"He’s half-Cuban, so one side of the family speaks Spanish all the time, and my side of the family does not, so he’ll be like, ‘One, dos, three…’ He goes back and forth! Right now he’s in the mimic stage, which is just great. I don’t want him to speak properly, because I enjoy the Spanglish!"

My family has happened to become quite international since three of my cousins have married a Filipine, a Russian and a Mexican woman, respectively. We are from Spain, Barcelona area in concret, which means we are already bilingual: spanish and catalan. So, their children speaks a mixture of catalan, spanish, english and russian. Right now they’re old enough to speak in one or another language, but when they were younger they would mix up everything, just as Jamie Pressly’s son. Apart from being funny for us, these special family conditions are great for the children since they’ve learned three languages naturally.

I have the perfect solution for Spanglish families! I am originally from the Dominican Republic and was raised in a bilingual household with lots of Spanglish. I want to raise my children bilingually as well so I started a company that produces bilingual CDs for preschool age children. We use a combination of Spanish and English storytelling and songs! It’s perfect for any family trying to introduce Spanish into their homes! Check us out at http://www.professorpocket.com.

  5. Mia Says:

Yeah. I can relate as well.

My family is Russian and I just recently picked up the language when I went to visit Russia for the first time. English is my first language, but my best friend is Puerto Rican and I’ve grown up with Spanish as a second language my whole life.

So when I have kids someday, it’s going to be a mix of English, Spanish, and Russian-all at once.

Well, and granted whatever additional attributes my future husband may have lol.

how can someone be half a country? i wish some people would learn the difference between nationality/religion/ethnicity etc etc. before they have children who have parentage from more than one ethnic/racial group.
