Is she seriously 5 weeks already? Geez…time flies…
August 22nd, 2008 at 3:11 pm
How cute is Clementine? And Ryan is looking great too!
August 22nd, 2008 at 3:39 pm
What an adorable, sweet, little thing. I agree, both Ryan and Clementine look gorgeous.
August 22nd, 2008 at 3:44 pm
Time flies indeed and both of them look gorgeous BUT as a mother of 3 and maybe its a European thing…our babies wear hats,caps etc and i absolutly cant see when babies dont wear any…..sorry thats just my 2 cents in it and i never had to deal with any ear infections thank goodness

It’s quite refreshing that they take her out like that without keeping her too wrapped up and hidden. She has every right to enjoy life and the sights and sounds around her.

Clementine is adorable and I agree Ryan is gorgeous! I’m curious though, I always wonder about this when I read posts about them but never have commented.. anyway what is Ryan and Ethan’s story? All I’ve heard is that she was he and Umas former nanny. I’m not asking to stir up negativity or anything, whatever the story it doesn’t make Clementine any less of a blessing. I’m just wondering b/c it’s generally always mentioned she was the former nanny and then on Extra or some show the other night they asked Uma how she felt about Ethan and Ryan having a baby together. Did he leave Uma for Ryan or something to that effect?
August 22nd, 2008 at 4:17 pm
Also.. kinda random but I always think when I see her posts too how lucky for her as a first time Mom that she was once a nanny lol. She has such a knowledge already that we have to learn once our little one arrives. She must feel so comfortable as a first time Mom
August 22nd, 2008 at 4:29 pm
Simone, I agree with you! But I am European, too, so maybe we are the aliens here… I do not consider a reasonably sun protected baby as unable to enjoy life, sights and sounds (the question is whether the little one really enjoys the sounds of New York – but actually she had to, just days after her birth, while going shopping diapers with her mom).
I think Marcia Cross has the correct attitude in terms of skin protection and that is why she is often praised by many cbb-readers/posters!

Heather, he cheated on Uma with a woman named Jennifer in Canada, if memory serves. Ryan came into the picture in a non-professional way after everything was over.
I agree that it’s nice that Ryan has the experience of working with infants already, she probably has already made her mistakes and knows how she wants to do things with her little girl.
I also can’t believe she’s already five weeks old! This summer has just flown.

Caps (and socks) have NOTHING to do with ear infections….it’s an old wives tale. Your ear has an ear drum and most ear infections children get are BEHIND that ear drum. A cap wont make a difference, it has to do with the mechanics of the ear behind the ear drum.
Acute otitis media is an ear infection behind the ear drum, swimmers ear is an infection in the ear canal in the front of the ear canal and that also has nothing to do with ear infections.
Usually a kid gets a cold or a sinus infection or an upper respiratory infection which then causes fluid to back up in the ear canal where if it sits long enough it can become infected.
In a small child the Eustachian tube is short and tilted more horizontal than in an adult which also leads to more ear infections.
Now a hat is great for protecting a child against the sun but it has nothing to do with the ears.
I’m 26 and consider myself pretty well versed in ear infections, I get them about once a month and have since I was born, along with surgeries along the way and now my poor son seems to have the same bad luck with ears that I have.

I kind of don’t agree. I am European too but I have never seen more sun protection craziness then after moving here. In Europe, people relax little more. I don’t mean like letting kids fry in the sun for hours, but 5-10 minutes walk cannot kill anyone. We don’t know how long she’s been on a walk, and on top of that, Ryan looks like she is about to put her into the sling or just took her out to put her in the car. For such a short moment the baby surely doesn’t need a hat (I can’t imagine having a baby in the sling, and then put a hat on her for the moment while I’m putting her in the car) Plus I believe Ryan has been a nanny for quite some time, I’m sure she knows what she’s doing !!!

i just wanted to add that clementines little outfit is from old navy. i recently purchased it for my sister and thought it was adorable.

While many of you are curious about Clem’s lack of hat or socks, what really perplexes me is the lack of anything to carry or put her in… For example, a sling/wrap or a stroller. I have an eight week old and to carry her to the car can seem unwieldy. A sling or stroller just seems a safer method of transportation. Maybe it’s just me…
August 22nd, 2008 at 7:24 pm
in regards to marcia cross, you have to remember that she is very fair skinned and probably has had a bad sunburn or 2 in her lifetime and is trying to lower her daughters’ skin cancer risk.
August 22nd, 2008 at 7:43 pm
Thanks, Heather. I was about to question how wearing a HAT prevents ear infections?! That seemed very odd to me.
Clementine is just GORGEOUS! And so is Ryan. I love seeing them out and about. Too cute.
August 22nd, 2008 at 8:20 pm
Heather I thought I was the only one. I get ear infections constantly. They hurt so bad. I can’t wear headphones, ear plugs, or swim.
The baby is so cute. I think it’s odd that Ryan is wearing long sleeves over a shirt and jeans (it looks like…they could be shorts) yet the baby has on just a onsie looking thing. You see lots of pictures like that of other babies and their parents too.

Jenny, the brown thing on her chest is a pouch sling…
August 22nd, 2008 at 9:04 pm
I was told to dress my child for the weather. I’m sure she’s quite comfortable and it’s not like she has her laying out in the sun.
The nurse at the hospital actually took away my son’s cap once he was 36 hours old and maintaining his body temperature well. Babies can overheat extremely fast if you leave caps on them all the time.
August 22nd, 2008 at 9:06 pm
Baby looks like daddy for sure!
August 22nd, 2008 at 10:00 pm
i was also told to dress my child just like i dress myself and according to the weather. my doctor said many babies are waaay overdressed with blankets, wraps, sweaters, etc. makes sense. of course most of them like to be swaddled and wrapped up in the first few weeks but after that i just dressed my daughter according to the weather, not to mention she screamed bloody murder when i put a hat on her head:)
ryan looks really gorgeous!
August 22nd, 2008 at 10:15 pm
I love the baby’s name, and she’s so cute, especially her little bare feet.
August 22nd, 2008 at 11:09 pm
Is it possible that July 18, is a typo? I’m with the others who are amazed she is already 5 weeks old! I’m also of the generation where, if mom is wearing sweater and long pants, baby should be, too. This thing about babies not being fragile has gotten out of hand. They aren’t made of stainless steel either. I am a retired nanny, after 47 years, and that baby looks tense and anxious to me!!!!
August 22nd, 2008 at 11:11 pm
P.S….Not all nannies are expert in every developmental age of children. Some specialize in the very young, and some prefer to care for the school aged child. Do we know how long she was nanny to Ethan’s kids, and the ages they were?
August 22nd, 2008 at 11:21 pm
Did he actually come out and say he cheated? If not, please stop saying he did, because your comment is only based on opinion and not on fact.
August 23rd, 2008 at 1:10 am
i also wanted to add, during the summer months, if you wear a baby in sling like that, they can get pretty hot quickly as they are they are tucked into that fabric without a ton of air circulation around the body and pushed up against your body.
that’s why when i used a sling in warm weather, i always just dressed my daughters in onsies.

The thing we have to remember is that often times, these photos don’t show the whole story. Ryan could have an entire entourage out with her, and we’d never know because the photo is focused on the two of them. She could have a stroller with her that’s out of frame — the caption does state that she was out with Ethan and Levon, so maybe they were holding a stroller (just speculation, of course) or whatever extra accouterments necessary for a 5 week old baby? Maybe she’d just lifted Clementine out of the sling to let her get a little fresh air and sunshine? And I mean, that’s probably the likely explanation (that this shot doesn’t show the whole story), because think about it: how often do you go out with a baby without carrying some kind of bag with you to house all the essentials for taking a baby out of the house? (Diapers, wipes, blankets, bottles/pacifiers, spare set of clothes, etc. infinity.) I just don’t think it’s really fair to negatively speculate on the baby’s lack of…whatever you feel is necessary, thereby indirectly criticizing Ryan and her parenting skills, when the shot clearly doesn’t tell the whole story.
That’s just the generic, dime-a-dozen .02 from an internet observer.

Jenny, if you look once more you will clearly see Ryan does have a brown sling over her shoulder. So saying she doens’t have sling while she has and the picture shows it, I dont really know what you mean. Also, they were out with other people, most likely someone else had a stroller as well
August 23rd, 2008 at 3:17 am
We have hats with a UV sunscreen over here so I dont think hats are useless,there is wind,sun,noise and so forth and ear infections can happen due to not wearing a hat among other reasons of course but babies should wear something on their heads fairskinned or not.
Summer or winter a hat is a must to all of my kids
Earinfections are very rare over here among other things and I lived in the US due to being married to a soldier and I have seen things that in Germany noone has even heard of.
Anyways I wish you all a wonderful weekend from rainy Germany.

yes, he admited he cheated with the waitress while he was up in canada filming.
August 23rd, 2008 at 9:21 am
So cute, time flies. Great picture, but obviously does not show everything. She probably has two to three people with her, so no reason to criticize her choices.
1. She does have a sling on her.
2. Not wearing a hat does NOT cause an ear infection. Old wives tale.
3. She is carrying a black bag/tote on her right arm that probably has diapers/essentials in it.

This poor woman can’t win for losing. I’ve never seen such judgemental comments for when she *gasp* brought her baby out to get diapers! So if the baby “looks tense and anxious” then she’s a bad mother and doesn’t know how to take care of her baby? And somehow you KNOW that the baby “looks tense and anxious” because she’s cold (even though you’re looking at a picture from an instant in time)? If Clementine does look that way to you, what if it’s because it’s feeding time? What if she has a dirty diaper? What if she just farted? Clementine may have been sleeping in her sling all afternoon, snug as a bug in a rug, then woke up, Ryan took her out of the sling, someone snapped her picture, then maybe NOW she’s going to do a list of things that WE don’t know she’s going to do….change the baby, feed the baby, put her in the carseat or stroller for a nap, put a blanket on her, put some pants, socks, and a hat back on her that may be in her diaper bag…….I can’t stand it when people are so judgemental when they don’t have the first clue as to what she’s BEEN doing, what she’s doing NOW, what she’s GOING to do, and WHY she’s doing it. Drives me nuts. Just enjoy the picture for what it is. Clementine and Ryan look fine to me…They’ve survived for 5 weeks!

COMMON MYTHS
* Going without a hat in cold weather causes ear infections – No, ear infections are not caused by going without your ears covered, or by cold/rainy weather. The middle ear most often becomes infected from bacteria that travel up the eustachian tube from the throat. However, exposure to cold/wind may make your ear pain worse when you have an ear infection.

Myths
* Going without a hat in cold weather causes ear infections. Ear infections are not caused by cold weather, or by not wearing at hat in cold weather.

~~~~~~~~~~~~
There is no basis to the commonly held belief that wearing a hat will prevent ear
infections.
Now I repeat not wearing a hat does NOT cause ear infections BUT it is good for sun exposure.
How can a virus or a bacteria enter behind a closed ear drum to infect your child’s ear simply because you don’t wear a hat? Couldn’t it theoretically get in from under the hat?
awwww….. so cute!!! Also, I love the print or embroidery on Ryan’s top.
Reading these just makes me laugh…No one really knows the situation behind Ryan and Ethan. They don’t speak to the media about their relationship as some stars do. We don’t know everything that Uma did during the relationship. Not to say she DID do anything…”WE” just don’t know. Ryan and Uma may actually get along, who knows? So,everything is complete speculation. No one really knows the context of these pictures…In NYC, the sling is a GOOD idea.I do see parents/nannies walking around on the sidewalk with their kids in strollers. NYC pedestrian central.I HAVE seen children accidentally bumped into in strollers. You have people darting in and out of foot traffic all the time not paying attention. Maybe she lives around a corner from D’Agostino’s. Maybe she’s grabbing something quick. I must say there’s bodega closer to my front door than where grab my mail in my building. “We” don’t really know.
