"I was too emotional [when I was pregnant]. I cried at the drop of a hat. It’s Hallmark commercials, it’s anything you could possibly imagine. Not even Hallmark. It’s a coffee commercial, and they pick up [the cup of coffee] and I’d go [crying] ‘Ooooh, it’s coffee!’"

Matt Damon Sees His Girls in Every Child He Meets

Richard Young/Startraks

While suffering children around the world pulls at everyone’s heart strings, Matt Damon believes that by having a family, the desire to protect these innocent kids grows even stronger. At the OneXOne benefit event in Toronto, Matt shared that being a father to his three girls has made the 37-year-old actor "angry" when he bears witness to "the way a lot of children live in the world" — an issue he became passionate about after having children himself. "I think certainly once you have kids, it’s hard not to see your child in every other child you meet," said Matt.

Matt, who became a father again when he welcomed daughter Gia Zavala on August 20th, is enjoying his time with his kids, saying — while "it sounds kinda corny" — there is so much to love about fatherhood. Calling the arrival of Gia "the most indescribable way that a new child opens up your heart," Matt shares that his newest daughter is a happy, smiling baby — when she needs a diaper change! He jokingly explains,

"She smiles now…mostly when she goes to the bathroom. That’s natural."

In addition to Gia, Matt and his wife Luciana are also parents to Isabella, 2, and Alexia, 10, Luciana’s child from her previous marriage.

This is so true! Before I had kids I would see news stories about children (and mothers) who were being abused or neglected, lived in poverty or had a hard time with life. I would see them and think “what a shame…” Now I see those children and it does not matter the age, the race or the circumstance, I see my kids in all of them! It is hard to look away when you make the connection that their story could very well be yours.

that is exactly how I feel also since being a parent. everytime I’m walking down the street and I see a child wandering alone or see children in need; I feel this sense of responsibility to make sure that the child is okay. your more aware of children around you also.

This is such a beautiful sentiment. Parenthood, whether it is through adoption, fostering or birth, can open the door to such incredible empathy and hope for a justice, it truly makes the world a better place.
