Helen Hunt Loved Being a Stay-At-Home Mom

Helen Hunt’s debut as a screenwriter in Then She Found Me — a film in which she also starred and directed — was helped along, ironically enough, by a lack of high quality roles in the wake of her Academy Award-winning performance in As Good As It Gets. The 45-year-old actress admits, however, that a part would have to have been truly amazing to take away from her happy home life with partner Matthew Carnahan and daughter Makena’lei, 4. "There weren’t a ton of parts that were worth leaving my house to do," she says. "I loved being at home with my daughter, and taking two or three hours a day to write was good to do while being a stay-at-home mom."

As for Makena’lei’s unusual name, Helen shares that it means "many flowers of heaven" in Hawaiian, adding "it’s very meaningful for me."

I’ve always wondered how she pronounces Makena’lei. Is it Mah-ken-ah-lee? Or Mah-ken-ah-lay? Or something totally different?

  3. molly Says:

It must be the second one, makenah lay
in Hawaiian they pronounce things like they write them
