italian (it’s my name, I posted earlier). I am 100% Italian, my parents were born in Genoa. It’s rare, you are all right about that, but it’s Italian. It’s been used a few times in my family tree.
I KNOW gia’ means already, but as a name it’s unaccented, and pronounced gee-ah, not jah.
August 21st, 2008 at 8:04 pm
Love, love that name. Just like the famous model Gia Carangi that Angelina Jolie played on the HBO movie.
August 22nd, 2008 at 1:17 am
Gia is a beautiful name and I really like Zavala. Gorgeous name altogether.
August 22nd, 2008 at 3:23 am
SORRY,Gia but I’ve really never heard this name!I’m also Italian from a little city near Venice.Maybe It’s a typical name from Genoa,I don’t know.Zavala is not italian I’m sure
August 22nd, 2008 at 11:16 am
Congrats to them!
I also love the name. It’s a girls name I’ve liked for a while, but it’s become so popular I doubt i’ll use it myself someday..Espeically since my name is “Mia” so…lol.
I think the name is great, and fits well with his wife/daughters names.
Gia is an Italian name..its a short version of the name Gianna-and a variation of the name “Jane”
August 22nd, 2008 at 11:48 am
I love the name! It’s gorgeous. I just have a question.. is Zavala pronounced like ZAH-vah-lah? or Zuh-VAH-la? sorry. I think its a great name I just don’t know the exact pronounciation
August 22nd, 2008 at 3:12 pm
Gia is not always Italian. It’s my name too but it came from Greek for me (derived from the name Georgia after a relative)… Many names come from multiple cultures.
September 7th, 2008 at 11:51 am
Congrats on the new baby! She was born on my birthday ;0) Now you have no choice then to think of me at least once a year!!
