I do give my boys cold medicine, but only as a last resort. I try other methods like steaming to loosen mucus first.

Brandi,
Same here. I try what I can until I call the doctor in desperation. My doctor does not believe in cold medicine for children. But he also knows that there is a point when antibiotics and a mild dose do the trick. We try steaming first.
Now, I do have to give my youngest Benadryl quite often. She reacts very strongly to bug bites and other “naturey” things. Just yesterday she played outside for 20 minutes and came in with huge welts all over her from bug bites. I put a little cortaid to help with the itching and Benadryl for the swelling.
