Singer M.I.A. Confirms Pregnancy
Johns PkI/Splash News Online |
After appearing at a Brooklyn concert over the weekend with a suspicious-looking belly, UK artist M.I.A., née Mathangi ‘Maya’ Arulpragasam, confirmed to Pitchfork Media on Saturday that she expects her first child February 8th, saying "I’m creating a baby." The 31-year-old Brit, engaged to Ben Brewer, lead singer and guitarist of The Exit, did not announce the sex of the baby.
Though she’s been on the scene musically for a while, M.I.A. skyrocketed to fame this summer when her single "Paper Planes" was used to promote the movie Pineapple Express."When I found out I was pregnant and "Paper Planes" was in the iTunes top 10, it seemed like the whole world was reshuffled in one week, and all my plans went out the window," she says. "I’ve got two kids, that’s what it feels like. And that’s the lesson — you can’t make plans."
While she does plan to return to the studio to record another album soon, M.I.A. first hopes to hit the road on a baby tour. "I have to do the rounds — go see my family and show them the belly."

I’ve been a fan of her for years and I simply adore her! I hope she comes back out on the road every once in a while after the new baby comes! CONGRATS!

Whatever happened to life not always going as planned? Whatever happened to setting an example for your own child and hoping you raised them well enough to do what you taught them instead of being influenced by outsiders? Whatever happened to living your life as you please and letting others do the same?
On a side note if everyone was perfect then the world would be boring, the unexpected is what I live for

Whatever happened to simple congratulations?
October 13th, 2008 at 1:33 pm
jagatmoss, I don’t know what her situation has to do with the kids of the world. She’s an adult! Those kids that look up to her have a parent or guardian, and that would be THEIR responsibility. If she wants to work backwards, let her. That’s the beauty of the world.

October 13th, 2008 at 2:55 pm
jagatmoss… what ever happened to minding your own BUSINESS…
u control YOUR household, and she can control hers… until she’s knocking on your door asking for a hand out… ur opinion is kind of… well… irrelevant…
October 13th, 2008 at 2:56 pm
she’s an adult and can make her own choices. it’s not her job to parent anyone’s kid but her own. so live and let live.
p.s. congrats to m.i.a.!!

Wow, tough crowd today! girliness, M.I.A. was born in Sri Lanka. She’s awesome.Jagatmoss, you’re on a celebrity baby blog. celebrities rarely mirror us common folk. that is why we are fascinated by them. that said, why not have a baby any old way she wants to?
October 13th, 2008 at 3:57 pm
m.i.a. was born in london and moved to sri lanka as an infant. her family eventually relocated back to london.
and m.i.a. is an acronym for missing in action that she uses as her dad was a political activist

Hey! Girl, I just wanted to congratulate you on you album, its sick. Having a baby is amazing, I myself was pregnant at 26 I am now a proud mother of a 2 1/2 year old beautiful little girl. She is so amazing and so smart. When I got pregnant I thought my life was over, but now when I look back at that day, I thank God that my daughter is a part of my life. Life would not be the same without her. She is the best thing that has happened to me. This is just the beginning of your success. Girl Power!!!Rock On!!!!!!

Wow, its funny how some people’s attitude’s are. MIA is a WOMAN, not a girl.Yes she looks young, but she is in her thirties.Oh wait, I thought maybe its okay for people like Angelina Jolie to have lots of kids and not be married, why not credit her with being a bad example for children also ?
I just don’t understand. A simple “congratulations” would do, or just nothing at all.
I think MIA and her music is awesome and I am so happy for her and Ben. LOL, hopefully the baby comes out with Ben’s wild curls, that would be soo cute

Love, love, love M.I.A. Her music is eclectic and her singing reminds me of home!!
These days to each their own, even if people don’t agree with you!

@jagatmoss
THAT IS WHAT HOLLYWOOD DOES, BABY then WED.
*Nicole Richie
*Brad and Angelina

The list goes on….

Jagatmoss….
As if she’s the first celeb to get knocked up without being married. Naomi Watts and her “fiance” are on baby #2 and aren’t married. Go complain in their post about babies being born out of wedlock.
October 13th, 2008 at 11:27 pm
Aya- Exactly! Having lots of kids without being/getting married is the one thing Angie and Brad rarely, if ever, get criticized for!
Yet when any other celeb has kids out of wedlock, they get raked over the coals for it (Charolotte Church, Nicole Richie, and even Jamie Lynn Spears are just a few examples)!
Why is that people criticize all these other celebs for having kids out of wedlock, but not Angie and Brad? I’m honestly curious as to the reason!
October 14th, 2008 at 6:45 am
She sure did hide that for a long time, I didn`t even know! Maybe because she`s not in the eye so much?
Congrats to her I love her music (and art).
I agree with Celebbabylover, Angie and Brad are almost looked on as gods. People act as if celebs are the only ones, like non celebs don`t have children out of marriage. And who really cares? She`s having a baby and gonna take care of it, that`s all that matters.

My fiance and I are expecting our first baby. We found out we were pregnant (we’ve been together for 3 years), and a few months later he proposed. It’s not like we never intended to get married. Life just had different plans for us. We’ll get married whenever. I’m not too worried about it.
It bothers me that people think you must be some kind of heathen if you have a child out of wedlock. I wasn’t aware this was 1954. Just because we’re not married already doesn’t mean we won’t love our child just as much as any married couple.
On a note towards this post though, I love MIA. I have both the Arular and Kala albums. I was disappointed when she said she was going to “retire” but I guess now we know why she said that! I don’t think she’ll be gone forever
So congrats MIA!

It REALLY bothers me that this girl is being treated as a celebrity when her father is a terrorist and she supports him. Her father is a well known leader and supporter of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (a ruthless terrorist group that has murdered so many people, conscripted child soldiers and ruined an entire country. This terrorist group perfected and popularized the use of suicide bombs and recently used the first pregnant female suicide bomber). And as a Sri Lankan who lives IN Sri Lanka and has lost friends to many bombs and other violence perpetrated by the LTTE, it bothers me that so many people consider this woman a celebrity! This would be as bad as calling the Al-Qaeda fighters “celebrities!!!!!!”
There are many articles including the one below that’ll hopefully help some people realize who exactly she is:

My internet is slow so I apologize if this gets sent multiple times. I’d rather send it multiple times than not at all!
