Jane Krakowski: Motherhood is Something I Forgot to Do

With a career that has led her to star in musicals from Broadway to London and hit TV shows including Ally McBeal and 30 Rock, Jane Krakowski recently came to the realization that at 39 years old, she may have missed the opportunity to have a family. "I woke up one day, maybe it was a few weeks ago, and thought, ‘Oh, s–t, I meant to do that,’" says the actress who has a steady relationship with British documentarian Marc Singer. While Jane jokes that she feels like "one of those ’80s T-shirts that said something like ‘Oops, I forgot the baby on the bus,’" in that being a mother is something she "forgot to do and should get on before it’s too late," she does admit that when — and if — she has a child in the future, it will not be due to a feeling of obligation.

"It was never a priority and I don’t regret that. This may be old-fashioned, but I want a child to be the product of love. But you know, as I get older, I realize that may not be the case."

30 Rock returns October 30th at 9:30 p.m. on NBC.

“It was never a priority and I don’t regret that. This may be old-fashioned, but I want a child to be the product of love. But you know, as I get older, I realize that may not be the case.”

I bet her boyfriend feels really good about that comment! It implies she’s either thinking about a child that isn’t his, or that if she had his child, it wouldn’t be the product of love. I’m wondering if she ran her mouth off and forgot what she was saying? Regardless, I do love this woman, she was the best thing in Ally McBeal!

  2. Memyselfandi Says:

I actually really respect this! She didn’t want to bring a child into the world unless she was in a committed, loving relationship where the child was the priority!

  3. zaraB Says:

That is a bizarre comment if she’s still with her partner!

  4. Alice Says:

I think it meant she doesn’t want to go through fertility treatments. Either the child comes naturally, “just” the product of love, or else she won’t have any. That’s how I see it.

  5. Stéph Says:

I agree with Phoebe, I thought the same thing when I read that. Either she thinks the child wouldn’t be his or that she doesn’t love him. It’s a strange comment.

I loved her in Ally McBeal and in Mom at 16.
    Jane is great!

  6. Nancy Says:

I agree that it does kind of sound that way. It is possible, though, that she meant as she gets older she may need the help of technology to produce a child rather than just by love alone. With decreasing fertility, older moms sometimes have problems getting pregnant the ‘old-fashioned’ way.

  7. lis Says:

I interpreted her comment to mean she usually felt that the outcome of love was a child, and that it may not be the case for her eventually. (Which, through my interpretation of what she said, was to say that her relationship is no less valid because they do not have a child.)

  8. Sarita Says:

I think you all misunderstood what she meant with “product of love”. She probably meant conceived by making love and it just happening instead of having treatments or a surrogate etc.

  9. Liv Says:

    I agree with you alice.

  10. Mia Says:

yeah. I definitely interpreted it one way after I read it the first time vs. reading it over the second time.

The first time I read it I thought she meant like “she wasn’t in love with her boyfriend/partner enough to have a baby with him”…but after re-reading it, It seems she meant more that she wants to conceive a natural way and that may not be possible after the next 2-3 years.

  11. Mathilde Says:

I agree with Alice as well.
And by the way, I really respect her for having that opinion.

  12. KR Says:

I love her in 30 Rock. I think the comment meant she wants the baby to come from two people in a loving relationship but now that she is older they might have to consider adopting instead. I dont think she meant she doesnt love him anymore.

  13. Sasha, USA Says:

I think she means that she has chosen not to have children thus far in life and she’s realizing that she may have to use fertility treatments to conceive at this point, that’s all…
